eBay Workshop: Giving Works Turbo Lister - November 1st

Nov 1, 2005 2:02 PM
Thank you so much for joining us! My name is Kristin Cunningham – I am in the Product Marketing organization at eBay and manage the eBay Giving Works program.

As many of you may know, eBay Giving Works, powered by MissionFish, offers you the opportunity to sell items on the site, and then automatically donate part or all of your final sale price to one of the certified organizations in the nonprofit directory. Since 2000, you, the eBay Community, have raised well over $54 million for charity from listings sold on eBay worldwide, and your generosity was once again on display in the overwhelming support we saw for victims of the recent hurricanes.

I am pleased to announce that eBay Giving Works is now offered in Turbo Lister, so you can list items to support your favorite nonprofits even more quickly and easily. We will take the next hour to share information about eBay Giving Works, discuss how to create an eBay Giving Works listing using Turbo Lister, and answer any questions you may have.

Of course, you can also use the Sell Your Item form to create eBay Giving Works listings, but we will not be going into detail on this process during this workshop. And, please note, eBay Giving Works is also available in the API – if your favorite tool or application does not include eBay Giving Works, please contact the provider to let them know of your interest.

Let’s begin…

Program Overview & Key Benefits

As I mentioned, eBay Giving Works enables you to list items on eBay and donate part or all of the final sale price to your favorite nonprofit organizations. Your listings stand out in the eBay Marketplace with a charity icon (blue and yellow ribbon) and will also be included in specialized charity search engines (in addition to the main eBay search engine). Buyers are often more willing to purchase and even pay more for items that benefit a cause – with this enhanced visibility, we find that on average eBay Giving Works listings tend to attract more bids, sell more often and at higher prices.

After you make a donation from the sale of your item, you will receive a tax receipt for your gift. Additionally, your listing will qualify for the eBay Giving Works Fee Donation Policy if you donate at least 90% of the final sale price and the item sells (we’ll cover this in more detail in a moment).

In general, you (and your buyers) can feel confident the nonprofit you are supporting with your sale is certified to be a legitimate organization and funds will in fact reach the intended destination.

The MissionFish Role

Many people ask about MissionFish and their role in offering the eBay Giving Works program…. I think the best way to think about MissionFish is that they power the charity or fundraising aspects of selling on eBay:

  • First, they manage the nonprofit directory and verify that every organization participating in the program meets program guidelines.

  • Second, they process donations and provide tax receipts.

  • Third, they ensure that every eBay Giving Works listing is marked with the MissionFish seal of approval to instill buyer confidence and trust.

    Things to Know

There are a few things you should know before you create an eBay Giving Works listing:

  • You have the flexibility to donate 10-100% of your final sale price – if the items sells, a $10 minimum donation is required per listing (we know many sellers would prefer a lower threshold and this is something we are working toward).

  • Nonprofits have the right to request the cancellation of a listing if they prefer not to be associated with the item (this is actually a legal requirement).

  • If you do not find your favorite nonprofit in the directory, you can recommend they join for free. Link (there are currently over 6,700 organizations in the nonprofit directory)

  • Before you create an eBay Giving Works listing with Turbo Lister, you must complete a one-time only MissionFish registration process and agree to let eBay share some basic transaction data with MissionFish. As part of this process, MissionFish will ask you to place a credit card on file (this is used to collect your donations).

  • You must select PayPal or a credit card as one of the buyer payment options; however, this is not required for listings in the Motors or Real Estate categories.

  • eBay Giving Works listings may not be created in the Real Estate ad format or Mature Audiences category.

  • If there are nonprofits in our audience planning to sell on your own behalf (what we call Direct Selling), please note that some of what I’m covering works a bit differently for you – see Link for more information.

How to Create an eBay Giving Works Listing using Turbo Lister

After you download the latest version of Turbo Lister, look in the Format Specifics section – here you’ll see a new field for Donate Percentage of Sale. Click the Change button, and then select a nonprofit and the percentage of the item’s final sale price you would like to donate.

(My apologies... we were trying to get slightly better screenshots for you with big red circles to call out important areas but they weren't ready in time - hopefully this will still be helpful :))

Once you have selected a charity, you will need to designate a percentage of your final sale price to donate (10%-100%, subject to a $10 minimum if the item sells).

After selecting a charity and donation percentage, you will complete the remainder of your listing information as usual. Submit your listing and manage the sale as you normally would.
