Outlet buying and selling: Catalog Returns and Overstock

Hello! Welcome to our workshop this evening on Outlet Malls and their merchandise. Our goal is to educate all on the wonderful shopping available out there for fun or profit. We hope that we can help your Ebay experience and answer any questions that you may have. Whether you want to buy at an outlet to sell or just get the good deals for yourself, the information we will give you should make it easier for you!

Let us start by introducing ourselves. Our name is Mommykit and we are two stay-at-home mommies who buy and sell here on Ebay. We have been selling here for a few years and have been doing pretty well.

The items we mainly sell are Catalog Returns and Overstock items from the Williams Sonoma and Pottery Barn stores. We purchase these items from the Outlet store near our home. This workshop is to help other people learn about thse items and how they "work".

Please feel free to jump in at any time with a question, we are happy to help!

Outlet Store Buying

Before you go foray into Outlet Store buying, you need a definition of what a true outlet store is.

We all know about the Outlet Malls that have been popping up all over the country for the past several years. What you need to know is that not all stores in an outlet mall are "discounted". There is a trend now that has regular retail stores in an outlet mall with no true discounts. These stores carry the same items at the same prices you could find in a mall. These are not the stores we buy from. We buy from true outlet stores.

The kind of outlet store that we shop at has discounted items that a store would normally carry in a retail store or catalog setting. These items generally fall into five different categories: outlet stock, overstock, seconds, refurbished, and catalog returns.

If we are ready, lets begin!

How to find an Outlet

As we stated before, there are outlet malls popping up all over the country. In some places, they even specialize. In Tennesee, there is an outlet mall that just consists of designer clothes. It is a great place to vist if you are looking for fancy clothes but you will not find the Hoover store there! Finding these are fairly easy. You can contact your states visitor's bureau and they will have pamphlets and such about these places. Usually, they are located right off of an interstate. If you are travelling in your car someplace, then you will almost always see billboards for outlet malls.

Sometimes, you can find a freestanding outlet store. These are not always as easy to find. They can be near a certain manufacturer and they sell items just of that manufacturer. Victoria's Secret, Longerberger Baskets and Escort Radar Detectors all have outlet stores. However, they are all located near the manufacturer plants. Coincidentally, they are all located in Ohio! So, if you live near that neck of the woods, you are in luck! You may have to do some driving, but you can get to all of them.

There are places that have more than one manufacturing plant and outlets near them. Tyson Chicken has those but you wouldn't be able to sell fresh chicken here!

You should also look around where you live for "discounter outlets". This is a new-ish trend. These are stores that will buy items wholesale and re-sell them at a significant discount to you. Near where we live is a lingere outlet. This store buys pallet loads from manufacturers and resells them cheaply. These places can be located anywhere and are usually a stand alone store.

Well I know of a outlet mall but the prices there are just as high as in the regular mall. Now how can I compete on ebay with retail prices. There must be something i'm missing

Thanks for your question mamaxt.

It depends on the store.

Just like a regular mall, each store has its own policy. Some stores have an "all sales final" policy while others will refund your monay at any time with a "no sale is ever final" policy.

But generally, the stores have a middle ground. From what we have seen, a month is a general return period.

But you need to make sure of the policy BEFORE you buy.

Hi,
Can you define each category of outlet items (i.e. seconds, refurbished, catalog returns, overstock) and tell us how do you know which items are which when visiting a discount outlet store?

OUTLET MALL SECRET*

This is a secret that we are determined to let everyone know so they don't overspend.

Practically all Outlet Malls will have a discount book for the asking!!!

It is true! When you go to an outlet mall, there will be a customer service area. If the mall has a food court, it is located there. If not, then look for the Mall offices and it should be there. Just go up to the counter, and ask for the coupon book. Really, it is that simple. Just ask! Sometimes they will ask for your zip code, or to fill out a form with your address, but most of the time they will happily hand over a coupon book good for stores in the mall.

Now, not all the stores will be in the book, and some of the "discounts" are not real good (like a free keychain with a $75 purchase), but you will probably find a discount at a store you like. One of our favorites is a 20% discount on an item as a certain baby store we frequent for our children. Hey, every penney counts.

Please pass this on to everyone you know!

In my postings that I have coming up, I hope to answer your questions so I won't address that one right now, but after I finish my posts, please ask anything I have not answered.
