Member Workshop: Use Market Research to Craft an Unbeatable Auction!-July 7

Jun 29, 2006 11:55 PM
Topic: Member Workshop: Make More Money on eBay – Use Market Research to Craft an Unbeatable Auction!

Host: terapeak
Date: Friday 07/07
Time: 11:00 to 12:00 PT
Location: Workshop Board

Description: Don’t play the guessing game when creating an auction, use market research and increase your sales and sell-through rate. Selling on eBay can be challenging, market research can help you decide:

  • What time of the year to list
  • What day of the week to end
  • What hour of the day to end
  • How long to list your auction
  • What listing promotions to use
  • What price to start with
  • What title to use
  • What listing type to use

Terapeak marketing team Sarah Taheri, Dave Frey, and Morgan Brooks will use this workshop to illustrate how market research can be used to build outstanding auctions. They will run through the process of building an auction and show how market research can be used to make the right choices.

Cheers,

Deirdre

Yikes, I see the questions are coming fast and furious now - will we be covering the subjects in the order listed above? If so, I'll hide and watch ?:| until my question on timing comes up.

I think we all agree that a service like this is valuable. What does it cost and how does it work? How much time does it take?

To start off, Jenny wanted to research her item. Researching properly is very important; you must know where your item will be found on eBay.

Jenny first researched “Jacket” and she found:

As you can see in “Jacket” she gets “Women’s Blazers”, “Women’s Outerwear”…etc.

To avoid including this information in her research and disrupting her results, she decided to research very specifically.

Her item is:

  • Clothing
  • Men’s
  • Outerwear
  • Sporting Goods

Based on this she researched;

1. Clothing, Shoes and Accessories > Men’s Clothing > Outerwear > "Jackets"

2. Sporting Goods > Camping > Clothing

Researching in these categories will give her the most relevant information for selling her item. She also now knows what category she will list in. All the research in the workshop is based on these categories.

Learning Objective

Market Research tells you where the item you are selling is found on eBay and can help you find what category to list in.

Best Time of Year to List

To get started she wanted to look at the best time of year to list her item. She started by searching categories;

Clothing, Shoes and Accessories > Men’s Clothing > Outerwear

She found the following results:

This trend analysis shows her that Nov/Dec is the best time to sell men’s outerwear on eBay. Unfortunately for her it is June, which only has a success rate of approximately 20%. It would be great if she waited until Nov/Dec, where she will have the best luck, unless she needs to sell right away.

Learning Objective

Trend graphs can help you plan the perfect time of year to list your items on eBay.

To investigate further she searched:

Clothing > Shoes and Accessories > Outerwear > “Jacket”

The sell-through rate for jackets is currently at 38.12% and there was ~ 1 million in sales over the last month. This is good news, this means that jackets are doing better than what we saw with outerwear! Maybe it wouldn't be so bad to sell a rain jacket in June!

Learning Objective

Terapeak gives you in depth information about your item. Instead of just searching "Men's Outerwear" we can search more specifically and see information on all the "jackets" in "Men's Outerwear". By searching for “Jacket” we got rid of all the other outerwear like snow-pants, mittens, gloves, hats…etc. We now know that “Jackets” perform better than outerwear as a whole.
