What is Market Research?

On the most basic level Market Research is pretty much what it sounds like. You are researching “the market”.

Market = The vast number of internet shoppers (your potential customers) and current online retailers (your potential competition)

Research = Gathering information about the Market that is directly related to a product you are thinking about selling.

Since your market is online, your research is performed online as well. Your ultimate goal with market research is to find out whether or not “product x” is a good idea to sell or whether it’s a product you should probably avoid.

How Important Is Market Research?

Market Research is as important to your online business as gas is to your car. If you don’t put gas in your car, what will happen? It won’t start; it won’t go… it’ll just sit there lifeless. The products you choose to sell are like the fuel for your online business.
If you pick the wrong products your business won’t start; it won’t go…it’ll just sit there lifeless.

Market Research is not something you do once and then never have to do again. When you research and find a product you can sell, that’s great! But you won’t stop there. You want to continue researching and finding new products to sell. Successful online retailers do NOT stay successful by finding and selling 1 really good product. They build multiple streams of income by finding and selling many different products. And their product choices are all based on market research.

I sell event tickets on E-bay right now, and I'm looking to find another item to sell within a profit margin of $50 per auction. The ticket biz is very seasonal, so another item for Xmas sales and other months is a huge priority for me right now. Is there a free research service to analyze data from E-bay?

When you are just starting out, it’s very normal to feel a bit overwhelmed. There are so many shopping customers and so many people selling products and so many products to choose from that it’s easy to get kind of lost. This feeling of being lost often leads to poor business decisions.
