Thank you so much for joining us! My name is Kristin Cunningham – I am in the Product Marketing organization at eBay and manage the eBay Giving Works program.

You have all shown such generosity in this very challenging time of need (and always)… those in the Southeast United States and all over our nation who have been impacted by Hurricane Katrina are incredibly deserving of our care and support right now.

eBay Workshop: eBay Giving Works - Help Make a Difference - Sept 8th

Sep 8, 2005 10:02 AM
You may have seen the Announcement Board post on September 1st which said:

We at eBay are saddened by the continued damage to the Southeast United States as a result of Hurricane Katrina. As rescue efforts continue, we want to make it as easy as possible for the eBay Community to help.

We’ve set up several ways for you to donate funds to the relief efforts. You can buy or list items to support a relief organization with eBay Giving Works (Link). A section of the eBay home page has been dedicated to relief efforts and information, and contains a link to our donation page (Link) on PayPal so that you can make a direct contribution to the United Way. You can also visit the Natural Disaster & Relief Information discussion board (Link).

In addition, the eBay Foundation is making a $250,000 donation to the American Red Cross on behalf of the eBay Community.

Please also keep in mind that many people have been displaced by this disaster, and others may not be able to access their computers or ship or receive items. We encourage you to be patient and to keep trying to communicate with any transaction partners in the affected areas. Additionally, both the U.S. Postal Service and United Parcel Service have posted information about their services to the affected areas on their respective websites. You can find the USPS information here (Link) and the UPS information here (Link).

            Sincerely,

              Rachel Makool
              Director, Community Development

eBay Workshop: eBay Giving Works - Help Make a Difference - Sept 8th

Sep 8, 2005 10:03 AM
I’d like to assure you that eBay Inc. is actively investigating additional ways to contribute to relief efforts… please stay tuned.

In the meantime, I’d like to use this hour to chat with you about eBay Giving Works, the dedicated program for charity listings on eBay and one of the ways you can provide financial assistance to those in need.

In this workshop, we will give a general overview including key features and benefits and detail about how the process works for sellers. We also hope to make clear our relationship with MissionFish, the nonprofit organization that powers the eBay Giving Works program (in fact, a MissionFish representative has also joined us). And we will absolutely take any and all questions you might have at the end of the presentation. I’m going to try to speed through this content so we can get to your questions as I often find this can be the most valuable part of a workshop…

eBay Workshop: eBay Giving Works - Help Make a Difference - Sept 8th

Sep 8, 2005 10:03 AM
Program Overview & Key Benefits

eBay Giving Works enables you to list items on eBay and donate part of or the entire final sale price to your favorite nonprofit organizations (including many Hurricane Katrina relief organizations). Your listings stand out in the eBay Marketplace with a charity icon (blue and yellow ribbon) and will also be included in specialized charity search engines. Buyers are often more willing to purchase and even pay more for items that benefit a cause – with this enhanced visibility, we find that on average eBay Giving Works listings tend to attract more bids, sell more often and at higher prices.

After you make a donation from the sale of your item, you will receive a tax receipt for your gift. Additionally, your listing will qualify for the eBay Giving Works Fee Donation Policy if you donate 100% of the final sale price and the item sells (we’ll cover this in more detail in a moment).

In general, you (and your buyers) can feel confident the nonprofit you are supporting with your sale is certified to be a legitimate organization and funds will in fact reach the intended destination.

Did you know?
Since 2000, more than $54 million has been raised for charity from listings sold on eBay worldwide!

Things to Know

There are a few things you should know before you create an eBay Giving Works listing:

  • You have the flexibility to donate 10-100% of your final sale price – if the items sells, a $10 minimum donation is required per transaction (we know many sellers would prefer a lower threshold and this is something we are working toward).

  • Nonprofits have the right to request the cancellation of a listing if they prefer not to be associated with the item (this is actually a legal requirement).

  • If you do not find your favorite nonprofit in the directory, they can recommend they join for free. Link (there are currently over 6,000 organizations in the nonprofit directory and 38 Hurricane Katrina relief organizations featured at Link)

  • To create an eBay Giving Works listing, your browser must be JavaScript enabled.

  • The first time you create an eBay Giving Works listing, you must register with MissionFish and place a credit card on file with them (this is used to collect your donations).

  • You must select PayPal or a credit card as one of the buyer payment options; however, this is not required for listings in the Motors or Real Estate categories.

  • eBay Giving Works listings may not be created in the Real Estate ad format or Mature Audiences category.

  • If there are nonprofits in our audience planning to sell on your own behalf (what we call Direct Selling), please note that some of what I’m going to cover works a little differently for you – see Link for more information.

    Processing the Donation

At the close of a successful transaction, you should receive payment from your buyer as usual. MissionFish will send you an email notification that includes the exact donation amount due and payment instructions. You can then proactively go into your My MissionFish account and pay for the donation via credit card – if you have not done this by the second Monday after the close of your listing, MissionFish will charge the credit card you put on file when you registered with them. MissionFish forwards your gift to your designated nonprofit (this happens on the 20th of the second month after the close of your listing) and provides you with a tax receipt.

Note: Donations are collected only on successful (sold) listings. There is also a process to request a refund of your donation refund should you have an Unpaid Item or if you decide to issue your buyer a refund for whatever reason – you can opt out of this if you’d like for your donation to be forwarded to the nonprofit more quickly.
