I am a passionate advocate of small business in America. My direction in life, and for KeepMore.net, is guided by what makes small business successful. Need-less-to-say, I found it very uplifting when I read a recent report in the Small Business Advocate (February 2007) published by the U.S. Small Business Administration. They stated, "It is easy to be an advocate for small business. Small firms account for half of our gross domestic product, employ half of the American workforce, and generate most of our net new jobs."

As an owner of your own small business, you join the millions who classify themselves as 'entrepreneurs'. The dictionary defines an entrepreneur as a 'risk-taking businessperson' or 'somebody who sets up and finances new commercial enterprises to make a profit'. So now you need to ask yourself, 'are you in business to make a profit?' I would certainly hope so! Or, are you one of the few who have gone into business to take all the business write-off's and reduce your tax liability. If so, let's re-think your thoughts here.

I talk to a lot of people during tax season and they consistently hear me state that I would not complain if I had to pay $100,000 in federal income tax. Now, don't get me wrong. I don't like paying taxes any more than anybody else. However, it is a necessary evil, and, if I have to pay taxes, why not pay big taxes? Did you know that if I paid $100,000 in Federal income tax (using my own personal tax scenario) I would have approximately $350,000 of taxable income (after mortgage interest, RE taxes, etc) and would leave me with approximately $250,000 in my bank account!

So let's talk about what steps you can take to help you become more successful in 2007 (even if you have to pay more tax).

The five steps I would like to discuss today are:

  • Personal goal setting

  • Business goal setting

  • Know your target market

  • Know your business profitability

  • Analyze your profits against your goals

Personal Goal Setting

I cannot stress enough the importance of goal setting, both for yourself and your business. I would like to refer you to our November 14, 2006 eBay workshop - Link. JP O'Brien, CEO of KeepMore.net and himself an entrepreneur, goes into detail about the importance of goal setting in his two prior successes as an 'entrepreneur'. He also explains setting goals using the "S.M.A.R.T" method. Take some time before the end of this week to attend the Goals workshop and set your own personal goals. There you'll find more detail about 'S.M.A.R.T' goals. It is an easy read and only takes a few minutes.

Take some time with your family and have your family members set goals too. Then set aside a time once a week to review those goals and set new, higher goals when necessary. What a great way to spend some extra, valuable time with your family!

Business Goal Setting

This is where the 'rubber meets the road'. JP stated that the true driver of his success was his practice of creating, writing down, and publicly sharing his goals with others. Below are his five steps in 'Setting Your Business Goals for Long Term Success':

  • Set 3 month, 1 year, 3 year goals

  • Make it public to someone who will keep you accountable

  • Every decision you make is a step toward your goals

  • Build a Board of Advisors

  • Set a reward for each goal you reach

We are never too young to try something new. I have a Goal Setting Template available that you can use to track your goals. There are worksheets to track your Personal Goals, your Business Goals and explains the 'S.M.A.R.T' method. Request your copy (phyllis@sagefire.com) and start your process immediately!

Remember, Goal Setting is what you make of it. If you are going to work hard anyway, why not be successful? And I would add, 'If you are going to pay taxes, pay big taxes' - and enjoy the fruits of all your hard work.

Know your target market

Only by knowing your target market can you know where to market. A great resource on this subject is a book by Cliff Ennico, Attorney at Law and eBay University speaker. Mr. Ennico also states in his book, 'Small Business Survival Guide,' 'Your competitors are not necessarily people that are doing the "same things" you are doing. They are the people that are going after the same markets you are trying to reach..." By knowing your target market, you also know more about your competition.

Having a good CRM (customer relationship management) tool helps you to better know, and understand, your target market. Just remember this - it does not have to be a complicated, expensive, or time consuming system. Check out KeepMore.net's "Opportunity Tracker" in our live demo at www.KeepMore.net. Just click on 'Take us for a test drive using our Live Demo' link, then click on Premium Services and read all about your opportunity to track your business prospects. Vaughn Baker, Director of Sales at KeepMore.net, states - 'you can't make the sale if you forget to make the call!'
