Missy the kitty update
May 11, 2012 05:35 PM
|
For those who have followed the saga of Missy, my mom's kitty, I have an update.
Just a little background for those who don't know. Missy went out one night a few weeks ago and came home with a broken back leg. She went to the vet who put her leg in a vet made splint cast and she has been doing well. She gets around up and down stairs and while hasn't let the cast stop her, she has slowed down a bit. Her leg drags a little behind her.
Well, even though mom knows she shouldn't, she has been letting Missy outside. Missy can look pretty pitiful when she wants something and neither mom or dad say no to the kitties.
The day before yesterday dad saw her tossing a dead chipmunk around. He brought her in and threw the chippy away. Later, I found another one, I think that one of the other cats caught them for Missy since she can't catch them herself.
So yesterday mom went out to do a little weeding and took Missy who parked herself next to the stool - the same one I posted a pic of last year. So here she is.

She has about three more weeks of the cast and then she can go off and be the kitty she has always been. She has lost about half a pound and is down to 5 1/2 pounds.

Well OMG Retrose... I have been so blissfully oblivious, to the turn of events with Missy. As I have been making the effort to be disciplined aout spending too much time reading these boards.
Poor little girl. I'm glad that she is a resilient cat, and doing better. I'm sure she will adapt to her handicap okay.
But still... It huts my heart, that she had to go through such an ordeal.
{{{{Missy}}}

{{{Retrose}}}}
My cat had surgery this morning, and I'm dreading having to confront her plummeted Spirits, when she returns home this afternoon. She had a temporary reprieve of her pain, from her bladder stones, the last couple days, and it really sux, that I had to take her in for surgery, when she was feeling so chipper.
I'm hoping her recovery is quick, and her Spirit forgiving.

We all thank everyone for their continued concern and moon, I surely hope that yours is doing as well as Missy. Cats just don't have the part of the brain that humans do that dwells on stuff.
Missy does just about everything she did before she broke her leg except jump up. She can jump down, and thankfully she was never interested in being high up. She goes outside but does not wander far from the door at night. She will lay on the step or on the sidewalk and nap or head out into the garden.
When I see her nub, my heart goes out to her but it's hard to feel sorry for her when she just gets up and hops over to the food dish and shoves the others out of the way and then goes to the door when she is done.
Burns, when I was in high school, my best friend's next door neigher had an accident with a live power line. He was about 3 years younger than us, but we knew him enough to spend the summer going to visit him in the hospital to cheer him up. Some of the stuff we pulled could fill a book. It was hard, he had 6 operations that ended up taking most of his arm. He was fitted with a hook (this was back in the 70s) and he needed to have it refitted every now and then as he grew and changed. While it won't grow back, the body is always growing and adding to itself.
I'm glad you guys liked my taxedermy and your ideas, tempest are great. I'm going to start listing some ont he craft site, but i might post a few pics here.

I had a dog that lost an eye...didn't seem to phase him at all! It is a wonder how adaptable animals are....
I would love to see more pictures of the taxidermy.... The funniest thing I have seen in a very long time....
Kudos to your creativity! I'm going on a guilt trip. Can you stop by and feed my paranoia?

I've talked about how Slinky watches over Missy, I finally got a good pic of it. Missy came in from hunting chipmunks outside and it's 104 outside so she just laid down and Slinky came over and touched her a few times and then laid down next to her.
It's really cute how one will stretch and touch the other and a few minutes later the other will stretch and touch the first one.

Speaking of vacuuming the floor. My rear bedroom, had oodles of boxes stacked up. Items that need to moved around in my small abode, though had yet to find a permanent home. I've been tackling these chores, off and on for weeks now--Decluttering and reorganizing throughout the house.
We'll say it has been a very long time, since that room had a thorough vacuuming. Tackled it this past weekend. And just now, when I went to throw something away in my kitchen trash, I was startled for a moment. As it appeared there was a CAT in the trash can! Took a moment for it to register...it isn't a cat, it is just the cat HAIR, from me dumping my vacuum cleaner dirt cup in there a few times. YIKES!
At least I know the vacuum cleaner is WORKING!

There has not been much happening with Missy lately. Her staples are out, the fur has grown back and she acts like she doesn't have a problem. She has gone back to her regular routines.
She does have a hard time jumping and lands badly for the most part when she does it while playing. But a couple of nights ago after almost 25 days of 90 and 100 degree heat, and only 1.5 inches of rain in a month and a half, we got a thunderstorm late night. Since Missy and her brother Buster (he's a story by himself) are usually outside at night mom went down to let them in.
Sure enough they were soaked, but mom swears that Missy jumped up on the ledge to get on the porch when she called them.
She has jumped in and out of the bathtub to show us she can, but that's a 4 foot jump so maybe she is better than we thought, or mom was a little fuzzy on observing because it was late.
But here are some pics that I took of her today. She always looks great in the yard and one that just shows her new stalking technique.

What a beauty! I wish I thought I could take my kittehs out and not have them scoot off I know they must miss going out, but there is no way I will let them out again unless they are in a pen or on a leash. I have a friend who has little velcro harnesses for her kitties and a steel cable run for them. They have been doing that since they were babies, though.
Bandit will follow me anywhere, but the cats I don't trust to do this since I made them housecats. Miss Nosey used to be the most insistent about following me, but I would have the MomCat and the four kittens all follow me to the bus stop and back every morning. Is the morale improving around here yet?

Mom believes that even if the kitties don't live longer, that they will have happier lives if they are going out and doing things they love. So she lets all of them out if they want to go. Missy likes it outside and Buster, her grey brother spends most of his time patrolling the neighborhood.
I don't allow my kitties outside, one is too stupid to figure out how to come back, the others don't show a lot of interest in going out. One will barely come downstairs, let along go to the door. This is a different neighorhood than they are used to and even though there is a lot less car traffic, I still don't want them out.
Buster is a strange kitty. All four kitties, including the two tubbies, are from the same litter and Buster was the leader of the pack that originally was six. Two died of kidney failure a few years ago.
Buster was so cute, he had a fuzzy face and bright alert eyes and he was the one that would figure out and strong arm (paw) his way out of the kitten confines and roam the house. He would then come back and encourage the others to get out and run through the house. He is a gray on gray very slight tabby male and was a loved kitty.
But over the years he's become isolated with no real contact with his siblings and he goes outside most of the time. When he is in, he eats treats and sleeps. For all the treats he eats, he should be a fat rolly polly but he's not. And he sleeps a lot. He sleeps hard, he doesn't wake up for anything.
He's actually a little mangy, and has been for years. His fur has no gloss and its kind of dry and patchy and he eats the same stuff Missy does so it can't be nutrients. He's just one of those kitties that doesn't age well. It's so different from that fluffy cute little kitten that he started life as.
A few years ago he came home with a scratch across his eyebrow across his eye and under it. His eyeball wasn't hurt but after a few weeks he started looking like Popeye with one squinty eye. After a few months and it just didn't get better we took him to the vet. The scratch healed unevenly and his eyelashes turned inward and were rubbing against his eyeball.
So Buster the mangy cat got plastic surgery and an eye tuck. They cut a small slice out of his eyelid and sewed it back together so it would roll back out. It healed up nicely with almost no scar but he still gives us the squinty eye if we don't give him what he wants.
He is spoiled. He demands treats and if you don't get up and let him out when he wants to go, he will claw you up. If we are asleep and he wants out, he will howl outside the bedroom doors and dad has his closed now because he is tired of Buster going in and jumping on his chest and clawing up his face for him to get up.
The difference between Buster and Missy is that if Buster wants out and you don't let him out, he will hunt you down and claw your leg and pester you until you let him out. Missy will go to the door and if she comes to you and ask and if you say no she will go to the landing and take a nap.
When he comes back in I'll see about getting a pic of him.

Got em. This is Buster eating treats off the treat throne and then 10 minutes later, he's out like a light. The glints in the back is Slinky thinking about pestering him to play.

Rose, thanks so much for the update on Missy. Her stalking technique is remarkable. Nothing seems to slow her down, does it!
I think Buster is a major charachter. I can just imagine all the curmudgeonly thoughts in that little kitty head! Give me my treats and no one gets hurt.....Nap time...do not disturb.

He carries out the threats, scarlet. That pink stepstool is called the treat throne and when he comes in he will check the food dish nearby and if there is no fresh food in it, he sits on the treat throne and meows a little. If no one comes and gives him fresh treats - he won't eat the ones already laying there - then he will go to anyone sitting nearby and meow. If we still ignore him or are doing something else, he sharpens his claws on our legs. He does this if he wants out, too.
Those bags of treats aren't cheap either. He eats them like Cat Chow regular food. He can go through a bag a day. Dad will set out handfulls for the cats while I would only set out three per cat every couple of days. My cats were skinny until they came to live here. Slinky is getting chunky.
Buster spends almost no time with the other cats and most of it outside. When he comes in, it is to eat or sleep. And his sleeping in the pic, I could easily pick him up and carry him upstairs and lay him on a bed and he wouldn't wake up. He is really unconcious when he sleeps. Makes me wonder how he does it outside.

Thank God for cat treat coupons! Kroger had the Temptations on sale last week,99 cents a pack I think. Dawg eats his share of hairball cookies and if he does not, he hacks up hariballs, his white fur & kittehs' black fur!

My cat Chinchilla will only eat Cat Chow, he never eats canned food or treats at all.
Dad buys the ones that he thinks the cats will like and he's one of those that doesn't like coupons. When him and mom go out shopping every week, he is humiliated when she whips them out and gets about 30 bucks back.
But this is how spoiled Buster is.. Dad will go out early in the morning and drive 8 miles to the grocery to buy a bag of treats if they ran out the day before. You do not want that animal clawing up your legs. He thinks I don't know.

Awwww....
I think it's sweet that your Dad is such a softee for the kittehs....My Dad was that way about our/my dogs. That guy would sneak around and feed the dogs treats.
If the dogs had to go to the vets, he would fuss and coo at the dogs. I'm not sure if he was comforting them or himelf!

I am not exactly sure why some posts get pulled and others stay. I had a stalker a couple of months ago and now most of what i post stays and others get nailed. Although I think if a lot of the posters would just not mention the posts that are gone, it won't keep happening.
ebay posted a big nasty warning about OT posts across the top.
And if you didn't see it, in the chat rooms, a pink, Kate is asking for ideas and clarification from the survey.
And snappy is going out of business. That is such a shock.
My dad is funny about the cats. He taught Slinky how to jump up. Slinky makes him smile. Basically if he pats his thighs and then puts his hands up. Slinky knows that the lap is open and he jumps up.
He used to just put his claws in and pull himself up. I told a friend of mine about it and one day she saw my upper thighs that looked like a pile of fresh hamburger and realized that I was not exaggerating. It's so much nicer to pat twice, put my hands up and there he is.
My cats are so much more interactive than mom and dads. Two of theirs are grossly obese and barely move around and Missy and Buster don't like to deal with the sucking up of humans (stuff like getting picked up or petted they don't like) and spend a lot of time outside.
My guys are all over the place and at different points of the day will want some kitty love. And they don't care who gives it to them.

Wow, Snappy's throwing in the towel? They just don't get it, do they?
My Fat Cat still hurls himself up on the kitchen counter. I'm not sure how he manages, but he flings himself at the edge of the sink and somehow gains purchase with his back feet and gets up there so he can go bask in the garden window.
Every now & then I go check for email on this account. Seems there is usually some sin that had been noted.
Who cares? The Olympics are fun! I am trying to watch a lot of the feeds on the computer. I saw a lot of the men's gymnastics prelims this morning. Is the morale improving around here yet?

I have a great pic of Missy just now. Mom sticks her on her bed and she lounges for about an hour and then jumps down. The front paws do most of the work.
So here she is looking all cute and I took a couple of pictures. The one with my hand is to show how small she is. I have a small girl hand about a 6 3/4 glove size.
She made a break for it and went downstairs. She may be all cut, but she doesn't like being touched.

Got another one. Went to the bathroom in the middle of the night and saw this. She may look like she's been in some horrid accident, but she is really comfortable sleeping this way. New Yoga position, backwards bending cat.
Although I think that she has a few sore spots, Slinky was playing with her last night and she let out a howl the whole neighborhood could hear. I realized that she doesn't sit anymore, she just lays down and only on one side. Unless she lays like this.

About a week after her leg came off, mom was in the bathroom and Missy came in and jumped into the tub. Mom thinks she did it to show mom that she can still do things. Before all this happened she used to drink faucet drip. We'd turn it on when she would get into the tub and turn it off when she was done. It was her way of getting special treatment.
Although yesterday she was sleeping outside on the step and it was thundering and had stormed most of the day. So I opened the door to see if she wanted in. She half got up and fell off the step. Then she kept trying to get up and kept falling over, down the steps, and she was in the grass flopping around until I picked her up and carried her into the house.
Dad says that she forgets sometimes that she's lost the leg. Good that it isn't a great trauma that haunts her every minute, but she looked so pitiful while it was happening.
