This workshop is going to look at how you can get started on your holiday sales. It’s only October, but smart retailers know that now is the time to start reviewing your current listings and getting great new products out for the busy holiday season. If you don’t start looking now, you’re going to be behind the curve! Next time you’re at the mall, or any brick and mortar retailer, look at what their promotions are pointed at. After Halloween, I guarantee you will see the holiday items rolling out. You want to be just as prepared and stocked as these retailers – you run the risk of losing purchases if your customers decide to shop at that mall!

We’ll look at this in the most logical order:

How to find HOT PRODUCTS using Terapeak Research!
What affect does SEASONALITY have on your core items?
WHERE and WHEN should listings be placed to attract the holiday shoppers?
Attracting NEW eBay SHOPPERS…the more the merrier!

I like to use a fictional example in workshops to work through the material, in hopes that the application of the information in a situation similar to yours makes it familiar to you.
Let’s pretend that we are a clothing store that is gearing up for the holiday shopping season. We have an existing solid business, with a nice supply of quality items, and a good amount of returning customers. What we want to do now is add inventory to supply holiday shoppers with fabulous gifts and generate even more revenue.

HOT PRODUCTS

We know as store owners that we have certain items that sell more successfully than others, because we do our research. What we want to look at now is what new products, trending forward to the busy holiday season, are going to fetch us even more sales.

Using research we can determine what areas are increasing in popularity. Using the “Browse Categories” search tool within Terapeak we can evaluate increases in categories and subcategories. We can then look at the categories and see what items are picking up the pace.

Pretending we are a clothing business that is looking at carrying sleepwear, let’s look at an example of the subcategories within eBay.com > Clothing, Shoes & Accessories > Women's Clothing > Intimates > Sleepwear, Robes

The color coding within the “Browse Categories” tool in Terapeak indicates the total sales within the categories listed. Red indicates the highest activity. Blue is the second highest – Sleepwear.

If we select the Sleepwear/Robes subcategory we will see a report on all of the listings closed within our criteria for the past month. We can sort the info by price or bids – I like to sort by bids to determine where the most action is –

By picking a listing with a lot of bids, for example – this item has 46 bids on it:

We can then take this item and do some more in-depth research to it – if there is demand, maybe it is something we’d like to add to our inventory for holiday shoppers! Running a specific item search within Terapeak provides us with this overview of sales for the past 30 days (the subscription site of Terapeak will report on 90 days of sales):

Not a lot of listings – and definitely a favorable sell-through rate! This is definitely a fun item I would consider for holiday sales!

SEASONALITY

Sticking with our example, let’s see how the seasonality of our item category – sleepwear – trends over the last two years.

This category peaks at December, and remains steady throughout the remainder of the year. That means that we’ll see a lot of new shoppers, so we need to make sure we’ve got the right inventory to supply them!

ATTRACTING HOLIDAY SHOPPERS

Keep in mind that there is a huge increase in sales during the holiday season within the category. Traditionally, your main buyer may be women looking for sleepwear – but in the holiday season, your shopper changes. Think about how many new eBayers are checking out items from eBay listings and consider that. You may want to tweak your listings and listing information to attract them.

Do a quick Keyword search to check out the best keywords for your auction – for example, a search for sleepwear results in:

I’ll keep these in mind as I create my listings. The word “sleepwear” brings with it an average price of $11.51, where “Nightgown” fetches an average price of $18.20. If applicable, I’m going to make sure to include those higher dollar keywords within my listing title.

If you are wishing to attract new eBayers and people who are new to online retail, make sure your listings are clear and detailed. Think of all the questions a new buyer might have and answer them in your listing. How much for shipping? What is the detailed size and fabric content? What forms of payment do you take?

You want to make your listings clear and attractive for your buyers. Building your listings require you to decide what sort of listing features to add, and which to not include. Since listing features add cost to your listings, it is important to evaluate how they will benefit your listing before paying the extra money.

It does stand to reason that during the holidays a gallery/featured listing will serve you well, since you will have more “window shoppers” during this time. Let’s look at the listing features that currently occur within a “pajama” search:

Almost half of all listings (the total is 11,488 within “pajama” – in women’s clothing) have a gallery listing, while very few have a Gift Listing – which may be a nice feature to add closer to the holidays. Gift listings highlight to buyers that you have gift wrap, express shipping, or the ability to ship to the gift’s recipient. These are all bonuses to holiday shoppers, particularly as the holidays loom closer. Keep a close eye on how your competitors are building their listing promotions to ensure that your listings are standing out!
