eBay Workshop: Bid History Re-design changes - Sept 05

Aug 31, 2007 10:49 AM
Topic: eBay Workshop: Bid History Re-design changes

Host: eBay Staff
Date: Wednesday 09/05
Time: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Pacific time
Location: Workshop Board

Description: The bid history page is an important tool used by many of our members when monitoring auctions. Based upon extensive research and community involvement, eBay has recently updated this page with new features and functionality to improve the buyer experience. These updates include the ability to bid directly from bid history page as well as improvements to the masking of User IDs over $200. This workshop will be conducted by the buyer experience product management team to discuss the recent changes and the impact it will have on buyers and sellers.

Cheers,

Deirdre

eBay Workshop: Bid History Re-design changes - Sept 05

Making winning easier – bid right from the bid history page
We know from talking to Community members that many people spend a lot of time monitoring competitive auctions from the bid history page. Knowing how important this page is to bidders, my team has enhanced the user interface so you can now place a bid directly on the bid history page.

Here are the major changes to the visitor view:
1) New look and feel that is in line with changes to the homepage and the rest of site.
2) New status section that calls out: # of bidders, # of bids, and time left
3) For active items, we have added the item description to the right hand side and now display: item picture, current bid, shipping cost, and ability to bid/buy and item
4) In the bid history table we have removed the yellow bar highlighting the high bidder and instead bold that line.
5) Adding a starting price and the time entry – we also show the time an auction has ended

Bidding Layers – new way to bid
In select categories, we are testing a new way to bid on auction items. We call it bidding layers and it allows buyers to bid on items without leaving the bid history page. This would be how it looks after you enter your bid amount and place bid:

Enhancing SMI -- adding transparency for items over $200
Last January, Rob Chesnut introduced an important Trust & Safety initiative called Safeguarding Member IDs (SMI). This project protects eBay's bidders on high-end items from fake Second Chance Offers and other malicious email. (Read Rob’s announcement from January 8, 2007 for more details.)

While SMI has been effective in protecting our marketplace from fraud, as Rob made clear back then, we also realize that it reduced transparency on the site, and, for some bidders, took away some of the magic of what makes eBay so unique.
As promised, my group has teamed up with Trust & Safety and the Community over the past few months to look at ways to make the bid history more transparent without jeopardizing the safety that SMI has added. I’m pleased to let you know that this week, we'll be making the following adjustments to the User IDs displayed on bid history for items over $200:
• Actual Feedback Score returns – We will be bringing back the bidder’s actual feedback score next to each member’s respective User ID.

• New User ID Masking - We are replacing the current aliases (Bidder 1, Bidder 2 and Bidder 3) with a masked ID that consists of two random characters from the member’s User ID – for example a***b. For any given member, this masked ID will be consistent across all auctions over $200 for which they place bids. At the end of a listing, the winning bidder's User ID will be displayed on both the item and bid history page. Please note: Sellers will still be able to access bidder information for their listings through the Bid History page and view the actual user ID.

Changes to visitor of bid history over $200:
1) New masking scheme that is consistent across all auctions – Ids are unmasked for the winning bidder when the auction is over
2) Name is linked to bidder details page
3) Removed the bubble help summary to simplify page
4) Feedback score is back but it NOT linked to the feedback page – this would be a fraud loophole

Changes to the bidder details page:
1) Simplified the page by removing information
2) Had to remove user registration date for security reasons
3) Removed the Item number category
4) Removed bids to unique sellers and unique categories
5) Shortened the item category description
6) Shortened help text at bottom
7) Seller still shows “seller 1, seller 2” – this was deemed as too much information

eBay Workshop: Bid History Re-design changes - Sept 05

Congratulations to this team. This is a great redesign and I really like the way it works. I am a little confused about Bidding Details page (RE: post 10) I don't remember ever seeing this page. from where would it be accessed and how does removing registration date( #2) affect the security issue?

Del,
Thanks so much for joining us. You get the bidder details post when you click on a masked ID for an item over $200. I'll let John from TnS to answer the registration date question.
