Burnsie's story about the equestrienne event made me think of the year that I was a Cowboy Medic at Frontier Days.
Frontier Days is a 10 days event in Cheyenne Wyoming in Late July. It is chock full of western events such as Parades, Pancake Breakfasts, sideshows, concerts and the all important Rodeo Events.

Now that's what I call fun. I would love to go to something like that. They don't have anything that exciting around here.

Yes, It is a lot of fun. Volunteers get to go to many of the events for free. PLUS the pancake breakfast and the parades and the "slack time" rodeo events are free to all.
The thunderbirds do a show every year as well... usually on Wednesday. The first year they had it at the airport the FAA made them close and evacuate all the streets and houses along the flight path, virtually cutting the city in half for a little over two hours. Only emergency vehicles were allowed to pass from one side of town to the other.
Oh, the Pancake Breakfast is fabulous! It startes early in the morning. The local scout troups bring in a big flat bed trailer. The scout masters are on the trailer cooking pancakes and sausages on huge griddles on the trailer with great big spatulas. When the pancakes are ready they toss them over their shoulder and the scouts are required to catch them on great big cookie sheets! Sometimes they miss and the crowd goes wild! Cheering when they catch and jeering when they miss. The line wraps around the entire downtown area at least two or three times. As you move through the line, if you are sociable (which is a requirement to participate in Frontier Days) you will meet people from all over the country AND all over the world!
They strart planning the event before the current one has finished. There is also a midway and carnival rides. Most cities have a county fair... most states have a state fair... Cheyenne, Wyoming has Frontier Days!
They have "Night SHows" (concerts) featuring such celebrities as Garth Brooks, Rascall Flatt and the like. There is a different show every night.
The Air Force base started out life back in the 1800's as an Army outpost called Fort Russel so during the event they sponsor the D. A. Russel Days. They open the base to civilians and have western reenactments and offer tours of the officer's houses that were built back in the 1800's. The base is on the National register of historical places so they maintain all the vintage structures in their original appearance.
My house was half way between the downtown activities and the Rodeo Grounds all by neighborhood streets so I could ride my bicycle back and forth to my duties at the rodeo and all the cool stuff going on downtown.

It is such a big thing with such a huge draw of people that ALL municipal projects revolve around the Rodeo Schedule. One year they hired a contractor to rebuild Lincoln Way and tpart of the contract was that the rod had to be fully functional in time for the event. The contractor fell behind and not only did they have to pay a HUGE fine but they also had to make the road safe for travel during the event, installing temporary traffic signals and temporary road surfaces that had to be removed afterward to complete the project... all at the contrctor's expense. I heard they lost money on that project because of it.
Some people that are not interested in participating in the event plan vacations during that time and rent their homes to tourists for the week at costs that pay for their vacations.
Besides the oil refinery, The Union Pacific Railroad and the Air Force base it is the only influx of cash in to the community. Many retailers and such do not turn a profit all year until then.

Wow...I have never heard of a place that had such a huge event. That sounds like so much fun, and it seems there's something that would suit everyone's interests. Ambition is a poor excuse for not having enough sense to be lazy.

Hellooooooo Lucky and friends of the PLU!
Well; it's another warm day here. It's in the low 80s and the humidity lifts the temp up into the 90s.
My area got about fifteen minutes of hard rain but, fortunately, only the smallest chucks of hail. No damage to the apartment and shortly after the storm; the skies became clear again.
At least one funnel cloud was spotted about a hundred miles away, though. I'll keep you posted and let you know if there was any other threats or trouble.
Adrienne; come over here and get your hearing checked! lol

That is the beauty of that effect-the focusing is in the imagination and I gots plenty o' that!!! Some people are clinging hideously to their idiocy!

In the first day, if you park on the serie road on the east side of interstate 25 you can watch the cattle drive as the ranchers drive cattle down the side of the service road right in to the rodeo grounds.
There is also an old family ranch on the south side of town that has tours of the ranch with a chuck wagon meal. They also have buffalo on property, a resturant and shows.
When I lived there the population of the city was 50,000 and during the event they estimated the population surged to 250,000!

Never explain - Your friends do not need it and your enemies will not believe you anyway.
