eBay Workshop: How to Buy More Safely Online - Dec 05

Hi, my name is Larry and I run Trust and Safety Marketing for PayPal. In addition to welcoming colleagues from eBay Trust & Safety and our own PayPal Trust & Safety team, we’re especially excited to have representatives from the Federal Trade Commission with us for this eBay Workshop focused on buying safely – particularly important as many of you are working on your holiday shopping lists and shopping online. We have a lot to cover today and want to get to your questions. But first, let me provide a framework for how we look at consumer security and then let me share with you a few simple tips:

Buying safely online has four essential elements: 1) account protection, 2) email protection and 3) browser safety and 4) computer protection.

To help protect your account, start with a secure password that uses a combination of letters, numbers and symbols. If you’re using simple passwords like your name, the word “password” or sequential numbers like12345678, you might want to change them immediately.

To increase email safety, make sure not to click on links in emails that ask for personal information. If you’re not sure if an email purporting to be from PayPal is fake, forward the entire email to spoof@paypal.com (for suspected eBay fake emails, forward them to spoof@ebay.com). Same goes for purported eBay emails… just forward to spof@ebay.com. Within 24 hours, we’ll let you know if it’s legitimate.

PayPal also encourages our users to take the Fight Phishing Challenge (www.paypal.com/fightphishing) in the PayPal Security Center. Test your knowledge of phishing by answering five questions. It’s fun, informative and interactive. Don’t worry if you don’t get all five questions right the first time. Just keep taking it until you do! When you’re done, forward the Figth Phishing Challenge to friends and family. The Fight Phishing section also offers information on what you can do to protect yourself and what PayPal is doing to help fight phishing.

To help safeguard your browser…Upgrade Your Browser. Upgrade your browser to one with anti-phishing features. It’ll take a few minutes and you’ll be protected with the most up to date security available. The chances of your wandering onto a fake web site will be reduced

After you’ve downloaded the new browser, in some cases, you will need to activate the anti-phishing features yourself. In Internet Explorer 7 (IE7), for example, click on the Tools icon in the upper right, scroll down to Phishing Filter and click on Turn on automatic web site checking. Here's the link to upgrade your Internet Explorer browser: Link

Finally, to increase computer protection, make sure you’ve installed the latest version of anti-virus protection from established companies like McAfee and Symantec. These applications can scan your computer for viruses, worms and trojans – many of which are designed to steal your identity.

From an eBay perspective, here are some additional quick tips:

Before bidding on an item it’s always a good idea to :
• review the seller’s feedback and comments from other buyers about the seller.
• make sure to read the listing very carefully and check out the seller’s terms of sale and return policy
• when you have questions or concerns, be sure to reach out directly to the seller. eBay provides you with the ability to contact the seller if you have questions. Learn more: Link

After winning an item, make sure you use safe form of payment, like PayPal. NEVER use Western Union, MOneyGram or other instant cash services. Why?
• When you send money through one of these services, you can't confirm who picks up the cash. Once you send the money, you won't be able to get it back - you won't even know who got it!
• Western Union and MoneyGram both recommend against using their services to pay for online auction-style purchases. To read warnings from these companies, click here: Link.
• eBay prohibits sellers from asking buyers to send payment through Western Union, MoneyGram or other instant cash transfer services. To learn more, click here: Link.
• Note that eBay does not offer protection for payments made through Western Union, MoneyGram or other instant cash transfer services.

Hi everyone,

This is Carol from Federal Trade Commission. While we're talking about phishing, I encourage everyone to check out the phishing quiz at our website onguardonline.gov. The game's called "Phishing Scams: Avoid the Bait." It's an informative and fun way to test your knowledge about phishing and how to not get hooked by one of these scams.

I want to protect myself from Phishing, but shouldn't eBay and paypal be more proactive and protect my email address from getting out to everyone and anyone? When I buy or sell and use paypal, that increases the opportunity for my email address to get in the hands of spammers/scammers.

Regarding passwords, we invested in the PayPal Security Key for protection. It works beautifully on PayPal. But on at least two occasions, it has caused our eBay account to freeze and the only way we could get it unfrozen was to contact eBay support via Live Chat. They were able to unlock the security key somehow. We disabled that key on our seller account after the second time it happened. Can anyone comment on that? We would like use it on eBay but can't afford the down time that comes with a freeze up.
Thanks,
Kathryn :)

Hi pebble-beach-golf,

Thanks for your comment and vigilance in protecting your email address. We are actively looking across the eBay and PayPal sites at places where we can reduce email exposure. For example, we've recently removed email addresses from End-Of-Auction notices. However, as you know, email communication is a critical part of a rich trading experience, so we are constantly seeking the right balance between security and user experience.

Best,
Bobby
