So many people selling on eBay treat their auction listings like garage sales…and then act shocked when they get garage sale prices. In our time together this morning, I would love to show you some tricks I use too, not only get more than garage sale prices, but usually 20-30% more than my competition selling the exact same thing.

The most important thing I could ever tell you is to quit thinking like a seller…think like a buyer. They are the ones who are going to be handing over their hard earned cash. They will tell you volumes on getting the most profit out of your listings…you just need to know how to listen to them…

TIMING: Timing on eBay is extremely important. When you start your listing, of course, determines when the auction will end (unless you include Buy It Now bids – but we’ll get to that later). When your auction ends, determines the amount of possible buyers who will be viewing your ad at that time.

Although eBay peak traffic tends to occur every week at approx. 6:00-7:00 pm Pacific Time on Sundays is that when your customers are buying on eBay? Your auctions should end when YOUR buyers are on the site. If you are selling B2B (business-to-business) items, then they will do best Tuesday through Thursday afternoon – when the office managers are buying. Stay-At-Home moms tend to buy early Monday afternoon. They have kicked everyone out of the house, done a few chores, and are on the computer for a bit before everyone gets home. If you have buyers from another country, then they are probably buying at 3am our time.

Hi All,
I enjoy the workshops. What does corporate auction coach mean? Coaches sellers who work with corporations?
Thank you.

What is bad for the seller is fabulous for the buyer and visa versa. As a buyer, look for listings that are ending in non-peak times and on holidays. You will be able to purchase items at a much lower costs and with less competition. As a seller, don’t end your item on a holiday, as many of your potential buyers are probably enjoying turkey or ham with their loved ones.

So make sure you are ending your auctions when your buyers are on the site. (Don’t worry, I will teach you how to find out this information.)

CHECK OUT THE COMPETITION – I am always amused when someone brings me an item and tells me that their price guidebook said it was worth so much money. One of the first things any seller/buyer needs to realize is that on eBay anything goes. There are no price guides to determine what someone should pay for something. Much of eBay is based on emotions, which have no boundaries when it comes to money. Can you show me a guidebook that says you can get $9 for a broken emu eggshell? Or $5.00 for a paper shopping bag from a major department store? Or a set of paper towels for $21.00? The same is true for items such as electronics and tools. I can walk into a Sears store and pay approximately 20% LESS for the same tool that is selling currently on eBay. Or right after Christmas, I can find phenomenal deals on electronics because eBay is gutted in January with unwanted Christmas presents. Sometimes this emotional bidding appears to make no sense. But if you listen to the buyers, it truly does.

As many of you know, I call this the spaghetti test. Throwing your auction items out to the world of eBay and hope they stick to a buyer. Utilize the tools that eBay provides for you to determine exactly what the buyers wants. Your research will tell you what pricing strategy the buyers want, what day and time they want to buy, and even how they want their items shipped. The information you can gather from people currently selling items like yours on eBay and what has sold in the last 15 days can give you incredible insight in selling your item. If you set your minimum or reserve bid too high, no one will bid. If you set it too low, you will shortchange yourself.

Current Marketing Information – Type in a keyword or two about your item into eBay’s search box to determine what similar items are currently selling on eBay. Scroll down the left side and click Completed Listings. This will bring up the last 15 days of listings for that search term. Go to the top right hand side and sort by Price: Highest First. (We only care about the people making the most amount of money selling what we want to, right?) Now look for the ending prices that are green – not red. Green means the item successfully sold. Now, look for what the buyers are trying to tell you…could be keywords in the title that you didn’t think to add, pricing strategies, what day of the week and time they are buying this item, and even what shipping preferences they want.
