Reserve Prices
There are many things to consider when using a Reserve Price. Perhaps you have an expensive item and want to be certain that you will receive a set amount in return for that item. However, some sellers believe Reserve Prices scare away bidders, who are critical for increasing the price of your item.
Example:
Let’s look at one of the popular products on eBay, the Motorola Razor phone.
A total of 4,908 Motorola Razor were listed on eBay from March 28 to April 26, with a Success Rate of 70.27% and an Average Price of $180. In the figure below, the upper graph shows that a very large percentage of Motorola Razor sales were successful.
Terapeak research shows that 7.30% of Motorola Razor listings used the Reserve Price feature. We can isolate these listings, and found that auctions with a Reserve Price had a Success Rate of 64.91%, and an Average Price of $197.
Placing a Reserve on a Motorola Razor would have cost you slightly more than $2. In return, you would have decreased your chance of success by 5%, and gained $17 on average. If your auction were unsuccessful, you would have to pay the listing fees (and possibly the Reserve fees) all over again!
