Re: Member Workshop: Advanced Searching with Prospector - Thursday, December 2nd

Hi everyone, I'm glad to be here to discuss Prospector, a powerful search application for eBay. I thought I'd start off with a brief history of how Prospector came to be.

I have been a buyer on eBay since 1998. Back around 2000, I got interested in collecting Asian antiques and began searching for them on eBay. I found a trove of items, but with the names being spelt phonetically, there was quite a bit of variation. I found myself having to make several searches with different search terms in order to get good coverage. That was when I realized that the noisy search environment on eBay was making it difficult for me to effectively find what I was looking for.

The problem extends beyond antiques of course. I found, as many have already, that there are amazing bargains and treasures to be found if searching is done comprehensively and creatively; and in some cases, often enough.

To overcome some of the shortcomings of this unique and valuable environment, I started developing a search tool, and Prospector is the result.

Prospector is a web browser for eBay that incorporates powerful search capabilities. It was built to be a general search platform that is applicable to any area of interest.

What are some of the problems of searching on eBay?

As experienced buyers know, there's huge variation in how items are titled, described, and priced. Different sellers may describe the same item differently:

  • Synonyms may be used (e.g. a computer hard drive caddy may also be listed as a carrier, cart, holder, mount, or tray).

  • Different abbreviations may be used (e.g. for new items – bn, nwt, nwot, nib, nip).

  • Words may be spelled differently, or even misspelled.

  • Different but equivalent size systems may be used (e.g. "40 Regular" and "Euro 50").

  • The use of spaces may vary (e.g. 40R, “40 R”).

  • Equivalent measures may be written (e.g. "half", "0.5", or "1/2").

  • Parts may be listed as working for only a subset of the items that they are capable of working with (e.g. a docking station that's listed for a Dell Inspiron D800 may also happen to work for the Inspiron 8500 and 8600 models).

  • In some cases, the sellers may not know how best to describe the items.

In such an environment, where item descriptions are seller-determined, it pays to be creative, comprehensive, and consistent with searching. It is advantageous to use synonyms, abbreviations, and other variations in the search queries as they may lead to auctions that few others will find.

However, such creative searching comes with a price. Once you start making multiple searches for the same or related items, you'll have to wade through multiple sets of results, which often may have many duplicates.

The search interface on eBay is flat in that one search yields one set of results. A flat interface works well where items are predictably indexed such as on Half.com or Amazon.com, but it's not ideal for noisy search environments like eBay. Flat searches also do not work well if you are looking for a range of things (e.g. a shopping list of items, or a list of alternatives) that span multiple searches.

How does Prospector improve on the current search interface?

For your medium- to long-term searches, Prospector lets you build and customize a Search Tree where you save your searches and replay them with a single click. You can combine multiple searches using Search Groups to sort and present the results together.

You can then place your Searches and Search Groups onto Pages to specify how you want the results presented.

I'll show a few examples.

You can create shopping lists and remove the individual searches as you obtain the items:

Other uses of Search Groups:

  • Combine specific searches that must currently be made separately on eBay (e.g. for clothing, if you’re looking for a Banana Republic blouse in a size small, and a Prada in a medium)

  • Combine searches on eBay core and eBay stores.

  • Combine attribute searches with title or title+description searches to cover sellers who don’t enter attributes.

With Pages, you control how and where you want your results shown.

Prospector will create a tab page to match every page that you create, and your search results will be laid out as you specify.

Here’s an example using searches for CDs and DVDs:

When the page in the example is updated, you can see how Prospector lays out the results to match the Search Tree:

What are the advantages of the Search Tree?

  • You can organize your searches and your results to fit your needs.

  • It is ideal for auctions because you can combine search variants across multiple searches without having to compromise, or having to wade through search results with duplicates.

  • You have the freedom to be creative, and you get breadth, depth, and consistency of search coverage, every time.

  • It captures combination (through Search Groups) and layout (through Pages) in a single, easy-to-use structure.

Prospector has 5 search types that you can save into the Search Tree:

  • Item - search by title, or by title and description

  • Seller

  • Bidder

  • Category

  • Search capture - this lets you set up and capture any search on eBay.

Additional filtering of the search results

For item searches, you can search multiple categories with the same search query. For all the searches, you can add title, picture, time, and bid restrictions that you can't with eBay.
