16th Century Purse Inquiry

Good afternoon,

I have a very old purse. And I am seeking to find out more about it. (Please see attachments for photos) It was given to me by a friend who said she thinks it comes from the 16th Century. I am not sure. I am hoping you can help me identify it and also if it has any monetary value. I have attached some images for you. There is no provenance.

The purse measures 4 ¾ “ in Height  X  5 ¾ “ Wide. There appears to be copper strips sewn into the purse along with copper accents.

Thank you for your help. Also if you, are unable to assist me could you recommend someone who can.

Hi, Bruce:

Thought I might be able to help since I have a bit of an Elizabethan geek in me but, no.

European glass beads have been around since the 1300s.  I cannot tell if those are buttons or sequins (pailettes) but sequins have been around for centuries.  I cannot tell if the embroidered sections are flat or padded or formed over a wire.  Padded & wire are forms of stumpwork which could place it in the 1600s.

The pattern design does remind me more of a Jacobean design which would put it early 1600s.

It is a lovely piece and, perhaps, you could find a medieval or renaissance discussion board on the topic.  Try the SCA (Society of Creative Anachronism) or some of the Renaissance Festival (Faire) discussions sites.  There are also some of Facebook.  Sift through until you find the right one...some of the people are geniuses on obscure subjects.
