Member Workshop: The eBay Research Treasure Hunt - December 20th

Dec 20, 2005 2:00 PM
Hi, I’m Jen Cano - the PR Director for Bright Builders (the makers of HammerTap). We are a Certified Solution Provider that specializes in eBay market research.

Today I’ll talk about some basic research concepts as we decide which of three items from my garage I should sell. Then, we’ll find ways to increase my chances of selling it, as well as strategies for making more money on it.

I’m going to post the workshop messages every couple of minutes. To help you keep track of the workshop, I’ll mark my workshop posts with the phrase “Workshop Message #” at the top.

When my older brother and I were kids, the ice-cream truck would come down our street every day in the summer.

Since we didn’t get allowance, we had to gain sales skills very early! We rummaged around the house to find items to sell door-to-door--stuff that we thought would supply ice-cream money for the next afternoon. Sometimes we hit the jackpot, and sometimes we knocked on doors all afternoon without a single sale.

On eBay, we’re doing kind of the same thing. Only, we want to get beyond ice-cream money. We’re entrepreneurs looking for a more solid income, a more sure way to make that sell. If only we knew what buyers wanted.

That’s where auction research comes in. Right now, the eBay community is buzzing about “eBay market research.” What’s all the talk about?

Here’s what it comes down to: selling more auctions and getting higher selling prices is not just “good luck.”

There are always reasons why one auction performs well while others fail. Sometimes it’s the day and time the auction ends. Sometimes it’s the auction type. Maybe it’s the keywords used in the auction title, the starting price, the category, or dozens of other listing elements. Or maybe it’s a combination of all those things.

Even with trial and error, what are the chances that you are going to come up with the optimal combination of listing strategies for your auctions?

Trial and error works eventually. Those of you who have been selling for a while could teach us a few things about how to sell a product you’ve been selling for a long time, right? But, if you want to learn from the competition’s experience, and you want to learn quickly, you need eBay market research.

What my big brother and I would have given to know exactly which things in our attic would sell!

I found that most successfully sold items have lots of visits (>20). The listing time varies. My auction listings have very few visits 4-5 averagely...

Let’s use market research to find out which of three items I should sell. Researching low-risk items will give us great experience and skills for the future, when we actually have money riding on the line. We’re getting prepared to make a lot more than ice-cream money.

In my garage, I found three potentials:
1. a used, but functional Sony VCR,
2. a large mantel mirror, and
3. some decorative sconces from the Pottery Barn.

Right now, I’d like you to make two guesses about each item. First, what are the chances each item will sell (in percentage)? Second, how much will each item sell for? Then, I’d like you to guess which of the three is most likely to sell and which will make the most money.

When you’re guessing, I’d like you to pay attention to how confident you were when you guessed how much my items would sell for and their chances of selling. Without auction research, you’re “guessing” all the time.

(Feel free to post your guesses!)
