Product Types & Merchandise Selection

One of the biggest distinctions we see between sellers’ listing strategy is based on the type of product being sold. For example, selling unique or hard-to-find items often leads sellers to focus on market determined pricing strategies while selling commodity goods lends itself to focusing on quick inventory reduction and margin based pricing.

Keep in mind Store Inventory format allows listings to be live for unlimited durations, great for add-on or accessory items that compliment your other products or may be slower to sell on their own. Fast-moving products or high-demand items are ideal for the Auction-style or Fixed Priced formats as you can focus on converting the listing to a sale within days. Don’t forget, with more eyes on the listings you can receive a higher sales price through multiple bids, a more satisfactory closing price for your item and drive traffic to your other listings.

As you expand your strategy to include more product types, we’ve provided some general recommendations on which product types are best suited for each format.

Auction-style:

• Unique or hard-to-find items - Auction-style listings can help maximize the final sale prices for these highly sought-after items.

• Popular and Sale items - List items that you expect to generate the most traffic and excitement in Auction-style format

Fixed Price:

• Commodity items - It is generally a good idea to use Store Inventory or Fixed Price for commodity items. Be sure to review comparable items to determine current market pricing.

• Brand New Merchandise - Brand new merchandise may be eligible for extra exposure on eBay Express if listed as Fixed Price or Store Inventory.

Store Inventory:

• Accessories and Add-ons - List these items in Store Inventory or Fixed Price format, and be sure to cross-promote them from the primary item listing. Offer shipping discounts or promotions on these items to maximize add-on sales.

• Multiple styles, Sizes and Colors - If you carry a wide variety of sizes, colors and styles, using Store Inventory can be very cost-effective. Direct buyers from Auction-style and Fixed Price listings to additional sizes and colors of the same items in your Store.

• Multiple Quantity Items - Consider running 10-day Auction-style listings to build traffic and link buyers to the same items at fixed prices in your Store.

• Infrequent Market Demand - If you have items that sell dependably but infrequently, Store Inventory is likely to be the most cost-effective listing format for these items.

• Wide Selection of Related Items - Are you selling a wide selection of related items, such as auto parts or specialized craft supplies? Store Inventory allows you to offer a wider range of inventory, which can help increase total sales and boost profits.

Attracting all types of buyers

As a general rule, we suggest marketing your inventory in all listing formats to appeal to a broad range of buyers, from convenience oriented Fixed Priced and Store Inventory purchases to the bargain hunter using the more traditional Auction format. Keep in mind choosing the right mix of formats should be balanced to meet your business goals. For example, some sellers find they are successful at driving traffic to their Store and Store Inventory format listings by marketing to an existing customer base and thus, can list a greater percentage of their items in Store Inventory format. Other Sellers find that they want to turn items quickly and choose to use only the Auction-style and Fixed Price formats.

Generally, sellers who are able to drive consistent traffic to their eBay Store and foster a repeat buyer base tend to have more success with Store Inventory format and can support a great percentage of their listings in this format. Here are a few key tactics that will enable Store owners to optimize their store to attract and retain new buyers and drive repeat purchases.

Understanding Your Buyer and Site Traffic

In order to maximize your total sales it is important to understand the type of buyers that are visiting your listings and where they are coming from. Here are a few questions you should consider when deciding your listing strategy.

• What percentage of your buyers are return buyers?

• Do your buyers tend to buy multiple related items on the same visit?

• Store Sellers, how many potential buyers visit your store on a daily or monthly basis?

Some of this information is available to you in your own sales data. EBay can also help by providing you access to our Sales Reports and Stores Traffic Reports to better understand these questions. Both of these tools offer free subscription levels.

If you’re just getting started, you may wish to focus on improving three metrics that will help you change your business practices over time: % repeat buyers, average selling price, and conversion rate. Focus on what these numbers mean to your business and ways that you can make small changes to be more efficient. A few examples might include offering a discount on future purchases or focusing on products that sell quickly and with the best rate of return.

Marketing Tactics

When developing your listing format strategy, you must also consider which marketing tactics you use, or plan on using, to drive traffic to your listings or Store. Many methods for driving traffic to your items are format-specific; one of the many reasons we encourage sellers to list in all formats. Some of the following tactics are generally used by our top sellers to drive additional traffic to their listings.

Cross-promotions

It is an eBay Best Practice to cross-promote relevant items to buyers while they are looking at your listings. In particular, we recommend that sellers cross-promote their Store and Store Inventory Listings from their Auction-style and Fixed Price listings.

Store Referral Credit

Store Inventory Format listings are the only format eligible for Store Referral Credit. Sellers who drive traffic to their Store will get 75% of your Final Value Fees back when you drive qualifying traffic to your eBay Store from a location outside eBay. If you are successful at driving traffic from off-eBay directly to your Store Inventory listings, it makes sense to leave some portion of your inventory in Store Inventory.
