Good afternoon! Welcome to this months eBay Marketplace Research workshop. Today John Bodine and Nick Donelson will be discussing how you can leverage eBay Marketplace Research to Build more effective Titles
We have prepared several posts in advance which will help illustrate the main points of the topic but will also be answering questions you might have and providing recommendations based on your questions!
It might also be useful to look at the previous workshop hosted by Terapeak on creating effective titles, that workshop can be found here.
Before we begin, I should mention that all of the data used in today’s workshop was obtained by using eBay Marketplace Research. If you are not familiar with the product you can click the link to find out more about eBay Marketplace Research.

Why should I be so concerned about my title?
When buyers look for products on eBay, many begin with a search. The default search on eBay only searches within the title of an item and will not return items that include the search terms in the description. In order for a buyer to find your item, the first step is getting the item to show up in the search results.
The function of the most effective titles is threefold.
- Help a buyer find your item through search
- Provide more information about the item
- Draw attention to the listing – a merchandising function
Later we will talk about each of these three functions and how you can create effective and compelling titles, but first let’s talk about a few things you should know and avoid when building a title.

Why don’t I just include lots of words in my title?
A title can only contain 55 characters, precious real estate by any standard. The most successful sellers recognize that a good title will improve sales and enable buyers to find your items quickly and efficiently. With these 55 characters we want to do our best to achieve the three objectives outlined above. It is important to use those 55 characters wisely, only adding extra words after you have accomplished the main goal.

Search manipulation is a no-no
When building your title, remember that search manipulation is a violation of the eBay listing policy and will likely result in the listing being pulled from the site.
Search manipulation is anything that involves using unrelated words to attract people searching for those items to your listing. For example, if you are selling an ACME television set it would not be appropriate to include the brand names of other televisions in the title or description.

Helping the Finding Experience
As mentioned above, the first thing a title must do is help buyers find your item. The key here is to think like a buyer. If you were to type one or two words to find your item what would they be?
For example, if you were looking to purchase a digital camera what would you first type in the search box? “digital camera” “casio exilim” “canon powershot”?
eBay Marketplace Research helps you understand buyer behavior with the Top Searches module. This part of eBay Marketplace Research provides information on up to 20 top searches for any category and will also help you understand how buyers might narrow their search through subsequent search terms.
Here you see that when buyers are in the Cameras & Photo Category the top search terms are “digital camera”, “nikon”, “canon”, and “sony”. It is therefore very important to include both the specific brand and the more generic fact that is it a digital camera in the title. Further down in the list you can see that some buyers type “sony digital camera” as the full search term but this behavior is less common than just “digital camera” or the brand.
If we happen to be selling a Casio Exilim camera we can also use eBay Marketplace Research to better understand the words buyers use when they have also used the word Casio. To do this, we type the word “Casio” in the Keyword(s) box and click
As you can see, buyers looking for a Casio camera are most likely to include the words “exilim, ex-s500, digital camera, ex s600, z50”. Note that in some cases the buyers include a dash in the model and in the case of the EX S600 the dash was not included. Experiment with your title, including one or the other to find which title works best.

Drawing Attention
The title can also be used as a merchandising tool, drawing the buyer’s eye to your item in the list of returned items. The most common way to draw attention is to play around with the case. For example, adding the word NEW in all caps or including various punctuation as a form of decoration or eye-catching pattern. Other examples include using a series of *’s to begin and end the title or using @’s in place of the letter “o” in the word “look”. Play around with different titles to see what works best for you.

Hi gwhk, Including an asterisk in your title won't necessarily help the search. In fact, an asterisk is used as one of our advanced search commands to help buyers find more items. Searching for "book*" returns items whose titles contain words starting with book, such as books, bookshelf, and bookmark

In the Casio Exilim example we’ve been looking at the listings which fetched the highest price were the following.
As you can see, this seller included the brand, the model in caps, the model number, color, accessories, condition, and information about how they treat their customers. All that in 55 characters!
While there are certainly other factors which will determine the final price one gets for an item, we hope the items discussed will help you become better sellers.

Best Practices
Plurals
The eBay search engine does not always automatically expand or narrow the results to include titles that include plurals. If you are selling an item that might commonly be referred to in the singular or plural it would be wise to include both in the title. For example, if you sell casino dice you might include both the word “dice” and the word “die”.
Punctuation
As with plurals, it may be important to include variations of punctuation in your title.
Spelling
Be sure the words in your title are spelled correctly! Misspellings in a title are known to result in lower selling prices, fewer bids, and lower conversion. In fact, there are products that help buyers find great deals by looking for common misspellings!
One thing to consider regarding the spelling of a word is any internationally difference in spelling. For example, the word “color” can also be spelled “colour”. You may wish to include both spellings if you intend to sell the item to a UK buyer.

Hi Reliantonlineservices, Currently eBay Marketplace Research does not show historical performance of keywords or how the popularity of those keywords change over time. We are looking at possibly including a "billboard top 100" type functionality within eBay Marketplace Research to show how a keyword moves over time. Great question! johnb

I receive occasionally Hot Lists giving me Keyword lists that are from Ebay that show Categories what are hot and demand exceeds supply. Are they created by eBay Marketplace Research?

Thank you for taking the time to speak to us today. I was wondering which title you would recommend out of the following two: 1 - Luggage Upright Tote Suitcase Bags Set. (In this case there are just words that mean the same but might be used in a search) or 2 - 2pc 14" Upright 10" Tote Luggage Set. Great question Tracey, Good words to include to make your item more relevant would include bag, piece, suitcase, carry, travel, wheeled, Carry-ons, expandable, upright, tote. I would use one or more of these and also include some information about the specific bag such as the size, color, # pieces. johnb

As you can see, buyers include both the brand and the item when they are searching for luggage. Additionally, they use terms such as "carry on" and "garment bag".

How about GENUINE AMERICAN OAK Wood Baby/Pet/Dog Safety Gate? I am having a hard time selling the oak wood baby gate I have in stock. I did not some research using completed listings. The price of available gates were high (at least $65.00) but the sucessful listing rate is low. I am currently selling mine for $35.00 (start bidding at $19.00). There is still no bid/buyer!

Hi reliantonlineservices, Hot List is based on which categories are increasing or decreasing in total sales or listed items and is a different source of data. eBay Marketplace Research does is not based on Hot List and Hot List does not use the same backend as eBay Marketplace Research. Hot List is a great tool to find what categories are experiencing sales growth. johnb

Hi Chairmanial, Common search words associated with a safety gate include: 1. baby safety gate 2. baby gate 3. pet gate 4. play yard 5. safety gates As you can see, dog gate doesn't make the list. But this shows you that people are searching for these as a string, therefore you should include the words "baby gate" together and "pet gate" together. This will help your item show up more frequently in search results. johnb
