Tips for general computer maintenance.

Security is more than just protecting against outside attacks. Like keeping your car running, it means regular tune-ups and routine maintenance. Massive file fragmentation or corrupt files can bring your system to its knees just as effectively, if not more so, than any computer virus. Now, granted - there are going to be times when that machine is just out to get you. However, you can avoid many of the most common computer breakdowns and protect yourself and your data with some simple computer maintenance.

If you wish to keep your PC running at its best, then there are some things you need to do periodically (at least once a month), to ensure optimum performance. Before proceeding it is worth removing any files that you don't wish to keep. You can start by emptying your recycle bin.

Temporary Internet Files and History.

Every page that you look at on the internet deposits new files onto your PC. Firstly, every page that you look at, including all the picture files are deposited onto your hard drive in a folder called 'Temporary Internet Files'. This folder can grow to quite a large size, depending on how your PC is configured. There is also a folder on your hard drive in which is stored a history of the web pages visited, usually for a period of days depending again on how the PC is configured.

You can delete all these files from within the preferences portion of your web browser. To keep your internet experience snappy, do this at least once a month.

Defragment and Scandisk

During the course of using your PC, the files on the hard drive tend to get moved around a fair bit, often resulting in files being fragmented. The ramifications of this are:-

  • It will slow your system down

  • It will increase wear and tear on your Hard Drive

  • Increased risk of losing information

To avoid this problem it is necessary to defragment your hard drive periodically. On Windows systems, this tool is located in the Start menu under "Accessories" and then "System Tools." Depending on the condition of the drive, this may take from minutes to hours. If it is done frequently (at least once a month) it will run quicker.

Protect your PC with a Firewall.

A firewall is a device - hardware or software - that filters information being transferred through your internet connection. If a packet of information is flagged by the filters, it is not allowed through. Simply, a firewall is a barrier to keep destructive forces away from your property. Most modern operating systems have firewalls built in. Unless you connect through a router with a hardware firewall built-in, you definitely need to run a software firewall at all times.

You can test your current firewall situation to see if you need additional protection by running a firewall test from one of the following sites:

If you already have a firewall configured and in use you should check it occasionally to ensure that it is functioning by using one of the firewall tests above.

If you don't have a firewall in-place you should set one up immediately. If one is already in place it would be a good idea to check to ensure its effectiveness monthly.

BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP

Backing up your work on a regular basis gives you the security of knowing that even if you do toss something before its time - you can retrieve it. This makes maintenance a worry free activity. You will be amazed at how much you never refer to again.

Hard drives fail more often than any other component on a typical computer. When a hard drive fails it is normally impossible to recover any data from it without spending a small fortune at a data recovery service. Therefore, if you have any data on your computer that is at all valuable to you, having a functional backup system in-place is absolutely essential. If you already have a functional backup system in-place, make sure it's actually working! You should backup as often as you create data that you would not want to loose. Also, if your backup procedure is automated don't assume it is working! Check it frequently.

In the realm of software applications, there has been a shift towards online applications that don't require a physical application (and relevant data) to be stored on your hard disk. These applications are invaluable to most users - not only because you can access your data from anywhere with an internet connection, but because you no longer have to worry about backing up that data. The online application gives you that piece of mind because it handles backups for you. For example, using KeepMore.net will allow you to access your bookkeeping (and other business) data from anywhere, and backs it up every single night. That way, wherever you go - your data is there with you.

Keep your Operating System up-to-date

Keeping your operating system current is vitally important to maintaining your computer. Microsoft commonly releases patches to newly exposed security holes, and if your computer isn't updated regularly you could be at risk. Other operating system vendors also regularly release patches and updates for their operating system, and have a built in mechanism for installing those updates. You should check for updates at least once a week - check for these updates when you update your anti-virus and spyware software!

Startup Programs

An exceptionally common computer problem occurs when Windows (or any other OS) automatically loads too many programs at startup. This causes the computer to set aside RAM and virtual memory for programs that you may never use. The effect - especially on systems with minimal RAM - is a significant slowdown at startup, and during use.

Only a few of these programs need to be started with the system - such as antivirus or firewall - almost all others can be started and stopped as needed. If you are a Windows user, most all of these programs will show up in the taskbar - and can be disabled from automatically starting up.

Installed Programs

Uninstall any programs you no longer use. They're just taking up space.

Use good work habits

Shut down your machine properly, and respond to warnings and error messages promptly. You should also keep your machine as clean as possible by periodically opening its case to remove accumulated dust, cleaning your keyboard and removing dust from your mouse.

Questions?

Now, I know that I've thrown a lot of information your way, but hopefully you've had some time to digest it.

I'm about done, and I believe we have some time left, so I'd like to open up the workshop to any questions you may have about what we've already covered.

I know ebay has a special toolbar that is supposed to give added security. However it dramatically slows down downloading of websites. Has this issue been resolved?

minniealdinger: I'm not especially familiar with the eBay toolbar, so I won't be much help in with that particular program.

The purpose of today's discussion is to provide a general overview of security and system maintenance.

You may be able to contact eBay customer support?

Ok. I do all of the things you mentioned already. I also have windows XP and like the feature of being able to reset the date on my computer should a virus or adware get in. I have only used it twice over the last year.

I also have an older MAC are there security issues I should worry about when using it?
