Member Workshop: Using eBay Market Data to Discover New Product Ideas 03/10

Mar 10, 2005 1:11 PM
Hi-
I am relatively new to e-bay selling and I am planning to open a store soon. I would like to learn more about what products sell best on e-bay. My current idea is to sell women's fashion tops. Looking forward to learning more from this workshop.

Thanks for coming ar-trade! We are going to go through a specific example of how to find a hot category and subsequent products to sell by starting with peoples demand for products and whether or not there is a good opportunity to sell in that market based on supply and demand principles.

Having a bachelor's degree in bus. ad and 40+ years of selling and marketing experience, I've been intrigued by the world of eBay. During my six years in eBay, I've studied many auctions to discern market demand and supply. Further I have studied how auctions are worded, featured, photographed and formed to attract bids. I've observed that success in online selling is largely based on timing by the buyer finding the seller's item they seek.
In recent weeks I've simplified and narrowed my philosophy about opening prices, Reserve prices and duration for an auction. Some items have so little demand that they must be sold for almost no profit. This is the trickiest part of listing to me.

Probability of Selling

The Success Rate is one of the most important parts of the profitability equation. After all, if things don’t sell, there is no money to be made! A good success rate will also save you time and money associated with constantly re-listing. Once you have found a category with a good success ratio (high) we can drill into it to find out more about its Volume and Profit Margin

Volume

Many products sell different volumes at different times of the year. By looking at the yearly trends for this category using Terapeak we can see patterns that develop with this product.

These calculators get the highest sales price and reach the highest volumes in cycles that build up around the beginning of September and January. This would naturally correlate with this being the time when new classes start in high school and college. This gives us insight into the Volume portion of the equation and when you can make the most money selling many listings for this item.

Many products on eBay have different demand profiles. There are certain times of the year when you can stock more inventory and expect to sell it, and other times when demand will begin to cool off. This is known as the product lifecycle, and knowledge of these patterns will enable you to make smarter inventory decisions and save costs associated with holding unused inventory and re-listing unsold auctions.

treetopguy2028 you approach this the same way that we do. Our hope is to give you some tools that can easily aggregate all of those numbers and figures so that you can use real market data to learn about where the best opportunities to profit on eBay are.

Profit Margin

Terapeak can enable you to understand the average market value of items that are selling so you can evaluate whether or not something will be profitable for you to sell on eBay.

To do this we look at actual “closed listings’ figures to see averages for the product we are researching. You just enter the keywords that best describe the item to perform a search that will show you what the item’s average sale price is. You can even use minus keywords to help eliminate unwanted search results. In this case we used “TI-84 Texas Instruments Graphing Calculator -used”. This will help us only get items that are new.

Now you see all of the listing information associated with listings containing these words in the title. You can see the current average sale price is $81.98 and a quick browse through the closed listings again will assure you that you are only getting results for the appropriate item.

If you can’t find a reliable source of this item on your own, you might still be able to take advantage of this profit opportunity using eBay as your source! Go back to your lifecycle graphs to locate price frequency for a category at different points in time and look for opportunities to buy low and sell high. In this example when you compare the average price for these calculators during the last week of June to the last week of August you can see the price per unit has risen almost $20 from the end of June to the end of August. You could use this kind of information to make a profit buying calculators in June and selling them in August right back on eBay!
