eBay Workshop: ‘Tis The Season For Cause Marketing - Nov 09

Nov 9, 2007 10:02 AM

“Cause Marketing” may or may not be a term you are familiar with—but chances are, you’ve seen plenty of examples of it these last few years! How many of you have seen KitchenAid’s pink appliances that benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure? Or perhaps the (Product)Red shirts from the Gap, and phones from Motorola that benefit AIDS research? Or Target’s Do Good program, which benefits local schools?

These are all great examples of companies doing cause marketing right now—in other words, they’re aligning with a cause that’s important to them and their customers, and building trust and loyalty as a result, leading to increased sales and differentiation among their competitors!

So why are companies doing this? More and more, consumers are telling companies that the way they conduct their businesses—how ethical they are, what causes they support—plays a big factor in their purchase decision. According to the recently released 2007 PR Week/Barkley Cause Survey, 72% of consumers say that they have purchased a brand because it supports a cause they believe in.

Is it working? Companies are known for watching the “ROI” (return on investment) with an eagle eye, and with their investment in cause marketing increasing to $1.3B in 2006 according to the IEG Sponsorship Report (that’s up 7.5% from the 2005 spend!), they must be getting good results from their efforts! In fact, according to the PR Week/Barkley Cause Survey mentioned above, companies reported seeing positive PR, an increase in sales/retail traffic, and an enhanced relationship with their target demographic—all a result of their cause marketing efforts!

Can you see similar benefits to your business from incorporating cause marketing into your own business? Absolutely! Many sellers have already started dabbling in cause marketing by using eBay Giving Works (more on this in a bit), and we’ve heard about some of the positive results they’ve seen—including more bids, higher ASP’s, and higher sell-through rates.

You don’t have to be a big brand such as KitchenAid or Target to benefit from cause marketing! Read on to find out how small to medium businesses on eBay can join in.

eBay Workshop: ‘Tis The Season For Cause Marketing - Nov 09

The holidays are just around the corner. And as I’m sure you know, tis the time of year when shopping is on everyone’s minds—which means great opportunities for your business! It’s also the time of year where we all reflect on what we’re grateful for in life and all the different ways we can give back.

For that reason, cause marketing resonates even more during this time of the year, and if you’ve ever considered trying it for your business, there’s no better time than now to get started.

eBay Workshop: ‘Tis The Season For Cause Marketing - Nov 09

Nov 9, 2007 10:04 AM

So how can you do cause marketing on eBay? That’s where eBay Giving Works comes in!

For those who aren’t yet familiar with eBay Giving Works, it is the program presented jointly by eBay and our nonprofit partner, MissionFish, that enables any of you to list an item and earmark 10% to 100% of its final sale price to a nonprofit organization of your choice
It’s that simple!

Each listing that’s created with eBay Giving Works has the distinctive charity ribbon icon—you’ve probably seen it in listings results and the View Item pages for these charity listings. Here’s what it looks like: . This ribbon lets the buyer know that at least 10% of that item’s final sale price is going to a worthy cause—telling them that you are a seller who is committed not only to providing a good shopping experience, but to giving back as well. And that helps you stand out from your competitors!

Need more reasons to give this a try? How about a fee credit? Whenever a listing you created with eBay Giving Works sells, eBay will credit back your Insertion and Final Value Fees—equal to the percentage you donated!

Donated 10% of your item’s final sale price? You’ll get 10% of your basic selling fees back. Donated 50%? You get half of those fees back. How about 100% donation? That’s right, you get ALL of your basic selling fees back! For more information, visit the eBay Giving Works Fee Credit page.

Hi, Jennifer and Ashley. I list at least 20 auctions a day for ebay Giving Works, and cause marketing is a big part of the way I position my business on eBay. Do you have any suggestions for us on how to use ebay Giving Works to boost holiday sales?

Is this something new or is this a program that is available all year round? Can we specify the program we can donate to?

eBay Workshop: ‘Tis The Season For Cause Marketing - Nov 09

Nov 9, 2007 10:07 AM

Ready to get started?

You can list with eBay Giving Works in one of several ways: the Sell-Your-Item form, Turbo Lister, Blackthorne, ChannelAdvisor, Infopia, Vendio, and Kyozou (if you don’t see your listing tool mentioned here, please contact your provider and ask if they support eBay Giving Works functionality!). In this workshop, we’ll be going over how to list with the Sell-Your-Item form, but the process is similar to the other tools as well.

In the SYI form, look for the “eBay Giving Works” section, as shown below—just look for the ribbon, and you can’t miss it!

Next, you’ll need to choose a nonprofit organization—there are over 11,000 certified nonprofits to choose from!—and then select the percentage of your item’s final sale price that you’re committing to donate. (Please note: if your item sells, there is a $5 minimum donation to ensure that the nonprofit gets a meaningful gift)

What happens if the organization you’d like to support isn’t in the list? You can nominate them to get added. Simply fill out the recommend a nonprofit form and we will email the nonprofit to tell them about eBay Giving Works, and give them all the information they need to join. It’s free—and easy—for them to participate!

One thing to note here: if you’ve never listed an item with eBay Giving Works before, you will be prompted at this point to complete a one-time registration (it takes about 5 minutes) with our partner, MissionFish. As we mentioned above, eBay partnered with MissionFish to administer the eBay Giving Works program.

A nonprofit themselves, MissionFish provides the incredibly valuable services of vetting all of the nonprofit organizations that register to participate with eBay Giving Works, as well as making sure every donation that results from an eBay Giving Works listing is safely delivered to the intended nonprofit.

In order for them to ensure the delivery of every donation, MissionFish requires basic information from you, including a credit card where your donation can be charged for your convenience.

eBay Workshop: ‘Tis The Season For Cause Marketing - Nov 09

Those are some great questions! We have a few more pieces of info to share and then we'll be glad to address your questions.

Some things to think about when choosing a nonprofit:

  • What causes are you most passionate about?
  • What causes are your customers passionate about?
  • Does your business have a natural “fit” with a particular cause or organization? For example, if you sell pet supplies, you may want to consider choosing to benefit a pet rescue foundation; if you sell kitchen appliances, consider choosing to benefit a food bank

Need more inspiration? Throughout the year, we rally the Community around various causes to raise money and awareness for organizations doing important work in those areas. For every Spotlight on a Cause theme, we build a special page that features all listings that benefit relevant nonprofits that are dedicated to that cause—and your listing could be one of them!

We’ll be sharing the 2008 Spotlight on a Cause calendar with you very soon, but in the meantime, we’ve got two great causes that we’re highlighting right now:

Spotlight on Children in Need (Link)

    Spotlight on Global Poverty (Link)

and another one coming up November 15th:

    Spotlight on Fighting AIDS (Link)

When you list an item for any of the Spotlight themes above, your listing will automatically be included on the special page!

What comes next after you create your listing? Once that listing ends you do the same things you do after every listing: collect payment from the buyer, ship the item, leave feedback… Now it’s time to fulfill your donation commitment!

MissionFish will send you a reminder about how much you had pledged to donate, and you can either pay that donation now (with credit card or PayPal) by logging into your My MissionFish account, or for your convenience, MissionFish can automatically charge your donation on the method of payment you’ve indicated on the second Monday after your listing ends. MissionFish will provide you a tax receipt for your records, and you can also find this in your my MissionFish account.

And just like that, you’ve helped a worthy cause while making a sale!

    Hi minniealdinger!

eBay Giving Works launched in November 2003, so we've just celebrated our 4th birthday :). It is available all year around, so if there are causes you care about, you certainly don't have to wait until the holidays to support them!

    Hi AfricaDirect,
That's fantastic to hear you're listing eBay Giving Works auctions so frequently! Incorporating cause-marketing to such a degree can absolutely differentiate you in the eBay marketplace.

I have a few thoughts on boosting holiday sales (Jen, feel free to jump in if I'm missing anything)

    1) Get those listings in the Spotlight! We actively drive shoppers there who are looking to support specific causes.
