eBay Expert Member Workshop: Searching and Buying Collectible Buttons on eB

Feb 5, 2003 4:57 PM

Hello and Welcome to my eBay button workshop. I hope to provide some tips
that will help in your search for collectible buttons on eBay. Things to
watch for, some basic button terminology, and where you can find more
information.

My name is Clare, abuttonlady on ebay and, yes elsewhere. I didn't start out
calling myself 'The Button Lady', it just sort of grew on me. There are lots
of other "Button Ladies"out there, but buttons are my specialty and when you
sell buttons that's what you're called. I divide my time between race
horses, button or quilt shows and selling buttons on eBay.

Yes, I did say "Race Horses". My husband and I have been training racing
Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds for 20 years. I feel very fortunate in
being able to do everything I love and make money at it too.

I've always thought that to be a good dealer, you don''t just sell your
merchandise, you know your product and help the customer learn about what
they are purchasing. To that end I hope this workshop today will further
that interest. I invite you to ask questions and learn to date buttons as to
their era, material and value. Along the way it is my hope to save valuable
buttons from being used for craft projects and to encourage others in the
collecting of buttons.

Of course my buttoning ventures have helped my own button collection grow as
well. I've been a member of The California State Button Society for about 8
years. Other club members have contributed much to my growing knowledge of
buttons. Some of the most interesting buttons I have collected include a
hand-painted miniature on Ivory and some Enameled, Sterling, Arts and Crafts
period buttons. The oldest buttons I own are from the 18th century, one of
which is from the French Revolution and has a catgut shank.

I have a number of posts to make in succession and then I will be happy totake questions.

In you opinion, what are the "hottest" selling buttons on eBay? What should we watch for when we are at garage sales & estate sales?

The best ones to sell are those that are figural or with pictorial subject matter. High-end Bakelite buttons are realistic shapes of items or animals. The really big $$ buttons are those from the 18th century.

If you are able to buy a collection from a true button collector, rather than button box buttons, you are one lucky garage sailer:)

Hi, Clare, if buttons after 1918 are considered modern, how can I clearly describe a button as modern vintage, discontinued, out of production, (anything but antique) and be sure a buyer knows what I mean? Also, what are the eras people would be familiar with in a modern button? I'm thinking like WW2 era, 50's era, etc. Thanks. Karen

Do you have any tips on displaying button collections?

Many collectors display their buttons on 9 X 12 mat-board cards, using plastic covered telephone wire to hold them on the card. Thru a shank and punched holes on the card. This is nice for shadow boxes.

I'll think of more ways...and add as I go:)

Clare

I've seen a few websites mention the 409 for bakelite testing. Not just for buttons but for any bakelite. And you mentioned making a paste but does'nt the paste leave scratches?? What kind of cleaning paste,, comet? or something like that??

This is one of the biggest questions that button sellers face in this category. so you've asked a doozy.

You have to do a bit of studying. Shanks are important here. If you are NOT sure of a buttons age, try to include pics of shanks in your auction. Collectors will be able to tell much from this.

Arlene, a paste would be best for testing only, not cleaning or polishing...because yes, It could leave fine scratches. It does not take much...what you are really looking for is the yellow color on the cloth.

Clare

I have a couple of buttons that are metal or brass and look like they may have come off a uniform of some sort. What is a good way to research them??

Gee's..I couldn't even figure out how to post a message..lol!! Clare your information is wonderful and your pictures are AWESOME!!!
About glass..of course the tooth test (as you mention) is great but also put the button up to your face..glass will feel cold and plastic will feel warm. Karens question on age is a problem of sorts but how I list is OLD (as you say) made before 1918...I use the word VINTAGE on buttons made before 1980 and after 1980 I list as MODERN...doesn't seem like button collectors use the word ANTIQUE...just OLD...GREAT WORKSHOP...thanks for doing it.

luvtogrden2, I had the same question! Mine look like they might be livery buttons, but it is so hard to tell! :)

I also wondered what to do when shanks are a little rusty.

Arlene, I mentioned a couple of the Uniform button books earlier. But if you don't have access, scanning the Uniform button listings may help. Collectors who frequent those listings are interested in backmarks as well. You can use some of the words from your buttons to search title AND description to find similar buttons.

Katy, per Livery buttons. Most of these are finely made 'one piece' buttons with a crest or heraldic image. One will most always find some back marks on these.

More on Button Display ideas:

I like to 'look' at my buttons, and have a lot of the pretty clear and colorful glass displayed in depression glass candy dishes.

Frame one or two buttons with a chunky 4x4 from your local frame shop. The shabby chic look with a wide white wood frame is pretty.
