Is this miser's purse authentic?
Jul 13, 2012 05:17 PM

Hello! I used to deal in vintage clothing and am mostly "retired" from ebay now. However, I couldn't resist picking this item up. It's in such pristine condition that I can't help questioning it's authenticity! It is hand crocheted and hand-beaded. The beads are faceted steel. Are miser's purses of this quality being reproduced now? If it IS antique, will the fact that it has a gentleman's name worked into it be a detriment? A search of completeds shows that these don't go for great $$ amounts but it's a fascinating item. I'll use several posts to attach a total of five photos.

Thank you,

Donna

Hi Donna, it looks great to me.  I am not aware that anyone would be reproducting these.  The cut steel beads and rings are hard to find let alone doing the handwork.  Great piece!  And I collect antiques that are personalized so the name would be a plus fo rme, makes it unique.

Thanks so much for your reply!

I had no idea that beads/rings/danglies of that precision could be produced in the Victorian era. Careful scrutiny reveals one dangly missing from the "tassel" end but other than that, it's as new-looking as can be.... hence my questioning it's authenticity.
