Preparing your eBay Store for the Holiday Shopping Season - Oct 22

eBay was the #1 Trafficked Holiday Site in 2006

eBay was the #1 trafficked e-commerce site during the 2006 holiday season, ahead of other giants like Amazon, Wal-Mart, and Target.

We’re advertising more this year, and expect traffic to be even better.

More buyers than ever will be flocking to eBay, so this is your time to take advantage of the traffic and prepare for big holiday profits!

People who have never purchased online before are headed to the web to do their holiday shopping in order to avoid frantic malls, overflowing parking lots, and rising gas prices.

And eBay makes it easy for buyers to shop, with an abundance of great items to choose from!

Put Your Best Merchandise Forward

Just as you go to your favorite store looking for new and exciting items to purchase during the holiday season, so do your customers.

The items that will catch their eye are the new, unique, and fresh merchandise of the season.

It’s time to move your best and brightest merchandise to the front of your store (and we’ll talk about how to showcase it in a minute) and save the out of date, out of season merchandise for a year-end clearance sale.

You want your customers to find your best items quickly and easily. You don’t want them to have to wade through pages and pages of last season’s merchandise.

So the first order of business is to “clear out the clutter” from your eBay store and put old merchandise aside for a later date.

You can easily move last season’s products into it’s own category, and run a sale using eBay’s Markdown Manager

But don’t intermix outdated merchandise with the brand new holiday products you’ve sourced.

The retail studies show that holiday buyers are in “variety and selection” mindset and it’s a very different mindset than when they are in “clearance sale” mindset.

So you don’t want to mix those two buyer experiences together!

Now let’s talk about match your store's look and feel to the buyer's desire for variety and selection.

Create Holiday Categories

Your store categories are your store’s virtual departments or aisles. They act as the guide to help your customers find exactly what they are looking for quickly and easily.

During the holidays, you want to showcase your best merchandise at the top of your store categories list and create special categories for that merchandise.

Create new categories your featured holiday products. When creating categories use relevant, searchable, keywords. Because your store category names be indexed by the search engines.

The search engine studies show that most buyers search using specific keyword phrases, so you’ll want to give your store categories a specific name to make them search engine friendly but you also need to give thought to how your buyers will shop.

Will they shop by brand name, theme, product type etc.?

For example, if you carry a wide assortment of holiday themed plates, rather than creating a category that says “Holiday plates”, you may split the category out by theme, brand name or style such as:

“Enesco Santa Platters”

Note: Your categories should contain enough products to look full but not so many to be as to be overwhelming.

When a buyer clicks on a category, they want to see a selection and representation of the products in the category. Having only one item in a category can leave your buyer feeling unfulfilled.

However, having 190 items in a category will leave your buyer feeling overwhelmed and they are unlikely to scroll through all the pages.

Don’t Make Your Customers Work!

The fastest way to loose a sale is to make your customers work for it.

If a customer has to dig too deep to find your merchandise, wade through hundreds of listings, or search through vague and confusing store categories, they will click out of your store in search of one that is better organized.

When we do eBay store reviews at WhatDoISell.com, this is one of the biggest problems we see!

…Store category names that are vague. Categories overflowing with miscellaneous listings require that require time and patience on the part of the buyer to navigate them.

Set up your categories so holiday buyers can quickly and easily see what you have to offer.

Once you have set up your store categories, you can easily arrange them in the order that will be most appealing to your buyers and beneficial for your store.

To arrange your categories go to: My eBay > Manage My Store > Store Categories > Reorder Store Categories

Update Store Keywords

You’ve brought in new inventory for the holiday season, set up your new holiday categories, now it’s time to update your store’s keywords!

Using current, relevant keywords in your store are a very important part of getting your store pages indexed by the search engines.

In addition to using searchable keywords in your store category names (and of course your listing titles and listing descriptions!) you'll also want to make sure that your store description contains the keywords that reflect any new products and brand names you sell.

As an added bonus, you can increase your chances of potential buyers finding your store pages in major search engines such as MSN, Google, Yahoo by optimizing your Store’s Search Engine Keywords with relevant, searchable keywords.

You can do this in Manage My Store > Store Design > Search Engine Keywords found in the left hand navigation bar of My eBay.

To help determine what keywords to use, you can use the Stores Search Keywords Report.

The Search Keywords Report will give you a breakdown of each search keyword that has been used to find your Store and listings. You can use this report to identify which keywords are most effective in finding your Store and listings, and then include those keywords in your listing titles and descriptions.

Learn how Store Traffic Reports can help you find relevant keywords.

Set Up Your Custom Listing Frames

No holiday store would be complete without the use of a Custom Listing Frame!

Store sellers can include most of their Store category navigation in their listing description.

A Custom Listing Frame allows you to display your store header including your logo and links to 5 Store pages (we’ll talk more about using Custom Listing Frames in a moment).

In addition your listing will display a left hand navigation bar that displays your first 30 store categories (remember to create new Store categories as discussed in Post #7) and your Store Search Box.

A Custom Listing Frame is a simple, effective way for sellers to help buyers discover the full range of items available from you.

Cross-Sell for Big Sales!

The holidays are THE time of year when everyone wants to add a little “something” extra into that special gift package.

And it’s up to you to make sure you stock your eBay store with those additional add-on or cross-sell products for your customers to choose from.

For example, if you sell baby clothes, a cute snuggly stuffed animal might be the perfect item for cross-selling.

Selling electric razors for the man on their list? Carrying an assortment of great selling after-shave or even an anti-fog mirrors for the bathroom make that additional purchase almost a no-brainer for your customer.

Using the Cross-Promotions tool is a great way to promote add-on items or accessories that will increase your sales.

With the Cross-Promotions tool you can customize which items you want displayed to buyers and drive traffic to your other listings.

And the Cross-Promotions tool is free!

Up-Sell for Higher Average Sale Prices!

The holidays are also THE #1 time that a buyer is likely to upgrade to a better quality/more expensive product, almost without thinking about it.

If you’re not carrying deluxe/high end versions of your products, you’re leaving money on the table.

Showcase high-end versions of your products this time of year. Stores Promotion Boxes (which we will discuss next) are a great way to show your customers deluxe versions of a product they might not find otherwise.

By carrying high-end up-sell products, you’ll be in a position to increase your final sales ticket and the total value of each sale.

Set Up Custom Pages to Pre-Shop & Help Your Customer Click Bid or BIN!

At What Do I Sell one of the key strategies we teach our clients is that of pre-shopping for your customers.

And how to use eBay Custom pages to showcase your pre-shopping lists!

Pre-shopping means providing customers with a list of products that based on their interests and needs.

In fact, a 2006 survey ecommerce survey showed that the all the top selling niche websites had one thing in common. They each did “pre-shopping” for their customers.

Examples of pre-shopping lists would be:

- Our 10 Most Popular Golf Accessories
- Top 10 Cuddly Gifts for Kids Aged 4 and Under
- Customer’s Favorite Picks!
- 25 Unique Gifts under $25
- Favorite Gifts for the Dad Who Has Everything
- 17 Cool Kitchen Gadgets for the Weekend Chef

The possibilities are endless and can be tailored to fit your product line.

Each eBay store comes with custom pages that you can use to create your pre-shopping lists. Do some pre-shopping today and help your customers find the products in your eBay store that they can’t live without!

Then feature links to those pages in your Listing Frames as discussed in Post #10

And in the process, give YOUR eBay store the unique, competitive edge!
