eBay Workshop: Cyber Safety for Our Children the Series II - Dec 08

Dec 8, 2006 3:57 PM
Hi all. I received the notice of this just today. I am glad that I was here to participate. I took the little quiz in the e-mail, and although it seemed to be geared for children, I found it interesting none the less. I was unsure about what a "Social Network Site" is. Can you help me, and "enlighten" me on this term.

John

eBay Workshop: Cyber Safety for Our Children the Series II - Dec 08

Dec 8, 2006 3:58 PM
Welcome everyone! My name is Cheryl Fujii and I’m eBay’s Community Outreach Program Manager. Part of my responsibilities here at eBay includes Community outreach and education. As a former elementary school teacher, I am passionate about the safety and education of children in our communities. With the Internet prevalent in many households, families may need to focus more on their teen’s activities on the Internet and the environment of the family computer. In today’s workshop we will be discussing ways to ensure a safer Internet experience for teens. Our hope is that you’ll walk away with a better understanding of Internet issues teens face and can apply your new knowledge in your household or classroom. Resources for further review and reference will be provided toward the end of the workshop.

It is my pleasure to be co-presenting today with Jenn O’Neil from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s NetSmartz program. Jenn has a wealth of knowledge on cyber safety and is a wonderful resource for parents and educators.

Please note we will be discussing topics that may be sensitive for some individuals. Our intent today is to provide information on safe Internet practices for teens. The information provided in this workshop is meant to provide possible scenarios and behaviors, and not absolutes. Please keep this in mind while reading and/or participating in this workshop.

Thank you,
Cheryl

eBay Workshop: Cyber Safety for Our Children the Series II - Dec 08

Dec 8, 2006 3:59 PM
Hello everyone! I am pleased to be joining Cheryl tonight to talk about cyber safety for our children. I hope families can join us tonight because it is important to have an open conversation. I am a mom to 2 young girls and they are just beginning to show interest in the internet. My job is very rewarding because the mission on NetSmartz Workshop is to empower young people and increase their self-confidence whenever they go online. The internet offers all of us valuable resources and it is a great social outlet to keep in touch with real-life friends. It is the "unknown", so-called online friends we need to watch out for because they may be who they appear to be and we need to protect our personal information. We may discuss some things tonight you didn't really think about.

An increased number of teens are using the Internet to do what they once did through diaries, phone calls and by hanging out with each other. Namely, teens are bonding with classmates, seeking new friends, venting, testing social limits and finding support through Internet communication avenues, like blogs.

Almost one in eight youth ages 8-18 discovered that someone they were communicating with online was an adult pretending to be much younger

31% of 7th- to 12th-graders pretended to be older to get onto a website

Nearly one-third (31%) of 8- to 18-year-olds have a computer in their bedroom, and one in five (20%) have an Internet connection there

A study by the NOP Research Group found that of the four million children aged seven to 17 who surf the net, 29% percent would freely give out their home address and 14% would freely give out their e-mail address if asked.

eBay Workshop: Cyber Safety for Our Children the Series II - Dec 08

Dec 8, 2006 4:04 PM
According to Online Victimization of Youth: Five Years Later, a follow-up to the 1999 study of youth ages 10 to 17 to document their use of the Internet and online experiences,
The number of children who reported an unwanted exposure to explicit pictures increased from 1 in 4 to 1 in 3
Children receiving an unwanted solicitation or approach decreased from 1 in 5 to 1 in 7
Children threatened or harassed increased from 6% to 9%
Aggressive solicitations (from someone who asked to meet them somewhere; called them on the telephone; sent them regular mail, money, or gifts) did not decline

Teen and preteens can also be making threatening, harassing, or inappropriate comments on the Internet.

Nine percent of youth online are harassed. Online harassment can be very disturbing for children because it is often their peers who are harassing them. Many harassment incidents began with a confrontation at school.

15% of solicitors that requested photographs from teens sent photographs or videos of themselves via a webcam

About 12% of the youth who encountered a solicitation or approach told a parent. Only 5% of solicitations were reported to authorities such as a law- enforcement agency, an Internet Service Provider, or a hotline.

eBay Workshop: Cyber Safety for Our Children the Series II - Dec 08

Hello everyone!

I am pleased to be a part of the 2nd in this series for Cyber Safety for our children. I attended the first one and there was a lot of great info put out in that one!

I hope that many will attend this one and learn a lot as far as safety in cyber space for our kids.

My son recently started getting into the VMK games on Disney and I think being aware of any potential hazards out there will arm parents much better with knowledge to protect our kids while they are online.

I am the leader of eBay's first group for Amber Alerts. Come on by and check it out when you get a chance. We will be adding a link back to this workshop so others may use it for future reference. We also have a link there for the first workshop. :)

Here is the link to join the eBay Amber Alert Group:

I am Looking forward to learning more and meeting everyone here! :)
