Hi Everyone,

Welcome to today’s workshop on the importance of having a return policy. We are hosting this workshop in order to discuss some of the changes recently made in the Return Policy section in Sell Your Item. In addition, we also want to share with you some of the benefits sellers have seen in clearly stating their return policies to buyers.

Why did eBay create a separate Return Policy section in SYI?

In 2003, eBay changed the Payment Instructions box in SYI to include a space for sellers to state their return policies. However, we heard from both buyers and sellers that this change did not meet their needs. Sellers felt that their return policies got overlooked because it was buried in the payment instructions box. Buyers also told us that it was hard to discover if a seller had a return policy.

Beyond this, we also know that return policies are a significant boon to building buyer confidence. As the eBay Marketplace heads into holiday season, we wanted to make sure that sellers had the tools they need….

How did eBay decide on the new design of the Return Policy section?

eBay worked closely with the community to create a solution that balanced the need of both sellers and buyers. We agreed on implementing only a few fields: (1) whether a seller accepts returns; (2) the time period for returning items; (3) the type of refund offered to the buyer; and (4) any additional details about the return policy. We also created a design that that ensured that adoption is optional…..this feature is purely voluntary and sellers who choose to not participate will not be penalized.

Is the Return Policy feature available in all categories?

Yes. Return policies are something that help all sellers, and we hope it is adopted throughout the marketplace.

Will I be required to have a return policy in my listings?

No. Stating a return policy is not required, but we believe that sellers that choose to adopt a return policy will be at a competitive advantage. Clearly stating a return policy helps build buyer confidence and can increase selling success.

What are the benefits to having a return policy?

The clear benefit is increased selling success. In fact, when we researched this, we found that sellers who clearly spell out their return policies, generally have an edge on the competition (on average they have a 6% increase in successful listings). Additionally, this increase is with only a minimal of returns.

If I use a return policy, won’t my number of returns dramatically increase?

Our research has indicated that returns will not dramatically increase. Remember, as a seller, you can state the terms you will accept for buyers to return items. By providing a return policy, we believe this increases the transparency between buyers and sellers. And when there is a greater level of transparency between buyers and sellers, both will be more successful on eBay.

In the drop-down box titled, “Item must be returned within”, eBay allows sellers to select 3, 7, 14 or 30 days. Is that the time from which sellers ship the item, or the time from which a buyer receives an item?

The time is from when a buyer receives an item. In early 2005, we will be educating buyers on the new Return Policy section. We will be sure to include this in our materials. To be safe, you might also want to specify this in the Return Policy text box.

I am a seller. I will only accept returns under two conditions: (1) gross misrepresentation and (2) non-authenticity. If buyers see I accept returns, I don’t want them to start returning items without contacting me first or for simply changing their minds. How can I avoid this?

In the return policy text box, you can specify the conditions you will accept returns. In your case, the buyer must contact the seller first. And you will only accept returns based on gross misrepresentation and non-authenticity.
