eBay Workshop: Transitioning from Seller’s Assistant Pro to Blackthorne Pro

May 3, 2006 1:00 PM
Hi, I’m John Slocum. During today’s workshop we’ll first discuss how to migrate your data from Seller’s Assistant Pro to Blackthorne Pro and discuss you how to use some of Blackthorne’s key features. Then, we’ll open up the forum for any questions you may have.

I don't expect that you will be able to follow along real-time with all the steps. I would recommend instead that you get a general idea of what we are discussing and then refer back to this archived workshop when you are actually going through the migration steps. The "Migrating from Seller's Assistant Pro to eBay Blackthorne Pro" guide (Link) will also be invaluable as you work through your migration.

Feel free to ask any questions that relate to the topic we are currently discussing, but if you have unrelated questions I’d like to ask you to hold them til the end of our workshop. We have sellers who joined this workshop primarily to see how to get started with Blackthorne. Thank you!

The first thing I want to mention is that we recently announced an extension to SA Pro support to allow users more time to migrate. We still encourage you to start looking at Blackthorne as soon as possible though. The extension announcement can be found at Link

Before discussing the migration, let me discuss a few advantages of migrating. eB was designed to improve upon on the core functionality of SA. Improvements include:

- sending HTML emails
- editing information directly into the grid view
- better use of screen real estate
- support for up to 12 pictures
- more intuitive interface
- faster data entry using Item Templates and Field Presets
- Better tracking of consignors and better consignment plans
- Filters and folders to help manage items better
- more flexibility in creating Ad Templates
- the ability to view your data by listing format or seller
- supports multiple users with different features allowed for each user
- supports multiple addresses for a single seller
- the ability to have a total row on any grid, or group the rows in a grid on any column
- custom fields
- ... and much more

We're working on finalizing the date now, but I can tell you that you will have plenty of notice and there is no need to worry.

The first step in migrating is to prepare your SA data. To prepare your data, you should:

- Run the SA Pro Database Repair Utility to compact and clean your data.
- Make a backup of your SA Pro database file for archival purposes.
- Remove any records in SA that you don't need anymore.

By preparing your data, you'll get better results from importing.

Next, you will need to download and install eB. You can download it from Link. Once downloaded, you will simply double click the downloaded file to begin the installation, then follow the prompts.

After installation, you're ready to run eB. You can run eB by clicking the "B" icon that was placed on your desktop during the installation.

The first time you run eB, you will be guided through the Setup Assistant. The Setup Assistant will collect data from you and import your SA database. Because eB uses your SA settings and data during the Setup Assistant, you should NOT uninstall SA until you have ported your process over to eB.

The Setup Assistant will let you specify the database to be imported, collect your eBay Userid info, and collect email and picture host server info. It will also let you specify various preferences.

After completing the Setup Assistant, eB will load and display your SA data.

Let's do a brief overview before we start to list our first item.

One of the first things you will notice is that the primary functions are no longer contained on multiple windows. The process of "Creating Items", "Monitoring Listings" and "Finalizing Sales" are now each performed on a different tab on the main screen instead of having their own window.

On the "Create Items" tab, you will enter all the information for the items that you want to list. When you are ready, you will submit the items to create listings. The items on this tab will act as original copies. You can use them over and over to submit multiple listings from a single item. This is very much like the Items window in SA Pro. The major differences are:

- you can organize your items into folders and lists
- filters will allow you to view your items in intelligent ways
- the grid and details panes can be viewed either singly or together on the same screen
- submitting items to eBay is now done primarily from the "Create Items" mode, not the Listings mode as in SA.

Referring back to the repair utility. When I run rejuvenator and repair, all of my sub categories in my SAPro data base are wiped clean. They rever to the original 19 categoies and no sub categories remain.

After the rejuvenator, you should do a refresh of the Store Categories to get your latest categories back.
