Topic: Member Workshop: Build Amazing Listing Titles with Top-Dollar Keywords!

Host: terapeak
Date: Thursday 11/08
Time: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Pacific time
Location: Workshop Board

Description: Join the research team from Terapeak for an interactive discussion on how market research can help you build your auction titles and improve your chance of top-dollar sales! Using the tools available on Terapeak, we’ll look at some examples of how to evaluate your existing listing titles and create new ones based on market research. Certain keywords are searched more and receive more bids than other keywords, and assessing the success of words before using them in your listings is a great way to build up your sales.

Cheers,

Deirdre

Welcome to our workshop!

We’re going to review some materials that come from our website,

This week, we’re discussing ways to use market research, and the tools on Terapeak, to improve your eBay listings and attract more bids. Any screen shots or graphs below are directly from the Terapeak site.

So let’s get started! I’ll post the content, and then we’ll open up the floor for any questions you might have.

The Listing Title – Get it Working for You!

The listing title is your storefront on eBay, so it’s a good investment of your time to make sure that you are using the most appropriate keywords possible within your 55 characters of “real estate” on eBay. Doing some keyword research on Terapeak is going to help you generate ideas, evaluate your existing keywords, and create a strategy for the words that you use.

The eBay help area provides a great introduction to creating titles – check it out at Link if you feel you would like some more background regarding the practice of titling your listings.

Do you have listings that you feel are underperforming? Or do you have a competitor consistently out-selling you with similar items? A great place to start evaluating and making changes is at your listing title. Consider carefully that the majority of shopping on eBay is done with keyword searches. A shopper will enter the keywords of the item they wish to shop for, and the eBay search reports on listings which titles include the keywords.

As a seller, I want to take into consideration what people are searching for, and what words are going to help my buyer find my items.

Let’s look at some example titles I found recently on eBay:

Black Women Boots sizes 7 ½

A pretty vague listing. As a shopper, I’m not that interested.

ITALIAN DESIGNER WHITE GOLD SWEATER JACKET M 8/10 ITALY

Now I love designer sweaters as much as the next person…an Italian mystery designer. Not sure that I would search for “Italian designer sweater” though…the use of ALL CAPS is interesting too.

We can deconstruct these titles, using the Terapeak Title Builder, and create some improved titles for our listings…

Our first listing is for a pair of boots. “Black Women Boots size 7 ½”
If we open up this auction we see that the pair in question is a rather nice pair of Coach ankle boots. Seems like this seller is hiding some valuable information!

If I am a shopper looking for boots I am definitely going to want information about the size and color of the boots. This is a good start. Let’s look at the results when we enter the word “boots” into the Terapeak Title Builder…

The Title Builder generates a list of the next recurrent words appearing in eBay listing titles out of a sample of 400 listings. This list includes the average price, ship, max/min price to help weigh your results. The highest value word here is “womens” followed by “new”.

An interesting side-note here is that the word “womens” is more technically correct as “women’s” and we can use it either way, as eBay’s finding feature stems the words and results will show words both with ‘ and without in this case. Make sure you check the search ahead of time with whichever word you are using, as this may not be the case with all words.

Let’s add that to our listing – so now we have …

These are now the top recurrent words within the new search criteria. The active Title Builder searches automatically and compiles results as we enter information in the text bar.

We can see that “size” is a good word to include, and that “black” is associated with a high dollar value as well. Luckily, both these words fit the items that we are selling. So we now have...

We need to add the size – 7.5 and would we benefit by adding the Euro size?

A quick entry into our text field will tell us….

With boots 7.5 – we get an average price of $34.46, max price of $399.99.

With the Euro size (38) boots 38 – the average price is $271.08, max of $1,579.91.

In this case, I’m going to add the European sizing as well…there seems to be a higher value associated with that keyword, and it also makes my listing more accessible to a larger market.

My auction title is now – New women’s boots black size 7.5 38
We have 20 precious characters left, that I can use to further advertise the shoe. Shall I mention the brand name? If it is a popular company, I would be smart to add the brand and make it searchable by that information. Is it an ankle boot or heeled? That would be criteria your customer would search for. Play around with the value associated with different descriptive words too!

For my listing title I have decided on “New Coach Women’s Black Ankle Boots size 7.5 38 Heels”

This uses up 53 characters, and using the Title Builder I’ve determined the most valuable keywords for my item for sale, and made sure I’ve used the most searchable terms I can. Now I can relax and watch the bids come in….

A brief review of the second example

“ITALIAN DESIGNER WHITE GOLD SWEATER JACKET M 8/10 ITALY”

If you checked out the link to the eBay page I’d mentioned earlier on naming your listing, you’ll notice they say not to use ALL CAPS. Generally online using ALL CAPS is considered yelling, and the use of the letters also makes the title harder to read. The reason we have capital and lower case letters is to make it easier for the eye to follow text.

We’ll look at this listing title a little differently, and use a Terapeak item search. I’ll search for “Italian designer” within the women’s sweater sub-category. This will show us the closed listings including those words within their titles.

My results as follows:

With an average price of $10 and a sell through rate of less than 25%, I’m not too excited about my “italian designer” sweater’s chance. Compare these results with the ones I find using the specific designer name –

We now have a listing for “Roberto Cavalli White Gold Sweater Jacket Coat 8 10 M”
With one character to spare, we’ve got a much more finding-friendly title. Without the ALL CAPS presentation, our title is also clean and easy to read.

This listing title meets our criteria – it’s easy to read, includes pertinent and accurate information on the item for sale. It has neither “Keyword Spam”, nor misleading words and should garner us a good amount of shoppers.

I noticed that the title listings that were being used in the examples noted were quite long. I have tried to add as much information in the listing titles but we feel like sometimes we are too limited. There are some words that we'd like to add, but are having to be judicious about what words we use since we have limited room.
In the collectibles market that we sell in, we'd like to drive as much traffic to out listings as possible with the listing titles.
Any suggestions?

Hi Angel Vintage Treasure,

Since we have only 55 characters to "sell" the listing, you want to make sure you maximize those. The more pertinent words you include, the more you increase your likelihood of people finding them, as lots of ebay shoppers search by keywords.

I would do some research on similar items and see what keywords come up frequently - the content here should get you started in that direction.

Thanks for joining in!
