No option to ENLARGE images

Oct 31, 2009 5:30 AM
Hello all, anyone else seeing this the last couple of days? In search pages you have the enlarge image pop up but if I click on many listings, on the listing page itself the option to ENLARGE the image is gone, so you only have the tiny carppy photo in the listing.

I emailed CS about thsi yesterday so i expect a reply in about 1 week telling us they are working on it..... That usually means 2-6 months to actually fix it once they start admitting that its a site issue...

Here is an example of one of my items that is not working for me: 290354979513

Hi pepinski9,

My understanding of how eBay processes photos indicates the enlarge option isn't available because the seller didn't upload a picture large enough to support the feature. Allow me to explain...

eBay suggests sellers upload photos at least 1000 pixels on the longest side. From that original eBay produces the various sizes shown at various places ranging from 800 pixels for maximum enlarge down to the tiny gallery versions.

In the upper left corner of item listings eBay displays a version up to 300 pixels in size. In the case of 290354979513 the seller only uploaded a 200 pixel photo so eBay could not produce anything larger than 300 pixels from it. Because clicking an Enlarge link for that picture wouldn't actually lead to a larger version eBay suppressed the link.

I don't know why eBay CS couldn't just tell you that immediately, but that's the reason. As a shopper the only thing to do is ask the seller to provide a larger version for you to see before making a decision to purchase.

Hope this helps,

Rob

However, my image WAS and IS huge and the ENLARGE option was on this listing for months since they introduced the new listing page, only in the last few days has the ENLARGE option gone and now I am stuck with just a small picture that is hard to see details. All of our items that are affected have huge images that were nice an detailed when you clicked ENLARGE but now that option is gone completely from about half of my listings as well as listings from other sellers it would appear....

I believe eBay is having problems with scanned images and is not telling the user community.

Except for the odd upload glitch that did not go through, a retry would worked. It happens.

Some listings I revised back in early August had new images uploaded. No problems. My store items were all ended by the end of August.

When I started relisting my store in mid-September, any new images I uploaded came back with with a message that the image was not at optimal size.

I made no change to how I uploaded images.

As I still had some scanned images from the summer, I re-listed an item, using the same image that I had used in August. It produced the same error message, where I did not have it back in August.

The items still can be enlarged, and the zoom feature still works, but that error message still shows up after I uploaded the image.

As I am all but stopping from creating new listings, I decided not to call eBay, I'll live with the error message for the few new items I will create. Who knows what will happen if they get their hands on it.

Rick

I am having the same problem. I paid for the enlarged photos (gallery plus) on 4 items. It is not showing up on them. I went to edit the auctions and the gallery plus with a fee of 35 cents is checked.

I wrote to ebay and they told me to clear my cache... sigh...

Should have added that mine doesn't even show up in the search results to click for larger image.

This is in response to Rick's (rdcomics) post regarding the "not optimal" message. That is more in the nature of an advisory than an error message. That message will appear when an image is uploaded at less than 1000 pixels on the longest side or has had more jpeg compression applied than would occur at level 90 on a quality scale of 1-100.

eBay's intent is to help sellers improve the display quality of their uploaded photos particularly for obtaining best results with eBay's Enlarge (up to 800 pixels) and zoom feature (which also currently uses an 800 pixel version).

The advisories are a new effort by eBay since August. Their presence, as Rick describes, does not prevent any particular feature from working.

Hope this helps,

Rob

pepinski9 -

I'm sorry for not having noticed you were referencing one of your own items in your original post. Based on your having further stated there was once a larger version present I did some checking...

The version showing in your item page is 200x145 pixels and has this URL:

http://i22.ebayimg.com/06/i/000/a4/7b/0f98_2.JPG

Another larger version at 400 x 290 pixels is also being stored by eBay here:

http://i22.ebayimg.com/06/i/000/a4/7b/0f98_1.JPG

That proves your original was at least 400 pixels when you uploaded it and, at the very least, that version should show with the presence of an enlarge link.

Bottom line, there is definitely a problem with 290354979513 and probably the same with your others that are now also displaying improperly. I notice Auctiva content present in your item listing. Along with eBay there would seem to be a possibility of an Auctiva screw up. If you list and re-list through Auctiva then I suggest contacting them as well for help.

Thanks for the note, I do not use Auctiva I list all with Turbo lister I only have Auctiva add the scrolling gallery. Many listings are ok but many of my listings are not, almost half o fmy items have no option to enlarge even though the images that I uploaded are much bigger. This is a problem as people cannot clearly see what they are buying with these small images!

I also so far have only gotten a CLEAR YOUR CACHE canned response, tomorrow I will call PS support....sigh......

I've only seen this problem with photos uploaded to eBay.

Not saying it's exclusive to photos uploaded to eBay, but suggesting that it might be.

Self-Hosted Gallery Plus images seem to display just fine.

Re: No option to ENLARGE images

I have noticed that any items that we made previous to about 6 months ago have no enlarge option but all our newer listings are fine. Definitely an ebay issue.

I called CS and first they told me my images were not big enough that is why, typical uneducated answer so I schooled them and she got her supervisor who is "working on it already" and should be calling me back soon.

It would help if anyone else is seeing these issues to call or contact live help, the more complaints the more likely they will do something and more quickly. This is not a browser issue and as noted above ebay is hosting the larger images still, just cannot enlarge them on the listing pages......

They sure tried their best to blame me and say it is not their fault and I am sure when the first callback comes it will be something like please re-upload the images, ect but that doesn't work on 30,000+ listings.....

So I called CS back after waiting 2 days for their call and a ray of hope. They ADMIT it is a site issue at THEIR end, they are "working on it" (which in eBay speak probably, sadly, means 6-10 weeks....).

Please anyone who cares still call and write to get them moving on this, it is hard to sell things when people cannot really see what it is......
