eBay Workshop: Overview of eBay Desktop - Dec 18

Dec 18, 2007 9:21 AM
What is eBay Desktop?

eBay Desktop is an application that runs on your PC or Mac. You can use it instead of using eBay through your web browser for many of your everyday eBay activities such as browsing. You can download it from Link

eBay Desktop provides an alternative interface to the website, and it offers some unique features that aren’t available on the website, like a history of viewed items, popup alerts, and “feeds.” Some users will prefer to use eBay Desktop, and some will prefer to keep using the website. eBay Desktop is free, so there is no risk to try it out.

Currently, eBay Desktop is in “Public Beta”, which means that although the product is not finished, anyone can try it out and many will find it useful even though it is incomplete. Please use the “Submit a Bug Report or Feature Request” button near the bottom of the application to let us know what you think of it.

I’m a seller, why should I use eBay Desktop?

The current version of eBay Desktop is focused on features for buyers, not sellers. We may add more features for sellers in the future, but for now there are many other selling tools that you can use, such as TurboLister. Of course you can use eBay Desktop for your buying activity if you choose.

Do I need any additional software to run it?

eBay Desktop requires the Adobe AIR software from Adobe. When you install eBay Desktop, Adobe AIR is installed as well if you don’t already have it on your computer.

Tips for Using eBay Desktop Effectively:

- When you do a search, the related keywords area near the top displays additional keywords that can help you narrow your search. Click the “+” icon to add that words to your search, or click the “-“ icon to remove it from your search. Try it out with this example search: “ipod”, then click “+” next to the word “nano” and then click “-“ next to some of the other accessory related keywords that may appear such as “case” or “charger”

- Use the Notes feature to add a note to an item, such as to help you remember what about a particular item you liked. The Notes area under My Items displays all items that have notes attached.

- The Recent Items area under My Items shows a chronological list of all the items you have viewed using eBay Desktop. This is especially useful when you view an item but forget to add it to the watch list. You can check your Recent Items list to see what you have viewed, in reverse chronological order. If you want an item removed from the Recent Items list, simply click the red “X” icon on the item.

- The Feeds feature lets you sift through items that match your favorite searches – delete an item that you don’t want to see any more by clicking the “X” icon next to the item thumbnail image

Argh! No questions?! You're forcing us to do the unthinkable...sit and talk amongst ourselves.

This calls for more eggnog...

Just FYI - I do read every comment that comes through the bug report / feature request tool. By far the biggest feature request is for selling features, so we are taking that suggestion seriously, although I don't have anything to report yet.

We'll be releasing a new version very soon, too.
