What's up with offers from a company that 'sells' you info on suppliers? Are they legitimate?

Hi sportscardselectronicsandmore.
This is a very good question. Market Research is a key aspect to determining what product is best to sell and will make your best profit margins. You want to consider that you want sell what sells not necessarily what you are passionate about. Keep in mind 1) Research your marketplace (in this case collectible card collectors) 2) Find what they need 3) Sell what they need -> This all involves lots of research. Finding legitimate suppliers depends on the type of products you want to sell. I suggest reading our ebook on product sourcing to learn about the process of finding legitimate wholesalers.

Hi laceyme ,
No you do not have to have Powerseller status. You will be required by the wholesalers to have a sales tax id and a business name. So if you have not set up you company, I would recommend that you start with this first. Reference Post 6.

Hi Deirdre .. How important is selecting the catagory for a selling item? or do most buyers do a generic search?

Deirdre, the scenario I was talking about was an offer via email to 'supply' lists of suppliers for a fee.

Hi icansell4u:

This workshop is about product sourcing.

In response to your question regarding the selection of a given category, before you list your item, search for items that are the same or similar to yours and take note what categories they are listed in. Also look at the number of bids and the page-view counter (if shown) and select categories with a high bid and page-view count.

You can find more information about category selection here:

Thanks,

Deirdre

Hi gottafish4,

You want to be very careful with lists that you have to purchase. Normally the information is out of date and filled with middlemen. Some may not work with online sellers at all.

Most Suppliers that you want to work with actually do not advertise online. They mainly go to tradeshows or join associations to find large retailers. Suppliers are in the business of getting product in and out of their warehouses as soon as possible. They do not spend large budgets on marketing.

Within OneSource, we do not take a commission or charge suppliers to be in the database . They are required to meet and uphold certain requirements. In some cases, we will even temporarily remove suppliers from the database.

When finding a new source for product I always insist on getting samples of the products I am interested in buying in bulk first. Sometimes that means I have to place a $1-200 order. But I make sure that I get items that I really think will sell and ask a lot of questions before placeing the order to avoid misunderstandings.
