Lots of FAKE DVD sets out of Toronto, Canada

I recently received a counterfeit Seinfeld Complete Series box set from the seller woodys.movies out of Toronto, Canada. Listings were removed by Ebay, but the seller was not. Seller also had other accounts started in Feb. 2012 that he is currently selling under: amazon.dvd.clearance, peters.pickings, and sears.clearance.centre. The last of these already has feedback stating counterfeit. Box sets include Seinfeld, Friends, Frasier, Star Trek, Grey's Anatomy, Supernatural, House, NCIS and more. The Seinfeld set is listed as a "limited collector's edition," even though it's not. Also says it's a "deluxe coffee book edition" even though all authentic sets include the book. All DVD sets have stock photos only & requests for pictures of the actual item have been ignored. I wouldn't trust any DVD stock photo seller & especially not those out of Canada.

I am looking for DVDs of the HBO series, Treme'--both seasons 1 and 2. I noticed that a few sellers are selling both seasons together (listed as new) for less than Amazon and HBO are selling either season by itself. My first thought is that these are probably bootlet, although they do offer a 14 return period if you're not satisfied. What are the changes that these are legit?

Probably they're not authentic. Especially if the seller only lists stock photos & has a lot of sets available. "Brand New Factory Sealed." That's a suspicious phrase. The seller I bought from had a 30-day return policy, but I wouldn't return b/c then you have to pay the return shipping. Buyer Protection doesn't cover that. Feedback score is no help either, b/c a lot of people don't seem to recognize fakes. The Canada seller I bought from was a "Top Rated" seller with over 99%. Ha. Honestly I can't recommend Ebay at all for buying authentic DVDs. They did come through with Buyer Protection though.

Ah--I see how this works. This is the wording on one item:
Brand New: An item that has never been opened or removed from the manufacturer’s sealing (if applicable).
The seller is in the US (doesn't specify location) and has a 99.9% rating with close to 800 transactions. I guess anyone can manufacture bootleg DVDs. Cindy

I think I see the seller you're talking about. Is it pacificave? I see they're "Top Rated" and started in Nov. 2011. If this is the seller, some of the neutral feedback says the DVDs are copies. It amazes me how Ebay slaps that "Top Rated" label on any seller without even making sure they are selling legitimate products.

Yup--he had 10 of these sets, but sold one. I don't know how Ebay can let someone continue to do this. A number of years ago, a bunch of sellers (mostly from China/Asia) were selling Tiffany jewelry knock-offs. They eventually got rid of all these frauds. What would happen if you bought one of these sets from this guy, and then turned it over to the feds? I know they're always raiding local sellers to find knock-off pocketbooks, movies, etc. What makes online auction sellers any different? Cindy

I think turning it over to the feds sounds like a fun idea. I don't know if they would do anything, though. I was also shocked to find out how many counterfeit sellers are on here. I would think that a site as popular as this would have a Fraud Department or something. Instead it's just a joke. In my case, the Canada seller had all these different user names, so he probably didn't care if one went under. He could just sell on the others & for some reason Ebay doesn't investigate this. Plus it annoys me when buyers say the DVD is a copy, but then say they don't care. And neutral feedback doesn't count as a strike, so then the seller can maintain that phony "Top Rated" status.

I dropped an email to HBO about this, but haven't heard a reply from them. Maybe they don't care? Who knows... I'm sure consumers don't care if it's a bootleg copy if they can get it for 70% less than the item actually retails for. I didn't care when I bought that Tiffany bracelet. Actually, I didn't know it was a fake. I gave it to my niece as a gift, and then the silver started wearing off. Then I felt very foolish... As that old adage, goes, if it's too good to be true...Cindy

You would think HBO would care, since they would be losing money to the counterfeits. You never know though. I guess you'll know if & when they answer your email. Some counterfeits are so similar that most people probably wouldn't notice. Or they could be fooled by a seller's good feedback & think that they're reliable. This was a real learning experience for me & I'm just glad that I noticed so I could get my money back. That's terrible about your Tiffany bracelet! Online shopping is nice, but sometimes it seems like it's more trouble than it's worth.

Still haven't heard from HBO. I guess they don't much care. OH well... I tried. I still think that Ebay should do more to police their own website. Cindy

The price of this set keeps jumping around. It was first $36.99. Then it was $32.99. Now it's up to $39.99. I did find a place on Ebay to report bootleg DVDs, so I'll give it a try and see if they care...

Just reported this seller to ebay. The claim that for privacy reasons, they can't tell you what happens (if anything). Yeah, right...

Probably nothing will come of reporting the seller to Ebay. I tried that with the Canada sellers 2 other accounts, but they did nothing. I've reported listings that state the item is a copy or show a picture of a counterfeit box set & they removed those. But the stock photo ones, they've never removed when I report. Even when I had received the counterfeit, I reported the other listings & Ebay did nothing. They only removed the seller's listings after I filed a claim with them for Buyer Protection. Maybe they put them on a "watch list" or something. It doesn't hurt to report them, but as of now I still see that seller's listing so that's not a good sign. When Ebay did remove listings they did it within a few hours. This whole counterfeit thing is very frustrating. I wonder if HBO will get back to you on Monday? Seems odd that they wouldn't respond at all.
