Greetings!

This is Gregory Harrison and I am the CTO for Mpire Corporation (and an eBay Nut!). We are a Certified Solution Provider that specializes in providing a true business management application for eBay Sellers.

I’m excited to be here today to discuss a timely topic: Leveraging your financial data to effectively evaluate your business and report your taxable income for the 2005 tax season!

Today I will be talking about the elements that can be tracked (automatically and manually) and used to effectively monitor your profitability (an everyday action) and evaluate your tax consequences (quarterly/yearly). We will define these elements and then discuss how they become relevant to tax reporting! There are many elements that ultimately define the health and well-being of your business and which impact your tax consequence - something that we at Mpire have taken great care to streamline for you.

Running your eBay business like a business!

OK, so maybe you have heard this before??!!

One thing that I feel very passionate about is treating your eBay business like any other business. Whether you are clearing $500 per month in gross sales or $5 Million, tracking your costs and constantly assessing your goals and performance are critical to ANY business. Meticulously tracking all financial elements of your sales is as critical as finding the right inventory to sell! You also need to make sure that you consider ALL income and expense elements to truly measure your profitability. The major emphasis on this workshop is to reinforce the need to track your financials as a basis for guiding your future business plans, assessing taxes, and how to put this information to work.

If you are an individual who is "cleaning house" (getting rid of everything you have but no longer use) at what point does the govt. consider you a business? Is there a dollar amount that you reach when the govt says you are operating as a business not an individual?
Thanks!!

I have been selling on ebay about 9 months now and I wanted to know How I am doing. Is there a way that I could calculate my success. and is there any criteria with which I could compare my achievements. I had never run a business before and I really do not know if I am doing right or not

Be persistent and consistent!

This means making a habit out of tracking all income and expense related transactions that you incur.

Being meticulous about tracking your income and spending is less about effort and more about habit. All you need is the “habit” of pocketing those receipts and a folder to keep them in. Once you have the information, there are many ways of putting it to work, which we will talk about in a minute.

Most people don’t consider their eBay activities a “business” until they realize Uncle Sam needs to get paid, which typically results in approximating income and expenses. Having to guess at your prior income and expenses is risky, since it may lead you to under or over report your income and/or expenses – either way, you hurt your business!

Keep ALL of your receipts and make tracking easier by charging expenses to a single credit card, separate from your personal cards. I highly recommend using PayPal and a business-only credit card. This helps consolidates “offline” expenses and income to a limited set of reporting sources.

I'm new at this - I thought it was a video type discussion - is it only writing back and forth? I was wondering how you treat personal items sold, for tax purposes. Most items we sell are from yard sales, etc., but some are just our own things - are those exempt? Sherie

I buy 99% of my inventory from retail outlets (department stores, etc.) Do I still have to charge sales tax for sales in my state (CA)?

gerkensinc, thanks for your question (post 5)

Any income you earn in your eBay business is considered taxable, according to Uncle Sam. So to be safe, I recommend tracking your transaction information. If you get audited, this information will be valuable in capturing the exact details of your eBay profit/loss.

You will see here in this workshop that the major emphasis is on tracking this information so that there is no guessing involved.

My unofficial position is to experiment on eBay until you are making a profit - once you are, it is time to get yourself set up as a business, to protect yourself.

khanomak, (post 8)

The best indicators of whether you are making a profit is to make sure you track your income and revenue elements - we will be posting on that exact topic next!

Once I post it, let me know if I can further clarify!
