Hello! This is Rebecca Shapiro and Diane Falvey. We’re both entrepreneurs and eBay store owners. We’re also business partners at OASIS Connect (www.oasisconnect.com), a company we started to help eBay sellers and businesses get set up the right way on eBay because these days eBay should be a part of every online business.

At OASIS Connect, we’ve been where you are; starting an eBay or online business without the right guidance or tools. While there is plenty of eBay how-to information available, we have found that it often isn’t specific enough. We’ve both made many expensive and timely mistakes selling on eBay. We want to help you avoid those pitfalls and rise to the top as quickly and successfully as possible. We’re also actively selling on eBay right now with our own eBay stores so we’re not removed from what’s happening in the marketplace.

There are so many great ways to get your Internet business noticed online, from email marketing to social networking. But where do you start? One place is eBay. eBay not only gives you 233 million customers to start with, they also give you great marketing tools that will not only help you get more visibility on Google and other search engines, they will also help you establish yourself as an expert in your marketplace and drive customers to your website and keep them coming back time and again. And, on eBay, these tools are simple to use, and they are free with your store subscription and sometimes even without a store.

Newsletters:
You may be keeping an email list of your customers in your email inbox. And you may even email them from time to time. But it’s important that you have permission to email your customers or it’s considered spam. Even if someone has purchased something from you, they still need to agree to being contacted about future sales, promotions or new items. Unless of course, you’ve gotten them to sign up for your eBay newsletter!

Did you know that eBay provides you with all the tools you’ll need to create a great email marketing campaign for free when you own an eBay store?

When you open an eBay basic store, you can send up to 5,000 emails a month to customers who’ve signed up for your newsletter or have added you to their favorite sellers list. With a featured store, your email allotment jumps to 7,500, and with an anchor store, you get 10,000 free emails a month. If you need to send more emails that that, you’ll pay just 1 penny per email sent.

There are several ways to get your customers to be email newsletter subscribers.

1. Ask your customers to mark you as “A favorite seller.” Place links in your basic store design, by going to Manage My Store > Listing Frames > and check the Add to Favorite Stores box and “Link to sign up for store newsletter” box.
2. Add links in your listings that point customers to add you as a favorite seller. When they add you as a favorite seller, they can also sign up for your newsletter at the same time.
3. Create a Newsletter promotion box to give your visitors an easy way to sign up for your newsletter. Make sure this promotion box makes it exciting to join your newsletter.

For example, let your customers know that your newsletter subscribers get special discounts or are the first to know about new, hard to find merchandise in your store! If they love your products, they will want the scoop and sign up!

4. Be sure to rename your newsletter from General Interest to something more exciting like “Dog Nose News”. Customers won’t be compelled to sign up for a newsletter with a boring title.

Create a Newsletter your customers can’t wait to open!

1. Send a newsletter to your subscribers each week on the same day and at around the same time. This gives your customers an idea of when they will hear from you and by limiting your emails to once a week, you won’t be overwhelming them.

2. Make the content juicy and relevant--tips about scrapbooking if you own a scrapbook supply store; the hot colors for fall if you are selling clothing; the latest and greatest new offerings from any designer or company that you are selling.

3. Give your newsletter subscribers promotion codes for discounts when they shop in your store, exclusive of course only to them!

4. Or come up with your own unique exciting ways to get your newsletter subscribers excited enough to tell their friends about what you do for them.

5. And make sure to link to your eBay listings to make it easy to shop. With eBay’s newsletter templates, this is so easy!

Select the type of email that you want to create: Welcome, Ending Soonest, Items On Sale, Newly Listed (default choice), Previous Purchase, or Custom (create your own content and layout). The type of email you select will pre-populate the items that show up in the Showcase and/or Item List view as well as provide default text for the email. You can of course change any part of the email in the edit phase before you send it out.

Remember, someone who signs up for your newsletter is already interested in what you are selling and wants to spend their money with you. You just need to remind them and what better way to do this than with newsletters! Give your customers great reasons to shop with you and you’ll have customers for life.

Guides

One of our favorite free eBay tools are Guides. You don’t even have to have a store subscription to create reviews and guides, and they can boost your business in just a few short weeks.

When we develop eBay stores and selling strategies for our customers, one of the first things we recommend is writing at least one guide related to the products they are selling, if not more.
You can write a guide about anything and write as many guides as you’d like as long as they aren’t identical content. For example, if you are selling collectible figurines, consider a guide about care and cleaning. If you are selling home décor items, why not write a guide about the hot new trends for the coming season.

These guides not only show your expertise in your field, they are search engine magnets. Place keywords throughout your guide and set up your tags (keywords and keyword phrases) correctly and you can show up on Google within a week. eBay Guides are rich in content, which the search engines love, and coupled with eBay’s powerful keyword positioning, these guides are a surefire way to get quick exposure for your business.

Quick Steps to Creating an effective Guide:

• Include your company name or user id in your guide so it’s easy for potential customers to find you.
• Use your keywords three times in your guide.
• Give juicy information in your guide. This is not a place to promote your store or what you are selling, but rather to give information about the types of products you sell. What’s the best way to use your product? How do you take care of it? Why it’s considered the best in its class?
• Link to your eBay listings or eBay store from your guide. The eBay guide wysiwyg tool makes it easy to create an attractive guide, adding pictures and links back to your eBay listings!
• Make sure you have listing related to your keywords so eBay places your listings alongside your guides.
• Be sure to sign your guides by inviting customers to visit your store and link back to your home page. We also recommend adding your logo at the bottom of each guide.
• Add *tags*. eBay gives you spaces for up to 10 “meta” tags, keywords and keyword phrases that make it easy to search for your guide and can get picked up by the search engines.
• Ask your fellow eBayers to vote on your guides. Once you’ve gotten a few “helpful” votes, you will gain a Top 10,000 Reviewer icon next to your name. Customers will read your guides and feel comfortable doing business with you because you know your products so well. Potential customers will find you through your guides and become new customers! And, the most popular guides may appear on the Reviews & Guides Home page, in the “Most Helpful Member Guides” section.

Creating *TAGS* for your eBay guide and Blogs
Entering search tags – or keywords and keyword phrases – in member features like eBay My World, Blogs and Guides identifies topics and concepts unique to content you create. Search engines hunt for tags embedded in web pages to return in search results.
Using search tags can set your Guide apart from others with more general content.
But make sure you use tags that are relevant to the content you are writing about or you run the risk of your tags being considered spam.
You can have up to 10 tags altogether, and each tag can be a word or phrase of up to 4 words each.

A tip to making guide writing easy is to first write your guide ahead of time in Notepad (most PCs have this under Accessories) or in a similarly unformatted type program. Writing your guide in a Word document and then cutting and pasting into a web-based program like eBay’s Guides or even blogs can result in what looks like gibberish to your readers.

eBay Blogs

Are you blogging about your business? If not, you should be! Short for the word “weblog,” blogs are basically online journals where you can write about anything you wish, and blogging has quickly become one of the best ways to get your opinion heard, talk about the things that interest you, or provide lots of information about the items you are selling in your eBay store. Internet surfers love blogs because they provide lots of interesting content, and provide a sense of community, since it gives your readers an option to leave comments on blogs you post.

Most blogs are free and really easy to set up and even easier on eBay. Just go to Link and click View Your Blog on the left navigation bar. If you don’t have a blog, you’ll go to a “create your blog” page.

Give your blog entry a title that will entice customers and then write your entry. Blog entries should be short, sweet and informational. Write about things you are passionate about that pertain to your business. Write about why a certain sneaker you carry is better for marathons. Don’t use your blog for promotional purposes (like announcing sales).

Write blog entries that prompt your readers to leave comments.

Again, you can enter up to 10 tags for your blog that will help readers find you. And last but not least, decide how your blog will look by choosing a theme.

Create Legal, Juicy Content:

Whenever you write content on eBay or anywhere for that matter, use common sense and play by the rules.

eBay has guidelines for information that is and is not permitted in your guides or blogs. When creating any ebay content, be sure to follow eBay’s rules and post only the information that is allowed on eBay.
