eBay Category Structure

If we complete the "silver ipod mini" search we typed in a few slides ago, we are provided with a variety of closed listings, not all of which are what we're looking for. Our search returned lots of iPods, but we also found iPod cables, cases and pouches. An easy way to eliminate unwanted items is to click on "mp3 Players and Accessories" in the Matching Categories box on the left side of the screen - this limits your search to just this category.

We are going to keep on clicking down into the sub-categories in the following order: Consumer Electronics > MP3 Players & Accessories > MP3 Players > Apple iPod > Mini, 4GB (1,000 songs) > Silver until we get to the most specific category for our search.

Terapeak, I just performed a closed auction search. . . what is the significance of these colors on the prices? Does red mean not sold and green mean sold?

And if the "buy it now" is red, does that mean the item was not sold at all?

Hi Prolist... if I was looking for glass panels to go in my cabinet doors, I would look wherever the cabinets are... that's just me, though.

HI Woodworks,

Miniature clocks is an interesting product. It may be difficult to find your item in the three weeks of closed listings you can find on eBay. You may want to keep an eye on eBay closed listings for a few weeks before you post, just to see as many products as you can. Have you had experience selling your clocks in a store?

Researching by using ISBN #s: I type in the ISBN # in the search field and find all of those for sale on eBay and then look for the one's that have closed. Also, try going to Barnes & Noble or other bookstore, type in the ISBN, and find out how much your book sells for there. It might be worth mentioning in your description.

I have not tried that possibility. I get a lot of hits on them but no sales. Very discouraging. I am spending more than making at this point.

Price Floors and Ceilings

An effective screening method is to put in a reasonable price "floor" and "ceiling". This technique will remove most of the item sales that have been listed improperly. A quick visual inspection of the items that are most like the product you are researching will give you an idea for what the price range should be. In this case we will use $100 as the bottom price and $250 for the upper limit.

edm203,
You are correct on the significance of the colors: red= not sold, green= sold, no matter if it is a buy it now or an auction format. Thanks for the question!

Hi Woodworks,

That is too bad you have had some failed auctions. We will touch on our research product later in the workshop, and will be providing a two week free trial. We have 90 days of closed listings on file, so I recommend you try Terapeak and see if you can find some clocks like yours.

I spend the majority of my time researching! Unfortunately I don't deal in just one or two items... I have a little bit of EVERYTHING!... lol
I would love to have help in eliminating some of that research time!

Refining the search to put price floor and ceiling limits is NEW to me. Thanks for the great tip. When you determine price range do you look for what was the cheapest a similar item sold for and what the highest price an item sold for?

Item Specifics

If you have never used Item Specifics, you should give it a try! Item Specifics are the best way to get the most relevant search results. Let's use a new example to illustrate the use of this filter.

Let's say we want to research the special collector's edition of the Lord of the Rings DVD. If you type in "lord of the rings special edition" you will find all sorts of different lord of the rings DVDs from the trilogy in all sorts of condition from new to used. If you are just looking for a USED DVD, all you have to do is select that Item Specific from the drop-down menu. By using this simple technique you have accurately filtered your results to find exactly what you were looking for.
