1. Hi, I am Joyceb/danse and I am excited to share some information and ideas for using PayPal on eBay and other Web commerce sites along with some of the options that PayPal offers.

I have been on eBay since 1998 as a buyer and seller. I was a Power Seller in 1998 and 1999. I began using PayPal before it became part of the eBay group and feel eBay’s acquisition of PayPal was one of the best marriages that could happen.

I am an eBay Education Specialist trained to give eBay authorized workshops offline. During the course of these workshops I am asked quite a few questions about PayPal and today I will share some of those topics with you and hope it helps with your PayPal experience.

What is PayPal

Once question I am asked is: What is PayPal?

PayPal was “founded in 1998 and enables any individual or business with an email address to securely, easily, and quickly send and receive payments online. PayPal’s service bilds on the existing financial infrastructure of bank accounts and credit cards and utilizes the worlds most advanced proprietary fraud prevention systems to create a safe, global, real-time payment solution” From the PayPal About Us page on the PayPal site.

PayPal is now a global and award winning leader for online payment solutions. It has over 71 million accounts worldwide in 56 countries. It was acquired by eBay in October of 2002. That is quite an accomplishment in less than eight years.

2. On May 24, 2005 I held another PayPal Workshop where we discussed the basics for signing up for a PayPal account and looking over some of the different applications on PayPal. I invite you to take a look at that workshop for additional information not included in this workshop.

3. Once you have signed up for a PayPal account there are many additional options at your disposal and today we will look at a few of them.

But first I would like to share with you a new directive by PayPal and eBay.

“Beginning August 19, 2005, if you sell on eBay and offer PayPal, your PayPal account must accept all forms of payment including payments made via credit card, regardless of whether you display the PayPal logo with credit card icons. You must have a Premier or Business PayPal Account or be willing to upgrade from a Personal PayPal Account to a Premier or Business Account if you receive a credit card payment. You may not communicate to eBay buyers (e.g. via your eBay item description) that you only accept, or will not accept, specific forms of PayPal payment.

I invite you to read more about this policy on the General Announcements Board

What this means is that you have a Premier or Business account you must accept all the types of payment that PayPal designates.
This is a sensible directive that most Sellers and Buyers should welcome.

4. You can access the PayPal link at: Link or you can click on the PayPal link on the eBay Home page in the navigation bar at the right or at the bottom of the page. You can also find a link on your My eBay page.

5. PayPal currently offers three types of accounts:

1. Personal

2. Premium

3. Business

1. Personal account:
Is best if your main goal is purchasing items on or off eBay. You can send money free but cannot accept debit or credit cards

2. Premier Account: Is perfect for buying and selling online under your own name. You can accept payment for credit card transactions and receive all payments for a small fee

3. Business Account: Is the next step up for your online business. Some of the features available for Business Accounts are:
You can add a business name to be included on your customer’s credit card statements. Assign multiple users (employees) to a single account with multiple user access.

5. PayPal Buyer Protection: Security is a top priority at PayPal and the built in protection for both buyers and sellers adds confidence between Buyer and Seller by protecting transactions made with PayPal

Buyers and Sellers Transactions covered by PayPal Buyer Protection

:
One thing to remember before you take any action is to give the Seller/Buyer time and opportunity to resolve a situation first.
Try to resolve the situation through direct communication and give each other benefit of the doubt before you proceed to more formal complaints or negative feedback.

It is important to read the directives on the PayPal site under PayPal Protection for Buyers and Sellers

I have found this to be important in my buying and selling on eBay. New users sometimes forget it takes time to process orders. If you are a buyer it is important to read the auctions carefully for terms of payment and delivery.
If you are a Seller be specific about how you wish to transact your business when you put up any auction or item for sale.

6. Transaction fees For Domestic Payments USA:
Often I am asked how much it costs if you are a Seller and use PayPal as your source of transaction:

This chart explains how the fees are determined:

7. How do PayPal fees compare with Merchant accounts:
I have had a merchant account for over 25 years and PayPal fees are far more cost effective than my merchant account has ever been.
Recently my Merchant account fees have gone up and I am charged extra for electronic transactions (when a card is not present).
These additional transaction fees are non-existent with PayPal.
Check the comparison chart which illustrates the difference between PayPal credit card acceptance and traditional Merchant accounts.

I would like to add a little more about the difference between PayPal and a Merchant account from my perspective. I have a Merchant account with one of the largest account providers in the USA and have had it for 25 years. When I was selling Beanie Babies in 1998/1999 on eBay there were no other online options that I was aware of and the Merchant account afforded me credibility in my transactions.

But the buyer had to call on my 800 number to complete the transaction by giving me their credit card information on the telephone. At the time having a direct Merchant account online was costly and difficult to obtain. Today they are still difficult to obtain and costly for material and your credit card electronic machine.

Because of the type of business I transact, I still have that account. Each month I receive a billing statement for my Merchant account. The fees are automatically deducted from my business checking account. I never know what those fees are until after they have been deducted! A few years ago I noted that my deductions had increased significantly—when I called the Merchant account provider they explained they were now deducting a dollar every time I put through an electronic transfer—translated—anytime I electronically entered a credit card number and did not swipe the card! Most of my transactions are done electronically! My costs rose significantly. cont.

I signed up for PayPal early in 2000 before it was acquired by eBay. I loved the idea and hoped it would open the door to online merchandising for me. But it was a little glitchy in the beginning so I used it as a payment source for a subscription I had on a writer’s site I owned and it worked well enough.

Then eBay bought PayPal in 2002 and within a year it had many of the problems worked out. Within two years it was finally becoming what I hoped for and today PayPal is the best answer I have found on the Web.

There are no hidden costs, no billing, nothing to be concerned about with automatic withdrawals from my checking account. The transaction fee is taken out immediately and what ends up in my PayPal account is mine!!! That alone is one of my reasons to be grateful PayPal is available. If I need money transferred to my checking account I can do it for free! (Usually within 48 hours). If I want to buy something on eBay or another site that accepts PayPal it’s free. No credit card fees (I use the banking option)

So take it from someone who has been down the Merchant Account road, PayPal is by far the better solution to online e-commerce and e-retail solutions.

PayPal offers easy to integrate coding for both accepting PayPal as a Payment option and integrating with a shopping cart.

8. Your personal PayPal Landing page: This is what your PayPal page looks like when you access it after you have signed in.
I suggest you bookmark PayPal.com for easy access. Remember when you see blue underlined text, that indicates a link which will give you more and better information about PayPal options
You might download the eBay toolbar (another excellent free tool from eBay) so all your information is at hand on your browser toolbar (this includes easy access to PayPal).

9. When you access your PayPal landing page all the current transaction information is on view and you can see exactly who and what transactions have been made. You have the option of expanding the transaction page by following the links “All Activity”, “Items won”, Items sold.”
