What are Skypecasts? Skypecasts are a new way to have voice discussions with people across the world who share your interests. Skypecasts are live, moderated conversations allowing groups of up to 100 people. Skypecasts are perfect when you need the richness of a live discussion with real people, at a specific time. Skypecasts launched as a preview product on 3rd May. We wanted to introduce the product as early as possible to gather feedback from Skype and eBay users. This means that there are many exciting features and improvements to come. You can try Skypecasts now, by visiting the new Skypecasts directory. Skype 2.0 or later for Mac or Windows is required, Skype 2.5 for Windows is recommended for the best experience.

Finding a Skypecast Browse the Skypecasts directory to find a Skypecast you want to join: You can browse Skypecasts taking place right now, or ones coming up, and search by keyword for subjects that interest you.

Participating in a Skypecast To join a Skypecast, you’ll need to sign in using your Skype name and password, and then agree to the Community Guidelines. Your Skype software will place a call into the Skypecast and a control window will pop-up showing a list of all the participants and the host. Ok, so you’re in the Skypecast, now what? As in a normal conversation you’re free to chime in whenever appropriate or you can simply listen in to the discussion. In larger discussions, the host can mute individual participants, to help control the discussion. Follow the on-screen instructions to request the microphone, if you want to speak. Once you’ve requested the microphone the icon next to your name will change from green to orange and begin to flash. You can also chat by text with the host and other participants, add contacts, and read profiles. To leave the Skypecast, click the red hang-up button in the main Skype window, and close the control window.

Creating a Skypecast If you can’t find a Skypecast on a topic that interests you, why not host your own? It’s free, and you can host as many as you like. The first step is to visit the Skypecasts directory, and create a listing for your Skypecast: You can choose to start your Skypecast right now, or up to two weeks in the future. Your Skypecast will then appear in the directory for anyone to discover and join: Don’t forget to come back to the directory to host your Skypecast at the time you chose.

Promoting your Skypecast When you create your Skypecast, you can schedule it up to two weeks in advance, to allow plenty of time to build up an audience. Skype will promote your Skypecast in the directory. Here are other ways you can promote your Skypecast:
  • Invite your friends by sending them a link to your Skypecast listing via chat or email.
  • Publish listings on your Typepad blog using the Skypecast Widget.
  • Coming soon: integrate Skypecasts into your website using our simple HTML snippets, or RSS and JSON feeds.

Hosting your Skypecast As the host of the Skypecast, you control the discussion – who can speak, and who can participate. You’re the MC. When your Skypecast is due to start:
  • Find the Skypecast on the Your Skypecasts page (you'll need to sign in with your Skype name and password).
  • Join your Skypecast, just like a normal participant.
  • Your Skype software will place a call into the Skypecast and a control window will pop-up:

Hi Skype team!
One question we've heard from the community is whether Skypecasts can be kept private.

Thanks,
Michele, Skype Marketing

At this time Skypecasts are open to for everyone to participate, but we think it could also be cool to have private Skypecasts as well...for example if someone wanted to host a class with a group of students

Here's another question we get from the Skypecasts forum Hello, Testing skypecast recently, I missed the possibility to send out text messages to all visitors at one time. I could message only one by one. Or did I overlook something? Regards, Martina Dan

It's not possible to automatically start a group chat with Skypecasts today, but we do plan to offer this feature soon. A host should be able to send everyone in the Skypecast a chat or URL, and participants should be able to easily chat with each other

Hi Eric and Dan,
I went to the Skypecast link to join, but I don't see a 'join now' button or anything.

How will I know when/how I can join the Skypecast?

Thanks,
Michele, Skype marketing

We're working on a countdown, which means that you know how long to go to the Skypecast, without needing to refresh the page, and also a "remind me" function, so you can plan to join a Skypecast in the future.

Hi Eric,
just joined the Skypecast (REALLY COOL!) and noticed that it said it was initiating a SkypeOut call...but I'm not being charged.

What does that mean?

Thanks,
Michele, Skype Marketing

Dan here: this message is a bit confusing, and actually goes away if you use the Skype 2.5 Beta or later. We've used the SkypeOut infrastructure for the audio part of the Skypecasts product, but this does not mean you are charged for the call -- it is completely free (just like SkypeOut calls to the US and Canada!)

Great questions in the Skypecast. Here are a couple:

1. Why do Skypecasts have 100 people but Skype conference calls only have 5 people?

2. If I'm on a Skype call and then join a Skypecast, does that interrupt my Skype call?

3. Does sound quality decrease as more participants join?

4. Do you think you'll add video to Skypecasts?

Thanks!

Thanks Michelle.

Q1. Why do Skypecasts have 100 people but Skype conference calls only have 5 people?

A. This is due to a difference in technical architecture. Skype conference calls are acheived by everyone calling directly to the Skype client of the "host" user of the conference. Due to the limitations on the host's PC, they can only handle 5 people at once. For Skypecasts, we use central servers to bridge the calls, which all participants call into, and these servers can scale up to 100 people per call.

Q2. If I'm on a Skype call and then join a Skypecast, does that interrupt my Skype call?

A. It's the same as making a second Skype call -- the first call is put on hold.
