Hi k!ssoff - You’re right – fake Second Chance Offers are a frustrating experience. We will be including Second Chance Offers in My Messages, and you will be able to tell that a Second Chance Offer is from eBay because all messages from eBay will have a blue background in My Messages. -Laura Laura Mather Trust and Safety

Re Laura M's #72 in reply to my #33 and #46 ... Thank you Laura. I checked the link you gave, and there are but 5 cases listed, the most recent being 4/14/05. I don't mean to say I'd like a live webcam trained on the prison cells where these creeps are being held so I can gleefully throw popcorn at my computer screen, but at least could you guys show more cases, in date-descending order, and maybe even include the perps' mug shots? Seems like that would be reasonable recognition for our efforts out here in the community. The APWG posts samples of the phishes it receives, with explanations of how they work. That's fine for studying them, but I really would rather know the fraudsters are being charged and prosecuted and then put away for a long time. THAT is what would make me feel a whole lot better! Another group you may want to hook up with is http://www.mailsecurity.net.au/. They maintain a block-list of phishers that hooks into the open-source SpamAssassin project. I learned of these folks at http://www.surbl.org/lists.html, where a bunch of these block-lists are discussed. It's a global thing, of course, and I hope to see some pictures a la Boris and Natasha as you and your colleagues haul more of these characters in. Thanks again ~ "I have one share in corporate Earth, and I am nervous about the management." - E.B. White

orange_cape_hides_me, this Brown Bag Lunch is an answer to exactly that desire of the Community for regular interaction with our T&S team. Plus, we have had Avery spend some time here responding to questions.
Specific issues need to be addressed in the proper forms - the web forms.
Moderation of the boards is another issue entirely, and driven by the "report" buttons.

Hi Caped: This Brown Bag Lunch is an effort to stay close to the Community and those that post on the TnS board. If the Community finds this helpful, we will have our team hold a workshop like this once a month as long as the interest persists. If in between these workshops anyone notices specific sellers committing Trust & Safety violations, please report them via our webforms. Thanks, Matt

jewelry-connection, Regarding post 89. Historically, eBay has never told its sellers what is the appropriate price to begin an auction or list their item. It’s clear that it’s tough to make a living on one penny BIN listings and we are currently evaluating what is the appropriate approach with these listings. Thanks. Hi hotspringstradingpost - There are many factors that we consider when we determine whether or not a listing is fraud. Unfortunately, we’re not able to go into everything we do here (the bad guys might be reading this!). Having said that, we are continually adapting our techniques to find as much of the bad behavior as possible. -Laura Laura Mather Trust and Safety

Hi clewis 3888, eBay is working on a number of initiatives that will help us detect these kinds of listings sooner and remove them faster. We intend to do better on this, and we are putting resources against it as we speak. If you are aware of any fraudulent listings, please don’t hesitate to let us know using the site webforms. We will suspend any seller who engages in blatant counterfeiting activity, and have referred a number of these sellers to law enforcement. Sophie, Trust and Safety

jewelry-connection, even when helping, we must follow the rules. However, I would be glad to work with you or anyone else to learn how to make those helping posts without violating the board policy. It can be done, just takes a little more care.

Regarding post 92. Thanks for the suggestion. As we evaluate the best approach to take with these low priced, fixed priced items we will consider a number of solutions, including evaluating volume of transactions and business viability, while balancing the needs of different sellers objectives. As the person that manages the feedback system, I don’t like these listings when they are abused since they undermine the integrity of the feedback system. Hi all_fakes: eBay assumes people are basically good but we look at a variety of factors to decide whether an item or member needs to be investigated, including time on site and feedback. Sometimes high feedback sellers still commit violations. Consequences of a violation should be applied to the offense, not the offendor. That is - if a PowerSeller violates an eBay policy, the PowerSeller should be subject to the same consequences as a non-PowerSeller. That's a level playing field. If that hasn't happened uniformly in the past, we will apply them uniformly going forward. We will be making an announcement at eBay Live related to education and new consequence guidelines that should help keep the playing field level. Thanks, Matt

Hi twin-dad- Unfortunately, prosecuting the people who perpetrate phishing fraud is a time-consuming effort. We have arrests at various times through the year, but building a case, getting law enforcement involved, and making the arrest can take months. Having said that, we are more committed than ever to making sure that the community knows about the work we are doing to find these people and put them in jail. I’ll look into mailsecurity as well. Thanks for the recommendation! -Laura Laura Mather Trust and Safety

mrsmulberry, Regarding post 102. We encourage all members to keep their feedback public since it enhances safety by helping members make informed decisions about their potential trading partners. However, we also recognize that there are times when it may be appropriate for a member to make their feedback private. For example, a member may wish to make their feedback private as they wait for eBay to respond to their report of a comment that violates eBay feedback removal policy. Or they may already have an established brand and do not want any negative comment harming that brand, so they are willing to accept the stigma associated with private feedback rather than have a negative comment tarnish their brand.

Hi Everyone: Thanks so much for all the great questions and input. It was very helpful for our Trust & Safety team. We hope this was helpful for you and that you’ll continue to participate in these TnS Brown Bag Lunches. Please provide us feedback on whether we should continue these. If enough of you all think we should, we’ll continue them monthly. The next one is currently scheduled for Monday, July 11 at 10am pdt. We look forward to hearing more of your questions and comments. Thanks again, Matt
