eBay Workshop: Using the New Sell Your Item Form - June 28

Jun 28, 2006 3:06 PM
Hello eBay Community, welcome to eBay workshop: Get to Know the New Sell Your Item (SYI) Form. David and Dawson are here to take your questions and comments!

We’ve been working to incorporate your comments and suggestions, and hope to roll out numerous improvements to the form in the next few days and more over the next few weeks as part of our product development schedule. Overall, our goal is to make the new SYI faster and more efficient for both new and experienced sellers.

You can find a link to the new SYI near the top of the page when you click "Sell" in the page header.

eBay Workshop: Using the New Sell Your Item Form - June 28

Jun 28, 2006 3:19 PM
Hi everyone, this is Dawson.

One of the big areas we've been focusing on in the past few weeks is the performance of the new Sell Your Item form. From the tests that we have been performing, sellers have been able to list items 25% faster, on average, with the new Sell Your Item form.

But performance can always be improved, and for some of you it is still a significant pain point. In the next few weeks, we will be rolling out some changes to the site that will make some important performance improvements. The main changes will be:

1. The time to load the "Create Your Listing" page will be reduced

2. Once the "Create Your Listing" page has been loaded, you will be able to immediately interact with the form (no more annoying 2-3 second delay!)

3. We will also be adding some additional indicators so that when the system is busy or waiting for a response from the eBay servers, it gives you some indication (the traditional hourglass) instead of just appearing to stop functioning for a period of time

This isn't the end of our quest to continue to improve performance, but these changes should have a real impact on your efficiency with the form. We'll continue to focus on this area in the months to come, and hope to roll out more changes soon.

Regards,
Dawson

We've heard a number of issues from you that we've fixed recently:
- Automatically defaulting second Store category
- Keeping Gallery selection when revising
- Providing ability to remove Catalog photos
- Selecting Listing Designer picture layout without theme
- Retaining Donation and Shipping information in Templates

Other issues we'll be fixing in the next week or two:
- Adding Relist qualification text
- Retaining selections when clicking "Edit Listing"
- Highlighting sections when errors occur
- Increasing compatibility with Internet Explorer 7.0 Beta

eBay Workshop: Using the New Sell Your Item Form - June 28

Jun 28, 2006 3:27 PM
A few weeks ago, I was at eBay Live! in Las Vegas, and helped a number of members who were about to get into selling on eBay.

One of the most common questions was "I am going to be selling a few different things [for example, quilts and quilting supplies]. When I list quilts, for example, I only accept PayPal and ship USPS Priority Mail with Insurance required. But for the quilting supplies, I use a different set of options. Is there an easy way to do this using the new Sell Your Item form?"

The great answer is "YES!" We do have a solution just for this case in the new Sell Your Item form - it's called Templates. Each seller can have up to 10 templates, and they allow you to fill out the parts of your listing that you will re-use every time you list a particular type of item, so you don't have to re-type that information over and over again. In this case, our seller above could have a "Quilts" template and a "Quilting Supplies" template that had their different options specified.

Many experienced sellers have grown used to using the "Sell Similar" function to quickly list similar items, which can also be effective. The only downside to this is that you have to go in and delete all the information you don't want (the pictures, description, etc.) By using templates, you only fill in the parts you want, and can leave the rest blank!

I hope this tip helps you optimize the way you use the new Sell Your Item form. Happy listing!

Dawson

eBay Workshop: Using the New Sell Your Item Form - June 28

Jun 28, 2006 3:32 PM
Hi yesterdaygirls,

Welcome back! We continue to test and refine the new Sell Your Item form to determine the appropriate time to begin migrating our community to the form. These tests have been going very well, and we plan to start migrating sellers the next 1-2 months. We'll migrate sellers in segments, little by little. A final timeline is being determined in the next few days, so keep an eye on the Announcement Board for an upcoming post on this.

Now, one important note: During this nigration period you will still be able to go back and use the old form if you would like. At some point in the future, we will discontinue the old Sell Your Item form, but that date has not been finalized yet.

Regards,
Dawson

eBay Workshop: Using the New Sell Your Item Form - June 28

Oh, and I neglected to answer yesterdaygirls' last question!

Regarding the use of Javascript, in the new Sell Your Item form we have two modes - one that supports Javascript enabled browsers (like Internet Explorer and Firefox) and one that does not (like Opera.) So regardless of your browser you should be able to list an item using the form.

If I recall, your particular issue had to do with your use of a screenscraping tool that was not compatible with the new Sell Your Item form. You'd been in touch with some eBay technical resources to try to help - were you not able to get that resolved? While we do not offically support screenscraping programs within eBay, I'd be happy to spend a little time with you to see if I can diagnose what is still going wrong...

Dawson
