Let me first start by saying, the single greatest asset you as a seller have is your repeat customer list. Repeat customers often pay the highest prices and are the easiest to deal with. That means more profit for you. To paraphrase the saying about old vs. new friends: New buyers are silver, but old buyers are gold.

Repeat purchases happen only when your buyer 1) trusts you and 2) you have something else they want at the right price. After a buyer successfully makes their first purchase with you, use the established trust and invite them to buy a complimentary product to the first sale at a 10% discount.

Driving repeat sales is a long-term project. Your feedback score is a critical piece of repeat sales. Build up your repeat customer list the same way you build up your positive feedback scores – one sale at a time. And like feedback, once you build up your repeat customer list, you will reap many benefits.

Welcome to the workshop iotafied: Every seller will have a different repeat purchase rate based on items offered, category and individual feedback scores. Collectible sellers clearly have higher rates then practical sellers. But, overall – and that means it is broad average – we estimate sellers do 11% of their sales with repeat customers over time. Meaning a whopping 89% are one time sales. That is the exact OPPPOSITE of what every brick-and-mortar retailer would say about their sales.

Hi, I put thank you cards with a note in all my shipping. Are we allowed to do some type of coupon; ie send a discount coupon with their shipping that will give them some discount on their next purchase from you?

I know you right about repeat buyer gold, but I never feel comfortable contacting them. Do you have any suggestion on how to break the ice?

eBay buyers love a deal, so giving an incentive for repeat purchases is important. Some sellers include a 10% off coupon in packages they mail. If you do, put a 30 day limit on it to stimulate action. You can also use our service, MyStoreCredit.com, to give all your buyers a future store credit good for one year only on a future eBay purchase from you.

Isn't it considered spam if you email your buyers regards your items listed or upcoming sales. jilynne

Thank you lmoart: First, encourage repeat sales by mentioning it in your listings. At a minimum, add a statement to your listing template like: “I want my buyers to be happy with every purchase so they will return and buy from me again and again.” Then, run your business as if you really DO want every buyer to buy again.

Thanks for the question Jilynne: I reccomend a thank you note after the sale. BUT -- once the original transaction is over and your “Thank you” email is sent, DO NOT send your buyer additional emails promoting your items UNLESS you have their opt-in permission. Sending additional emails puts you at risk of violating SPAM laws and eBay policies.

Hi Brian, With regard to offering a 10% discount, you are referring to store items and fixed price. Has this worked for auction (if they win the item)?
The estimated 11% of sales of repeat buyers is small when compared to new buyers.
Do you have data that supports that the 10% works ?
Thanks
Art
