Natural Search Workshop – Improving Your Search Engine Rankings & Traffic!

May 1, 2006 1:02 PM
Welcome and thanks for spending time with us!

I am here with some of my colleagues on the internet marketing team and, together, we are leading this Natural Search Workshop. We’d like to begin by giving a brief overview of natural search and search optimization, then discuss some of the levers available to eBay users, and (most importantly!) take questions and ask you to submit examples of your eBay pages (listings, store pages, Reviews & Guides, etc) for potential ways to improve your search engine rankings and traffic!

So… let’s get started and please start preparing your questions and examples!

What is Natural Search

"Natural” or “organic" search refers to the unpaid search results within search engines like Google, MSN, and Yahoo. There are two main search classifications: natural search and paid search. While paid search refers to all pay-per-click advertising (such as Google AdWords and Overture), natural search refers to all unpaid search results based on relevance.

Improving your natural search rankings is a terrific way to deliver increased traffic to your listings, store, and other eBay pages… in turn, this can mean improved sales and conversions for you.

How Does Natural Search Work?

Each search engine has a different algorithm that determines what pages are shown and in what order for each search query. This is evident by doing the same search on Google, Yahoo and MSN – the results will differ! While the different search engines indeed have different algorithms and ranking systems, two things are at the heart of any search engine:

1) Content
2) Linking & Finding

More about Content…

Simply put – CONTENT IS KING!

The content on your pages and listings is what readers find useful - likewise, it’s what the search engines find useful. Think about it… a search engine’s job is to deliver the most relevant webpage and content to your search query! The best way to rank well in search engines is to write unique, high quality content that is useful to read – so as a simple rule, adding content to any of your eBay pages (listings, stores, guides, etc) is the most important aspect of search engine rankings.

Make sure to place strong, relevant keywords throughout the page body and in text. Place pertinent keywords within your headers by using header tags (H1, H2, etc) and strong formatting. If, for instance, your About Me page is dedicated to your Vintage Surf Board collection, you want to make sure that, first and foremost, the page’s focus is on Vintage Surf Boards and that, throughout the content, there are relevant uses of the keyword phrase.

More about Linking & Finding…

Even if you have written the best Vintage Surf Board guide on the web, it has to be found by the engines! Links are important because they help search engines like Google find related content and navigate through websites - think of links like street signs: they help search engines navigate from page to page.

Links also help define the ‘popularity’ of a particular webpage – the more links that point to a particular page, the more popular it is! Furthermore, the more relevant or contextual the links are, the more powerful they are considered.

What does all of this mean? Let’s return to the example of your Vintage Surf Board Guide written on Link. You could add links to your most relevant search results pages or your store. Additionally, eBay automatically adds links to your listings, store, About Me page, etc – helping the search engines find and rank your other pages!

What can I do on eBay to increase search engine traffic & rankings?

There are many free and easy ways to drive natural search traffic on eBay. Below are just a few!

1) Add Content to your Listings - Listing pages can be found in search engines and deliver very targeted buyers. Adding quality, relevant content to your listings will deliver more than item descriptions… it will deliver search engine traffic!

2) Create an About Me page – About Me pages are free resources for eBay users and great opportunities to describe yourself, convey trust and link to your other eBay pages. Get started Link

3) Write Reviews & Guides – In addition to the current $10,000 Guide Giveaway (Link), writing reviews and guides demonstrates your knowledge, conveys trust, provides links to your listings and eBay pages, and delivers incremental traffic via search engines. Get started Link

4) Add Content to your eBay Store - If you have an eBay Store, add content about yourself and your listings. Also be sure to add links to your related pages and information.

5) Add Relevant Links to your other Pages & Content – Whether its your About Me page or your Reviews & Guides, adding links is a great way to showcase your content and help search engines find it!

Natural Search Workshop – Improving Your Search Engine Rankings & Traffic!

I am wondering. My store name was espressobooks, all run together, I changed it to espresso_books_shopping_mall, thinking that the search engines might not be reading espressobooks as being a book store, when searched for, and that opening it up would increase my hits. What are your thoughts.
Thanks for all the great info here. I would love to have you review my guides and listings. I am redoing my me page,so there is nothing there now.

You want to make sure your titles are both helpful to the on eBay user, as well as good from a natural search perspective. While that may be slightly less than "exciting", you want to ensure the buyers will find you based on the best and most descriptive title you can use. It is a balancing act.
