THE SOLUTION "TO SERVER NOT FOUND" FOR COMCAST USERS!

Jan 26, 2007 1:36 PM
HERE IS THE SOLUTION TO EVERYONE'S PROBLEMS!

I know I've been losing money not having eBay work properly, STOP LOSING YOURS!

All you have to do is to change the DNS settings to point to DNS outside of Comcast.

www.opendns.com can be used;
208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 are two
servers

Here's how:
1) Open Control Panel (Start -> Control Panel)
2) Select Network Connections
3) Select your active connection (I.e. Local Connection #1, Wireless Connection #1) whatever is your primary internet connection.
4) Right click, select properties.
5) Scroll through the list to select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
6. Under the General Tab, select use the following DNS server addresses.
7. Enter the preferred and alternate DNS addresses as listed above.
Preferred: 208.67.222.222 Alternate: 208.67.220.220
8. You're done. Your internet will disconnect and reconnect with the new DNS and viola! The problem is solved.

You can also use any other DNS servers you may know of, have access to, or know works for you BESIDES the Comcast DNS servers.

eBay is hard at work (I hope..) notifying Comcast of this problem, and for some of you it may be fixed before you can implement this change.

My computer is Windows XP 2003, settings or instructions may be different for other users. If you have questions or need help, I'd be more than happy to help you through it. You can e-mail me at ebay@atyourbidding.com, you can also feel free to bid on anything I have listed as thanks. :P

I just wanted to say thanks to at_your_bidding_inc! Changing the DNS settings to his suggestions worked for me in terms of the periodic "server not found" issues. :)

took less than a minute.worked fine for me.And if it is a comcast issue good luck waited from october 20th till jan 9th to get dvr box replaced when i told them it was bad instead they rewire my house and other lame excuses then finally tell me they just don't have enough boxes in stock cause they constantly break.this is my 6th box in 2yrs.They just don't care cause where I live thats only cable company so they figure what r u gonna do go with a slower connection or deal with the problems.Guess I gotta deal cause slower won't cut it anymore.

THE SOLUTION "TO SERVER NOT FOUND" FOR COMCAST USERS!

Bidding, thank you so much for your post. I am saving the info just in case.

To those complaining about the buyers being lost, yes, for the last week, buyers have been lost, and that's unfortunate. However, I have not made changes to my DNS and this morning I was able to reach eBay and Half.com. I did have problems getting to the boards, but found a roundabout way in.

So I'm hopeful the problem, whomever's fault it is, has been fixed. Whew, it's been a rough 7 days!

Fingers are crossed!

Bidding, thank you!

I decided that the problems weren't completely fixed if I was having trouble getting to the boards, so I did your fix (which btw, took less than a minute). I was glad DH (the resident computer geek) was here to watch over my shoulder, but it was pretty much as said in your instructions.

Checked to make sure the new dns really took, it did, and now I'm not having any server not founds at all. And like someone else said, it seems to be running a bit faster-- but you know, after a week of server not found, ANYTHING (well, maybe not dialup) would seem faster! LOL

Thanks again, Bidding!

I just called Comcast again and they led me through a process that was similar to what at_your_bidding_inc has suggested. It was a longer workaround but things seem to be better now. I also asked for some kind of credit to my bill this month if this is indeed a Comcast issue.

P.S. Not a fortune, but they gave me a credit of $25 on my bill.

Not_dot,
I've been trying to get on this board all day and finally made it. The first thing I did was print the work-around that bidding gave us. Who at Comcast did you talk with? Was the solution the same, that is, to change the DNS settings to somewhere other than Comcast?

zebl, I just called the main Comcast # & pushed 1, pushed 2 etc. for high speed internet "other problems". I was eventually transferred to a Gina in a Fort Lauderdale "technical" dept. of some sort. I mentioned the theory & the fix that at_your_bidding_inc so generously offered here & specifically mentioned DNS settings. Now, mind you, I can barely spell DNS, so it's obvious when I talk to anyone over 5 that I'm not very computer literate. She then said that what she was going to walk me through on the phone was "similar" to bidding's fix. Very nice girl and an ebay buyer, BTW. Then I called back in for the $ credit to the billing dept. & told them what's been happening. That's all I can tell ya, but so far so good.

THE SOLUTION "TO SERVER NOT FOUND" FOR COMCAST USERS!

Jan 28, 2007 3:10 PM
Wheeeh! Finally back in. I called Comcast again. They passed me on to Microsoft support. I upgraded to IE7 a few weeks ago and the tech service was free - an anomoly for Microsoft. The bottom line according to Microsoft is that the problem is with eBay, not Comcast or IE7. There are no problems accessing other sites or eBay buy and sell pages, just the eBay boards and searches. Comcast passes the request on to eBay and they can't handle it. Even within eBay an attempt to run a favorite search or to search from the BUY page gets the "Server Not Found" message. Does eBay monitor these discussions? If so, where are they? Why can't they give us a timeline for a solution? I received a response from a guy on another board that has Comcast. He changed his browser and still has the problem so that lets IE7 off the hook. Those that are having the problem, what is your ISP and your browser?

I have been having problems for 2 weeks; thought it was totally comcast as they did have a problem in our area which was fixed on Friday. When the problem continued once their issues within our neighborhood were corrected, I came across this. For the first time in 2 weeks I am not getting the message "server not found" when I do or did almost any activity on Ebay... Thank you so much!

Does eBay monitor these discussions?

They do when they are told about them. There is another thread on this discussion board about these "Server Not Found" issues. The eBay techs have been pointed there. So far it's a record with 3 different eBay reps responding, but only Avery seems to have a clue and has been trying to find the problem based on the info we give him.

If so, where are they?

On the other thread.

Why can't they give us a timeline for a solution?

I think they first have to admit it's their problem, and they haven't done that yet. Comcast (no surprise) and Microsoft are pointing the finger at eBay. EBay says it's Comcast, but now other isp's are beginning to have the same problem, so.....

I just got an email last night from an eBay rep responding to my complaint about this earlier last week. I even sent the url to the thread discussing this in my report. He told me "no one else is reporting this problem" so it must be just me. This is an indication that eBay is in denial. As such, don't expect to see antyhing about this on the system announcements. Much less a timeline to a solution.

For more info, check out the "Server Not Found" thread on the Technical Discussion board.

Was starting to get worried.Ebay historically for me has always been slow and i have just figured it was the size of the site and bad coding but i used those dns #s and boom, problem solved. Thanks to whoever posted this,it fixed a long standing problem that, as of late, had been getting to the point where Ebay was almost completely offline for me.
This is why open source has been so important for the internet,if it was corporations that solved the problems,no one would be online.
