Description: This month the Terapeak marketing team will be hosting a workshop to introduce some tools that you can use to find the best times to end your auctions. There are a variety of free and paid tools that eBay Sellers can use to find out how long to list an item, what time of the day or week to end an auction, or what times of year see big spikes in demand. We will even show you a few cool trends that illustrate the huge spikes in sales that occur over the upcoming holiday season! Join us as we review some great examples and stick around for the hour to answer any questions you may have about market research!

Today we are discussing how you can use market research to find the best time to list your items and achieve maximum profits. This is an important topic because planning your auction listings can have a large impact on your sales. For example, selling school supplies too early could result in few bids and low sold prices, and selling too late could result in no sales. You also want to pick the best time of day and day of week that gives you high traffic and highest possible selling prices.

One of the big mistakes beginner sellers make is that they neglect to account for the time of year that their auction is listed. The fact is, the time at which your auction is listed will have a big impact on the number of people who see your auction, the number of people who bid on your auction, and thus, the price you get for your item.

To illustrate our point we will run through a few examples of how planning your auction properly is very important.

Back to School

A huge shopping season is in effect as I write this - Back to School. A popular item during this time is Graphing Calculators; a yearly trend graph is shown below:




As you can see they sell best at the end of August and in January. This may seem like an obvious observation but we can look at it in more detail and know exactly when we should list to get the highest traffic, largest amount of bids and the highest price.

This trend graph is for calculators as well, but it is broken down into intervals of 6 months. You can see that the best selling time is the fourth week of August. After that time sales begin to decline. From this you can see that you would want to begin listing around the third week of August, depending on how many calculators you have to sell.

Halloween

Another example we can look at is finding out the best time to begin listing Halloween costumes.



As you can see sales start to rise in late July and reach a peak just before the end of October, at which time they plummet. So if I was selling costumes, I would want to make sure my inventory was out there for those peak times, and cleared out before that big drop! You can see that the rest of the year is fairly steady for costumes.

Researching helps you get more out of seasonal sales patterns! If you were in the business of selling costumes you could use this data to plan your selling. You would know that you should start listing around the 3rd week of August, and try to have all your costumes sold by the 4th week of October. Terapeak research like this can be performed on the item of your choice.

Best Time of Day to List

Another important part of selling on eBay is ending your auction at the right time of day. Every item is unique and each will have different demand throughout the day.



The example above is a graph showing the number of total listings vs. the number of successful listings for each hour of the day. The item is “Baby Stroller”. When we did this workshop last year, most sales occurred from 10am-12pm and the most successful time was at 10pm. Compare this to a recent graph of sales, and the times have changed. The majority of items are selling at 6-8 pm within the past 2 months. This is a good example of why it is important to keep up on trends, and do your research regularly.

We can also look at what time of day has the highest average price.



With “Baby Strollers” it looks like 12-2 am fetches the highest prices- nearly 90 auctions end in the wee hours.

Best Time of Week to List

The day you choose to end your listing is also very important. If you look at this example of “Rock and Republic Denim” you can see that demand fluctuates throughout the week. As you can see Friday has the highest Average Price, and the highest Sell Through %, while Thursday has the highest quantity of items selling. Depending on my sales strategy, I would want to factor this information into listing my new items.



It definitely pays to do some research to find the best time of the week to end your auction, that way you know when you will have the greatest success for your particular item.
