What is Skype for Business?

At Skype we noticed that many of our users where small businesses we asked them what we can do to make it even easier for them to use Skype. The typical users are small companies and specific project team inside larger corporations, often working internationally. We like to think of Skype for Business as a solution for small companies that act big!

Skype for Business uses the same client as consumer Skype, because it has a lot of functionality useful in a business environment, I will talk about some of them later. What we have added is new website called Skype.biz and a admin tool call the Skype Control panel.

Skype for Business Control panel
The control panel is a nice tool that will help you organize the different Skype accounts in your company. We’ve developed this tool for the person in your company in charge of the money. Now you don’t have to fiddle around with credit cards and payments; instead the administrator can allocate Skype Credit, SkypeIn numbers and Skype Voicemail to all people in your company. You can also select auto top-up, so you never run out of Skype credits again. And it’s easy to print invoices for your purchases and to see when you have given credits to whom.

SkypeOut
A cheap way to make calls from Skype to people using traditional phones and mobiles. No line rental, no contract fees.
You can call regular phones all across the world at local rates from your computer with SkypeOut. SkypeOut is a cheap way to call out from Skype to landlines and mobile phones. Users are charged an inexpensive per minute rate for their SkypeOut calls.
With Skype, you get a straight price per minute rate to call wherever your colleagues or business partners are. The rate doesn’t change for weekends, Mondays after 8 PM, weekdays from 9 to 5 or anything like that… it stays the same.

We’ve even come up with one rate for the 30 most popular call destinations: the SkypeOut Global Rate. It’s currently 1.7 Euro Cent (that would be around 2 US cents) per minute to more than 30 countries.
You can also use SkypeOut when you're on the move, to forward your Skype calls to any phone so you never miss a call.

SkypeIn
With SkypeIn, you can get your own, regular phone number. So if people who aren’t using Skype yet want to call you by dialing a regular number, you can still receive the call in Skype. No matter where in the world you are.

So if your office is in San Jose, but you have customer in England, just get a SkypeIn number there and your customers can dial your SkypeIn number, and your Skype on the other side of the world starts ringing... and your customers are only paying whatever their phone company charges them for making a local phone call in UK.

You can have up to 10 SkypeIn numbers associated with your Skype account, from as many as different places, so wherever in the world you log on, and using whatever computer, people can always reach you on the same number.

SkypeIn numbers are sold on a subscription basis - a 12 month subscription is € 30 (about $37 US dollars) and 3 months is € 10 (about $12.50). To make it even better, SkypeIn comes with a free Skype Voicemail subscription, so you won’t miss a call.

Conference Calls

Did you know you can make free conference calls with Skype? It’s really useful when you want to discuss something with your co-workers and you can’t get them all in a room. You can conference call with up to 5 people at the same time, including those you call with SkypeOut.

Multi-chats
Another easy way to keep a group working together is by using multi-chat. Did you know that you can also bookmark a chat? You do that by pressing the blue pin in the top right corner of the Skype chat window. Now you can find the chat using the ‘Tools > Bookmarked Chats’ menu option. It’s a really useful way to keep an open forum for any project you’re working on. And it’s quicker and simpler than emailing.

Call forwarding
Call forwarding is another nice feature that will make your everyday life easier. You can forward the calls you receive on Skype to another Skype name, a landline or a mobile phone. So if you're away from your computer your friends and co-workers can still call you for free on Skype. (And you just pay the SkypeOut rate for the call, which is pretty cheap, actually.) You find you call forwarding settings in the tools menu, under options.

Skype integration

At Skype we think that all phone numbers you can find in you computer should be clickable, so it not only is cheaper to call with Skype, but also easier and faster. One thing that is really useful is the web toolbars (IE and Firefox) that recognise any phone numbers on the web and turn it into a call button. Try it out, I promise it is a “aha” experience. A plus is if you have your company phone directory on your intranet, very easy to just find a number and click to call it.
Check it out

Our Outlook toolbar does the same magic to Outlook and also a whole range of other cool features. Give it a try

There are also many business applications that have integrated with Skype, one example is Salesforce.com, who have a Skype plug-in to their CRM system.

If you are just a little bit techy, you could actually integrate Skype into your own web page or application. See these links for info.
