Success Key #6: Suppliers Will Not Give You Their Best Deals the First Time If you are dealing with a supplier for the first time, generally you are not going to get the best prices, know about their best merchandise, or be offered special deals on shipping etc.
Often times when people contact suppliers for the first time they are disheartened because the wholesale price offered is higher than they had hoped. They see other people selling the same product on eBay at a more competitive price and wonder who this “mystery supplier” is where they can buy products at the same competitive prices.
Well, the good news is the “mystery supplier” is the same supplier that
you are working with.
And the guy next to you just bought the exact same product you want to buy at a lower price.
Before you shout “Hey, that’s not fair!” remember, this workshop is about what you need to hear, not what you want to hear.
And the reality of it is this. The eBay seller next to you may have been doing business with this supplier for 2 years and sells a lot of merchandise and is now getting a volume discount. He may have worked hard to build a relationship with Joe the supplier who now calls him on a regular basis to tell him about the latest and greatest deal. He may place reorders at certain times of year when the supplier is offering free shipping.
There are any number of reasons why another eBay seller is getting a better price point than you are.
But don’t get discouraged.
You have to start somewhere!
That first small order you place today which nets you a thinner profit margin can in 6 months, turn into a much larger order purchased at volume discounts that brings in a healthy profit margin.
If a product you are looking to sell is important to your product line, then take that first step and place an entry level order with the supplier. Then continue to work with the supplier on pricing with every reorder.
Before you know it, you will be the seller about who people wonder “Where are they getting their merchandise?”
Success Key Exercise #6: Take the first step with a supplier and place an entry level order. Don’t expect established customer prices from your wholesale supplier if you are a new seller. Work with your supplier going forward on pricing as you place future orders.
