eBay Workshop: Attract more buyers with Markdown Manager! - Feb 22

Feb 22, 2007 7:06 AM
Hi everyone,

This is Evan from the Stores team. Thank you all for joining us today, I hope you’re as excited as I am about the new Markdown Manager feature which allows Stores sellers to create Sales and market the new “Sale Price” to buyers.

In this workshop, we will focus primarily on “why” you should use this feature. A “Sale” can be a powerful retail tool; however, it should be used appropriately in order to convey savings to buyers. We will go over some different strategies that you can use to make Markdown Manager work for you.

I’m looking forward to a fun and productive workshop!

Sincerely,
Evan

Let me start by giving you some useful URLs.

You can learn more about using this feature by using our tutorial:

In this tutorial, we briefly go over how to create a sale, and market that sale.

To learn more details about things such as Final Value Fees and technical details, see our FAQs.

To access the feature, you must have an eBay store. Markdown Manager can be found in the left navigation under Marketing Tools. Or you can access it directly through this URL: Link

When you click on the Markdown Manager link, you will be taken to the Manage Sales page.

On this page, you can manage your existing sales, or you can create a new Sale.

Create Sale

On the Create Sale page you will be asked to input the following information:

Sale Name (Only for the Storeowner to see)
Start and end date
% or fixed amount off
Listings

You can select all Fixed Price and all Store Inventory Listings, a specific category or you can select listings individually with our item picker.

Remember, be selective when putting listings on Sale!

On the item picker page, you will see a list of all of your Sales. Once you save your sale, it will appear in this dropdown.

Item Picker

With this filter, you will be able to reselect listings from an old sale and put them into a new one.

Choose the Sale that you’d like to filter on and hit “search”. This will pull up all of the listings in the selected sale. To import the items into the new sale, you will need to check off all of the new listings (or use the select all option on the top of each page).

You can also reschedule a Sale once it is inactive. As long as all of the listings in the Sale are still active, this will allow you to recreate the same exact sale.

Where Will Sales Appear?

Sale will appear in the following areas:

View Item pages
Cross Promotions on the View Item page
Search results within a Store
Express View Item page
Items I'm Watching
Items I'm Watching Ending Soon email
Stores Promotions boxes
Seller Email Marketing

The special Sale treatment will NOT appear in core searches. This feature is meant to distinguish items from a particular seller, and not to differentiate items among sellers.

View Item Page:

View Item Listing Frame:
The listing frame creates a “portal” into your store and can be a great way to increase traffic to your store from the View Item page. You can enable it here: Link

Select the Link to "Items On Sale" to add the nifty Sale logo to your listing frame.

View Item Cross Promotions:

Stores Promo Box:
If your Sale items appear in Stores Promotion boxes, they will get special Sales treatment. You can edit your promo boxes here: Link

Or, if you’re short on time, you can use the Quick Store Tuneup feature to get default promotion boxes set: Link

Seller Email Marketing:
Sending Sales emails to your buyers is an excellent way to draw attention to your store. Not only can you schedule a Sale, but you can also schedule an email to go out as well. You can schedule emails here: Link

SEM for Sales

Items I’m Watching
Creating a sale is an excellent way to get buyers who are watching your items to purchase them. If a buyer is watching an item before it goes on Sale, and then it subsequently goes on sale, they will see a special Sale message in My eBay!
Items I'm watching

eBay express
If your item shows up on eBay express, and it is on Sale, it will also get special Sales treatment.

Seller Email Marketing:

SEM for Sales

I’d like to Call special attention to the Seller Email Marketing Feature as it’s a great way to get previous buyers to purchase more items. Link

We have created a special “Sale” template with default Sales text and Sales criteria. You are encouraged to personalize the text, but you can also send it out “as is”.

Select the “Items on Sale Email” to send out the email with the Sale logo and text. Note: all emails will have special Sale treatment on individual items, however this template has the larger Sale logo, default text and automatically selects listings on Sale.

Evan, I use good to Cancelled a lot and I run into trouble trying to post sales on items that are going to "recycle" during the sale time frame. Is there any way to include listings that are GTC and fall in that time frame? I often find that those items get attention from buyers and I want to include them. They really don't end, they just "roll over"

I've been learning about this new feature and trying it out. I'm horrible at all the technical stuff so I am glad to see that you have made it easy to include the info in a store newsletter and promo box. Thank you.

Hi Golfingaddict,

You should be able now to add GTC listings to Sales regardless of their "renewal" dates. This was not the case at launch however, so you should try to do it again.

Thanks,
Evan

Stores sellers often ask us why or when they should use Markdown Manager? We recommend that sellers use Markdown Manager to create excitement to their discounted listings when they need to:

• Manage out-of-season excess inventory

• Create excitement with a 24-Hour Sale or 3-Day Sale

• Trigger seasonal shopping with a Post-Holiday, Spring Cleaning, Summer Blowout, or Fall Fest promotion

• Manage Good Til Canceled listings that have not been selling in your Store

• Attract new buyers by using the Stores promotional features

I hope these recommendations help!
