Description: Have you wondered why some people make lots of money selling on eBay and others quit before they even see a profit? What is the difference between these two types of sellers? There’s a good chance the successful seller uses research to determine what, when and how to sell their products. Please join Sara Taheri and Denise Hogue from Terapeak Marketplace Research for a gentle and fun introduction to how you can put market research to practice and increase your profitability on eBay. There will be examples based on Terapeak Research reports and you will get the chance to ask our research experts questions live.

Cheers,

Today we’re using examples of the research you find at Terapeak.com. Terapeak is a web-based research tool that allows users to review up to 90 days worth of completed eBay listings. If you can use a Google search, or find your favorite seller on eBay, you can use our site!

Reviewing past eBay listings can give you a solid understanding of the market, and a good idea about how, when, and what sells on eBay. By using information about other seller’s success and failures, you can craft your own winning listings and maximize your eBay profits! And it’s not hard at all!

Look at it this way: if you had something to sell in a store at a mall, you would probably visit the other stores in the mall to see how they are marketing the product and what price they are selling it for. You can also see what is popular and what items are duds by reviewing their product mix. This really helps you develop a plan for selling your item.

Just because eBay is web-based doesn’t mean you can’t create this same sort of review using market research!

For example, what if you had an extra sleeping bag you wanted to sell? We’ll pretend I received two as birthday presents, (hint, hint…) and have decided to sell one. With summer coming up, I’m sure lots of people are thinking about camping! (I am!) So I have a nice, new down sleeping bag to sell, and I’m going to sell it on eBay!

First thing I’m going to do is look at a two year trend for the category I am thinking of listing my sleeping bag in, Sporting Goods > Camping, Hiking, Backpacking > Sleeping Gear >Sleeping Bags>Down

This will show me how the sales in this category have been over the past two years. Before you look at the next slide, guess when the sales would peak, and when they would be lowest. I guessed this time of year (April, May) as that’s when I’m starting to think about camping!

Here is a graph that represents the past two years of sales on eBay in the Sporting Goods>Camping, Hiking, Backpacking> Sleeping Gear> Sleeping Bags> Down category.

The blue lines are the total sold listings, and you can see that in December 06 sales peaked.

May sales are only 45 and 42% of top value for the two years – and that surprises me!
Sales are relatively level for the summer, and last year slowly built up for Christmas.
I may decide to list my item near the Christmas rush, or in March or April, where the sales were approximately 70% of those in December.

There are more ways to look at the numbers!

This is a result of a search for “down sleeping bags”. It is an account of all closed listings within the past 30 days. You can see the average price for all sold listings is $108.62. There were 597 listed in the past 30 days, and 55.11% of them sold. The most active end of auction time was Wednesday at 6-7 pm. So already I have an overview of the market I’m entering. Is my sleeping bag worth $108? Am I happy with that potential price?

If I decide to sell my sleeping bag, I need to know the best way to list it on eBay. By looking at a detailed report of the last 30 days of sales on eBay, I can see what listings achieved high dollar value, and which were left to end without bids.

Here is an overview of the listing options. On the right I can see the type, amount of listings, sold listings, sell-through and sold price of each. It looks like for sell through rate (that is the most items sold) that a Multiple Item Listing (more than one item) or Bid Auction is most likely to sell. This is one way to position my auction.

In my situation, with the one bag to sell, it looks like a Bid Auction is the best listing choice for me.

We also need to decide when to end the listing. You want to have it end at a time when there is the largest audience of potential bidders.

In a previous report, we saw that the highest number of listings ended at 6-7pm on Wednesdays. Is this the best time for me to list? Let’s review the actual sales within our search…

These two reports are how I will decide when to end my auction. If I’m looking at when the highest dollar value sales are, it looks like Monday at 5 or 8pm is a good choice. If I’m looking for the highest instance of sales, then I’d consider Sunday in the early evening.

What if I decided I want to sell more than one sleeping bag, and maybe start selling a bunch of outdoor equipment through eBay? I could do some quick research on Terapeak and check out my competition, and determine what products to sell. For example –

Within the Browse function, I get a “Heat Map” of categories on eBay. Within Sleeping Bags, I can see that there are more sales of Synthetic bags than Down. I can further expand that category (“drill down”) and

see that cold weather bags have the most sales within that group.

It would be interesting to see who the top seller is of sleeping bags. It’s easy to check on Terapeak! I just click the “Top Seller” link and I get a report of the top sellers within the category.

The top sellers seem to have a high sell through rate (the top seller has $3,127 worth of closed sales in the past 7 days and a 100% sell-through rate), and they have lots of bid activity too (186). I might want to review their sales and how they are positioning their listings.

These are some really good examples about how simple research can help you list your items. We’ve done a really simple overview, but you can imagine the depth of information available on our site. Regardless, it’s easy to use (as easy as doing a Google search or checking out your favorite sellers on eBay!) and can help you improve your auctions right away!

If anyone has any questions about the material we’ve covered above – how we get it, what it means, or anything else, please “speak” up!
