eBay Workshop: Fight Identity Theft! - Feb 09

Feb 9, 2007 10:58 AM
Hi Everyone,

My name is Larry and I manage PayPal T&S marketing. On behalf of PayPal, eBay and the Federal Trade Commission, I’d like to welcome you to today’s workshop. We’re joined by several people including Mike Vergara who runs PayPal Account Protections, Jeff Chen, who manages eBay’s Account Protection and several other PayPal and eBay staffers. We’re particularly pleased to have with us today, Karen, Lisa and Carol from the FTC. Before getting to your questions, I’m going to post a few messages from FTC.

● Don't reply to email or pop-up messages that ask for personal or financial information, and don't click on links in the message. Don't cut and paste a link from the message into your Web browser - phishers can make links look like they go one place, but that actually send you to a different site.

● If you need to reach an organization you do business with, call the number on your financial statements or on the back of your credit card, or type in the web address yourself. Some scammers send an email that appears to be from a legitimate business and ask you to call a phone number to update your account or access a "refund." Because they use Voice over Internet Protocol technology, the area code you call does not reflect where the scammers really are.

● Use anti-virus and anti-spyware software, as well as a firewall, and update them all regularly.

● Don't email personal or financial information.

● Review credit card and bank account statements as soon as you receive them to check for unauthorized charges.

● Be cautious about opening any attachment or downloading any files from emails you receive, regardless of who sent them.

● Forward spam that is phishing for information to spam@uce.gov and to the company, bank, or organization impersonated in the phishing email. You also may report phishing email to reportphishing@antiphishing.org. The Anti-Phishing Working Group, a consortium of ISPs, security vendors, financial institutions and law enforcement agencies, uses these reports to fight phishing. If you've been scammed, visit the Federal Trade Commission's Identity Theft website at www.consumer.gov/idtheft.

Why does PayPal add links in emails?

Link

Example above. There is even a link to download a program! How do members know the email is real? Even the scam emails have the members real name on them now.

Ban the link please! All links.

My Messages for PayPal was said to be on the roadmap at the eBay Live 2004 conference, where is it?

Thanks!

Also, I want to mention that the very first email the member receives from PayPal after signing up has a link in it that they have to click, I think that teaches members right off the bat that it's ok to click them.

Hi all,

I am wondering: since the phishers are getting more and more sophisticated, wouldn't it be a good idea for PayPal and eBay to stop incorporating ANY links in marketing and other eMails ?

Links in eMails are on the top of list when it comes to account hijackings ?

Thanks,

Birgit

Why does PayPal continue to put hyperlinks in emails sent to users?

If PayPal encouraged users to go to the PayPal site directly it would help increase security.

Why does PayPal have ads in those same emails that also have hyperlinks?

What do you consider to be the number one source leading to identity theft on eBay?

Phishing emails or the listing re-directs to fake sign-in pages?

I'm concerned about the "Question for item" and the "respond now" link.
I personally never use it and if I have to respond in my messaged I log into my messages manually and respond.

But wouldn't it just be safer to remove that link all together since the scammers use this format quite often to harvest information ?
Thanks !
