Top Searches

We’ll begin today by talking about the Top Searches module of eBay Marketplace Research.

Top Searches is accessed by clicking “Top Searches” in the left navigation pane. You will immediately see the top search information for searches done from the home page. Top Searches is useful for the following:

  • Gauge the demand interest for a product you might buy or sell

  • Gain insight into the words buyers are using to find products

  • See searches for a product or keyword

  • Understand search words unique to a category

By using the Category Menu you can easily navigate to a category you buy or sell in and view the top searches for that category. Entering a keyword into the Keyword(s) box will show you the top related searches for the keyword you entered. For example, entering “xbox” might return “xbox console” as the top related search. This tells you that users searching for “xbox” are also searching for “xbox console” and that it might be beneficial to include the word console in your title.

The data is currently updated at least weekly and we plan to update the information daily in a future update.

Conducting a query

The heart of eBay Marketplace Research is the Charts and Metrics. You can begin your research from the either the Summary page or the Charts and Metrics page. Type a Keyword(s) into the box and click “Run Research”. In our example we will type “xbox 360 console” and analyze the results.

Charts

The initial data you will see returned to you is a partial list of the categories containing the items returned, followed by a trend chart showing Completed Item Average Sold Price for the past 2 weeks.

At the top of the chart you will see two tabs, one for Completed Items, and one for displaying information about Active items. The data displayed can be controlled by selecting the tab for the data you are interested in viewing.

The amount of data displayed is controlled by the Time Period menu just above the chart. Depending on the tier you have subscribed to, data can be displayed for 1 day, 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, and 3 months. This filter will also control how far back the search will look. If you find no items returned for a 2 week period you might try changing the Time Period to capture a wider range of data.

Further to the right, we see a Show: menu which controls the type of information displayed in the bar graph. Several options are available based on subscription tier.

  • Trend: Average Number of Bids/Item

  • Trend: Average Sold Price

  • Trend: Number of Items Sold

  • Trend: Number of Completed Items

  • Distribution: Average Starting Price

  • Distribution: Number of Items Sold

The chart is an active area, hovering the mouse cursor over a bar will tell you the value of that metric, clicking on any bar will take you to a list of those items that completed on that hour, day or week.

Charts continued

Next we see a small icon of the graph, this controls menu for the second Y axis and selecting an option from this list will plot a line on top of the bar graph. The options for this second axis include:

  • Trend: Average Sold Price

  • Trend: Number of Items Sold

  • Trend: Number of Completed Items

  • Trend: Average Number of Bids/Item

Once again, the chart is an active area. Hovering your mouse cursor over the red dot will show you the underlying metric, for example, the number of items sold for that hour, day, or week.

The data is updated in near real-time. If you refresh the search after additional items have closed, the metrics and charts will change to reflect the new data available.

Metrics

Further down the page you will find a table of metrics for Completed Auction and Fixed Price items and Store Inventory Format items.

Below each of the metrics section you will find a link to view the items responsible for the data in that particular section, for example, clicking on “View all Auction and Fixed Price listings…” will return a list of those items.

Filters

There are a number of ways to filter the data returned by a query, narrowing the search to get just the right set of items you want to see charts and metrics for. Today we will talk about filtering by the following:

  • Category

  • Excluding words

  • Item price

  • Number of bids

In addition to the filters we will discuss, filters are available for the following:

  • Multiple item listings

  • Listing Features

  • Formats

  • Specific Sellers

  • Specific Stores

  • Location

  • Distance

  • Currency

Filter by Category

The first is to narrow the search to a particular category. This can be done by selecting a category from the Category menu, clicking on a category in the list of categories containing items returned by the query, or clicking the “more/multiple…” link and selecting one or more categories.

Filtering by category can help remove the ‘noise’ you might see as a result of the query returning accessories or tangentially related items listed in other categories. The product allows you to click down to the lowest level categories and when Item Specific attributes are available you will have the opportunity to select and filter by item specifics.

Excluding Words

Clicking on the “Exclude words…” link will bring up the Filters window and allow you to enter words for items you would like to exclude. For example, if you exclude the word “coupon” no listings with that word in the title will be used to create the charts and calculate the metrics.

Item Price

Another great way to narrow the found set is to filter by price range. If you look at the metrics returned by the “xbox 360 console” query you will see that the sold price range is as great as $18,000. For example, filter the list to show only items sold between $300 and $700.

Number of Bids

It might be useful to view only data for items that received bids. The “Number of bids” filter will allow you to specify a minimum, maximum, or range of bids and will then narrow the results to only items with bidding activity.
