Hello everyone and welcome to the second installment of The 7 Essential Steps to Successful eBay Marketing workshop series. In this presentation, you'll learn about the numerous resources available to sellers that help you improve productivity and increase sales. This second presentation and Q&A session is titled “The eBay Seller’s Toolbox.”

My name is Phil Dunn, marketing and advertising writer for Fortune 500 companies. I’m here with Janelle Elms, eBay University instructor and co-author of our book, “The 7 Essential Steps to Successful eBay Marketing.”

Now that you’ve taken some time to focus on your business and define your audience, it’s time to explore some very tangible resources that will allow you to sell more profitably and efficiently on eBay.

We’re not going to go over general eBay mechanics here. Instead, our aim is to assist you in going beyond the basic nuts and bolts of eBay and delve into some more advanced selling tools.

They also allow you to automate customer communications and other tedious tasks involved in eBay selling. TurboLister (Link) is free downloadable software from eBay that enables you to create bulk listings and bulk uploads. You can create customized item templates, edit bulk listings, schedule start time in bulk, and, of course list in bulk.

The latest version of TurboLister has a newly designed interface and makes listing and editing listings easier than previous versions.

eBay Selling Manager Track helps medium-volume sellers manage their listings. It allows you to monitor active listings, generate bulk feedback, print invoices, and print labels in bulk all from the My eBay page. It’s $4.99 per month and works hand-in-hand with Turbo Lister.

With SMP, functions such as feedback and customer e-mails that once were handled individually can now be handled dozens at a time. A few simple checks of boxes and clicks of a button and you’re on your way. You can even set preferences to automatically send customers e-mail, notifying them of winning bids, payments received, or items shipped.

The SMP interface is automatically hosted on your My eBay page, which gives you access to all your selling activity from any remote location with Internet access. The interface divides your selling activity into different views, such as scheduled listings and active listings, that make it much easier to manage your listings and sales.

eBay’s Blackthorne Basic is another selling productivity tool. It’s an all-in-one desktop application that helps you create professional listings in bulk, track the status of sales, and manage buyer communication and feedback. Essentially, it’s an updated and renamed version of the Seller's Assistant Basic and Pro products. Blackthorne Basic is designed for sellers that list at least 25 items a month and prefer an end-to-end desktop tool.

This is desktop listing management software that is not Web-based (as opposed to SM and SMP). It’s more like TurboLister in this respect. Subscriptions are $9.99 per month.

Blackthorne Pro is a more comprehensive listing, tracking, and inventory management sales tool. It’s a beefed up version of the Basic program designed for medium to high volume sellers. It supports multiple users, allows you to create consignment plans and track suppliers, and includes a free listing designer. The subscription is $24.99 per month.

Some of these tools operate in a more limited capacity but come at a less expensive price than eBay’s tools. Others offer a higher level of functionality and can be customized to accommodate your particular business. Of course, these types of services are more costly, but if you’re selling at a high rate and volume, it can be worth the investment.
